It is home to the Missouri Military Academy and annually hosts the Miss Missouri Pageant. The city's population was 11,469 at the 2020 census. The micropolitan statistical area consists of Audrain County. It is a part of the Columbia, Missouri metropolitan area.

The school competes in MSHSAA 4A. Their sports include basketball and track and field. The school differs from typical high schools due to providing programs including child development and parenting classes and a day care facility. It was built in 1917, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style brick building on a raised basement. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 as Fred Douglass School. Recently, it was closed, restored, and modernized, reopening in the Fall of 2017. It is one of four High Schools in the Columbia Public School District.

It was originally built about 1892, and expanded rearward about 1904. It was extensively remodeled in 1928. It is a two-story brick building on a stone foundation. It features terra cotta ornamentation and Chicago school style windows. Today it holds Kaldi's Coffee House.
The Central Dairy Building, also known as Downtown Appliance and Gunther's Games, is a historic commercial building located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1927, and enlarged to its present size in 1940. It is a two-story brick building with terra cotta ornamentation elaborate classical and baroque design motifs. Also on the property is a contributing brick warehouse, constructed about 1940. Today the building houses an appliance store and restaurants on the first floor and lofts on the second.
The Coca-Cola Bottling Company Building, also known as the Kelly Press Building, is a historic commercial building located on Hitt Street in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built in 1935, and is a 1 1/2-story, Colonial Revival style brick building with a side gable roof with three dormers. It has a long one-story rear ell. Today it houses Uprise Bakery, Ragtag Cinema, Ninth Street Video, and Hitt Records.
Anheuser-Busch Brewery is a brewery complex in St. Louis, Missouri. It was opened in 1852 by German immigrant Adolphus Busch. It a National Historic Landmark District. The Lyon Schoolhouse Museum is on the grounds at the Anheuser-Busch Brewery. It is considered to be one of oldest school buildings in St Louis. It served as the head offices of the brewery after 1907. The museum contains rare mementos gathered from the founding of the company to current day, including pictures of the brewery and its expansion over the years. The 142 acres (57 ha) property includes 189 buildings. Some of the most striking are red brick Romanesque architecture with crenelated towers and elaborate ornamentation.

The McCain Furniture Store Building is a historic commercial building located in downtown Columbia, Missouri. It was built about 1930 for the S. H. Kress & Co., and remodeled in 1951. It is a two-story, brick building with a simple stepped parapet. Though it has hosted a variety of businesses since the closing of the original store, today it holds Plasma Biological Services.

It is a two-story, Classical Revival-style brick building. Associated with the school are the contributing one-story brick agricultural building (1937), a one-story brick home economics building (1940), a brick and concrete block gymnasium (1940), an athletic field, and a Department of Transportation highway historical marker commemorating the site of the first 4-H club in North Carolina (1955).

It was built in 1919, and is a two-story, Classical Revival style reinforced concrete building on a raised basement. It measures approximately 107 ft (33 m) deep and 63 ft (19 m) wide. The front facade features four fluted Doric order columns that support an entablature and frieze. It was built with support from the Missouri General Assembly to serve as a World War I memorial and a community centre.

St. Vincent's College Building, also known as the St. Vincent's Seminary, is a historic educational building located at Cape Girardeau, Missouri. It built between 1843 and 1871, and is a three-story, 52,000-square-foot, L-shaped brick building on a limestone foundation. The building and its additions reflect the influences of Colonial American Georgian architecture and the popular mid-19th century Italian Villa style. The building served as the College's main residential, classroom, and chapel building. The college closed in 1910, after which it housed a private high school.

It was built in 1924, and is a three-story, rectangular, Classical Revival style reinforced concrete building with brick walls. It has a concrete foundation and flat roof with shaped parapets with cast stone coping. It features decorative cast stone trim. The school closed in 2005.

It was built in 1874, and is a two-story, L-shaped, Italianate style brick building. A wing was added in 1906. It features a decorative metal cornice and three round arched windows. The building is known to have housed a brothel in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.
