The James Norman Hall House is a historic residence located in Colfax, Iowa, United States. This was an early home of author James Norman Hall. His first book was written here, and it figured into his other works, notably Oh Millersburg! [2] He is best known as a co-author of the 1932 novel Mutiny on The Bounty . Most of Hall's life, however, was lived outside of Colfax and the United States in his later years. The two-story, frame house, follows an L-plan. There is a single story wrap around porch on the west, south and half of the southeast sides. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. [1]
James Norman Hall was an American writer best known for The Bounty Trilogy, three historical novels he wrote with Charles Nordhoff: Mutiny on the Bounty (1932), Men Against the Sea (1934) and Pitcairn's Island (1934). During World War I, Hall had the distinction of serving in the militaries of three Western allies: Great Britain as an infantryman, and then France and the United States as an aviator. His awards include the Croix de Guerre, the Médaille Militaire, the Légion d'Honneur and the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war, Hall spent much of his life on the island of Tahiti, where he and Nordhoff wrote a number of successful adventure books, many adapted for film. He was also the father of Conrad L. Hall, regarded as one of the ten most influential cinematographers in film history.

Porter Hall is a historic residence located in Centerville, Iowa, United States. The 2½-story frame house exhibits aspects of the Picturesque Tudor Revival style, especially in the half-timbering and stucco. The house gained its present appearance during the ownership of Dr. Charles James in the 1910s and 1920s. There is some question as to whether this is an older 1880s house that has been extensively remodeled. It receives its name from Claude R. Porter who owned this property from 1906 to 1909. Porter was a Democrat, who served two terms in the Iowa House of Representatives, two terms in the Iowa Senate, United States Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa, and a member of the Interstate Commerce Commission. He was also a perennial candidate for Governor of Iowa and the U.S. Senate from Iowa, but lost every election to his Republican opponent. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
The Henn Mansion, also known as Ewing Hall, is a historic building located in Fairfield, Iowa, United States. A native of New York, Bernhart Henn served two terms in the United States House of Representatives representing Iowa's 1st congressional district as a Democratic. Previously he had served as the Registrar of the U.S. Land Office. He had this two-story, brick, Greek Revival house built in 1858. However, the financial panic of 1857 almost wiped out his fortune. When he died in 1865, the house and the 40 acres (16 ha) of land that surrounded it had to be sold. The house is representative of the financial success one had in the public sector in the pioneer economy. It was also the birthplace of Parsons College in 1875. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
The J.E. Squiers House, also known as the Squiers Manor Bed and Breakfast, is a historic building located in Maquoketa, Iowa, United States. The architectural and historic significance of this house is attributed to its being "a well-preserved example of late nineteenth century domestic architecture in Maquoketa's most prominent residential neighborhood and for its association with the life and career of James Emery Squiers, a prominent local businessman." Built in 1882, the 21⁄2-story brick house features elements consistent with the Queen Anne and Stick styles. It follows a central hall floor plan with two rectangular projecting bays, a three-sided bay window, a kitchen addition on the back, and a hipped roof with intersecting gable sections.

Garland settled in Dubuque in 1889 and built a general insurance agency that grew to cover 25 counties in Iowa representing the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company. He was also a community booster and philanthropist. The exterior of his large Georgian Revival home is covered with concrete block veneer, which is an unusual combination. The main facade is dominated by a two-story pedimented portico, the east elevation by a centered semicircular vault dormer, and the rear elevation by a two-story veranda. The house is capped with a hip roof with dormers. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, and it was included as a contributing property in the Langworthy Historic District in 2004.

The Kirkwood House is a historic building located in Iowa City, Iowa, United States. It was built for the local attorney and businessman Samuel J. Kirkwood who also served as Governor of Iowa, represented Iowa in the United States Senate, and was Secretary of the Interior in the cabinet of President James A. Garfield. The house was built after his second term as governor and remained his home until his death in 1893. His widow remained here until her death in 1923. This was his home during most of his political career and it reflects the "rural and unpretentious style of living" that the Kirkwoods preferred. The house was originally located on a much larger estate, but the rest of it has subsequently been divided into lots and sold. The two-story L-shaped wood-frame structure, which sits further back from the street than other houses on the block, has paired brackets and a roof line cornice as its only ornamentation. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Paul Lattner, who owned Cedar Rapids Auto & Supply Company, had this building constructed for his business in 1910. The first floor was an automobile showroom, the second floor was used for auto storage, and the third floor housed a neighborhood dance hall. Because this is an early example of an automobile related business, the dance hall/auditorium may have been included to ensure the building's economic viability given the nature of the automobile business at that time. Various auto-related businesses continued to occupy the building until 1935.
The Wesley West House is a historic building located in Mount Vernon, Iowa, United States. West and his wife Polly settled here in 1859. He had local builders Marsden Keyes and Charles H. The house remained in the family until 1982. It features a square plan with a single story off-centered kitchen wing, a symmetrical facade, and a hipped roof with bracketed eaves. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
The Valley Junction-West Des Moines City Hall and Engine House is a historic building located in West Des Moines, Iowa, United States. Valley Junction was incorporated in 1893, and it was named for the junction of three lines of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad where it was located. This two-story brick building was constructed to house the community's city hall and fire station, even though the fire department would not be established until 1905. The fire station was located on the first floor, and the city hall was located on the second floor. It was located a block north of the train depot. An interurban railway connected the town to Des Moines, and its proximity to the Iowa coal fields contributed to its growth. By 1911 the town grew to be the second largest community in Polk County, and its name was changed to West Des Moines by 1940. The building was used for city hall until 1952. It was individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It was included as a contributing property in the Valley Junction Commercial Historic District in 2017.
