The Republic of Abkhazia (Abkhazia) is a self-proclaimed state that declared independence soon after a catastrophic war as a residual effect of the dissolution of the Soviet Union in early 1990s, known as the War in Abkhazia (1992–1993), between Abkhazian and Georgian forces. As newly declared state, Abkhazia struggled to gain recognition from the international community, with one country recognizing Abkhazia as an independent state immediately after the war. Firstly, Transnistria and Abkhazia mutually recognised each other on 22 January 1993. This was seen as the first step to Abkhazia looking towards recognition. After two decades, on 20 September, 2005, the second country that mutually recognised Abkhazia was South Ossetia. Third, Nagorno-Karabakh also followed the two other countries in recognizing Abkhazia on 14 November, 2006.
