Kunnicode or Kunnikode is a small village on NH 744 (Kollam-Thirumangalam highway) in the Kollam District.

National Highway 744 or NH 744 is a National Highway in Southern India that links Kollam (Quilon) in Kerala with Madurai in Tamil Nadu. Starting from NH 66 at Chinnakkada in Kollam, it joins Tirumangalam in Madurai at National Highway 44 (India).

Kollampronunciation (help·info), also known by its former name Quilonpronunciation (help·info) and Coulão and Desinganadu, is an old seaport and city on the Laccadive Sea coast of the Indian state of Kerala. The city is on the banks Ashtamudi Lake. Kollam has a strong commercial reputation since the days of the Phoenicians and Romans. Fed by the Chinese trade, it was mentioned by Ibn Battuta in the 14th century as one of the five Indian ports he had seen during the course of his twenty-four year travels. Desinganadu's rajas exchanged embassies with Chinese rulers while there was a flourishing Chinese settlement at Kollam. In the 9th Century, on his way to Canton, China, Persian merchant Sulaiman al-Tajir found Kollam to be the only port in India visited by huge Chinese junks. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, who was in Chinese service under Kublai Khan in 1275, visited Kollam and other towns on the west coast, in his capacity as a Chinese mandarin.

Location

It is located 8 km (5.0 mi) from Kottarakkara, 10 km (6.2 mi) from Pathanapuram and 10 km (6.2 mi) from Punalur.

Kottarakkara, also transliterated as Kottarakara, is a vast developing town and municipality in Punalur Revenue Division and Kollam District, in Kerala state, India. The town is close to Kollam Port, which has a rich history linked to the early medieval period as well as a reputation as an important commercial, industrial and trading center. Kottarakkara lies 27 kilometres (17 mi) to the east of Kollam city centre.

Kodikunnil Suresh is an Indian politician and working president of Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). He was a Minister of State in the Ministry of Labour. He is a member of the sixteenth Lok Sabha representing Mavelikara Constituency in Kerala. This is the seventh time he is being elected to the Lok Sabha. He is also the Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Transportation

There is a recent proposal to construct Sabari ByPass, which serves as an alternative to travel from Thiruvananthapuram to Sabarimala (The normal route is through Kottarakkara, Adoor and Pathanamthitta). This proposed route passes through Kunnicode.^{[ citation needed ]}

The temple is dedicated to the Hindu celibate deity Ayyappan also known as Dharma Sastha, who according to belief is the son of Shiva and Mohini, the feminine incarnation of Vishnu. The traditions of Sabarimala are a confluence of Shaivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism, and other Śramaṇa traditions.
