The La Crosse Commercial Historic District is located in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin. It includes over ninety contributing structures, mostly 2-3 story commercial brick buildings constructed from the 1860s to the 1940s. The district is roughly bounded by Jay Street, Second Street South, State Street, and Fifth Avenue South. [2]

Some of the notable contributing properties include [2] the 1866 Voegle grocery and saloon, [3] the 1870 Italianate Solberg grocery store, [4] the 1894 Romanesque/Queen Anne Rehfuss dry goods building, [5] the 1903 Chicago school Doerflinger department store, [6] the 1920 Neoclassical Rivoli building and theatre, [7] and the 1940 Moderne Hoeschler Exchange building. [8]

The district currently contains numerous bars and restaurants. Downtown La Crosse once had the Guinness Book record with the most bars/nightclubs located on one street, which was Third Street. [9] [ better source needed ] The area also includes other shops, offices, and residential spaces.

The NRHP listed Freight House is located two blocks north of the historic district. [10]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mesker Brothers</span>

The Mesker Brothers Iron Works and George L. Mesker & Co. were competing manufacturers and designers of ornamental sheet-metal facades and cast iron storefront components from the 1880s through the mid-twentieth century. The Mesker Brothers Iron Works was based in St. Louis, Missouri, and was operated by brothers Bernard and Frank Mesker. The George L. Mesker Company was operated by a third brother, George L. Mesker, and was based in Evansville, Indiana. The Mesker brothers were the sons of John Mesker who operated a stove business in Evansville and later galvanized iron for buildings. The three brothers learned their iron-working skills from their father.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Parkinson & Dockendorff</span>

Parkinson & Dockendorff was an architectural firm based in La Crosse, Wisconsin, that was known for its works designed from 1905 through the 1930s. The firm's two named partners were Albert Edward Parkinson and Bernard Joseph Dockendorff. The firm is credited with designing over 800 public buildings, including "many of the most significant surviving Early Modern (1900–1940) commercial and public buildings" in La Crosse. A number of Parkinson & Dockendorff's works are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Van Ryn & DeGelleke</span>

Van Ryn & DeGelleke was an architectural firm in Wisconsin. It was a partnership of Henry J. Van Ryn and Gerrit Jacob DeGelleke, both of whom grew up in Milwaukee.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Freight House (La Crosse, Wisconsin)</span> United States historic place

The Freight House is a restaurant in downtown La Crosse, Wisconsin located close to the river front and Riverside Park. The building was a freight house built by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway in 1880, with an addition in 1904. It was converted in 1978 into a restaurant. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gund Brewing Company Bottling Works</span> United States historic place

Gund Brewery Lofts or the old Gund Brewing Company Bottling Works was a progressive beer-bottling factory built in 1903, designed by Louis Lehle with modern sanitization and pasteurization machines that gave Gund's beer a reliable shelf life, and electrical power that allowed an efficient plant layout. The factory has now been remodeled as apartments. It is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The East Wilson Street Historic District includes remnants of businesses that grew around two railroad depots a half mile east of the capitol in Madison, Wisconsin, starting in the 1860s. A cluster of the hotel and saloon buildings from this district are still fairly intact, in contrast to Madison's other railroad station on West Washington. In 1986 the district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the State Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The East Dayton Street Historic District is a historic district located in Madison, Wisconsin, United States, that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The district includes three neighboring buildings at 647 E. Dayton Street, 649-53 E. Dayton Street, and 114 N. Blount Street. The buildings are the last remnant of Madison's first Black neighborhood, which developed around East Dayton Street in the early twentieth century.
