TRAX is a three-line urban light rail mass transit system operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), serving much of the Salt Lake Valley in Utah, United States. (The official name of TRAX is Transit Express, however this name is almost never used.) Communities served by the service include Draper, Midvale, Murray, Salt Lake City, Sandy, South Jordan, South Salt Lake, West Jordan, and West Valley City.
The network consists of three lines: the Blue Line (previously referred to as the Sandy Line), which opened in 1999; the Red Line (previously referred to as the University Line), which opened in 2001; [1] [2] and the Green Line, which opened in 2011. As of July 2023, the network serves 36,900 passengers a day, making TRAX the 10th-largest light rail system in the United States in ridership.[ needs update ] [3] [4] There are 50 stations on the 3 lines of the UTA TRAX system, with an overall length of the network being 44.8 miles (72.1 km). [4]
The stations along the UTA TRAX network are open-air structures featuring passenger canopies for protection from adverse weather. Many of the canopies are designed to resemble the canopy at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building (which is located Downtown and listed on the National Register of Historic Places). [5] Works of public art included at several stations were developed as part of the UTA's Art in Transit program. [6] At first the program was met with skepticism; initially, only the stations constructed in Salt Lake City incorporated public art into their designs. This was the case as the city was initially the only one to take part in the Art in Transit program. [7] The program has since grown in popularity, and many of the stations constructed as part of the FrontLines 2015 expansion will include public art in their final design. [6]
Nearly all stations, except those in Downtown Salt Lake City, have a Park and Ride lot with free parking. TRAX Park and Ride lots may have as few as six parking spaces or as many as nearly 1200. Many of the Downtown Salt Lake City stations are located within the Free Fare Zone which allows riders that both enter and exit TRAX and/or UTA buses service within the Zone to ride with no charge. Stations within the Zone include Arena, City Center, Courthouse, Gallivan Plaza, Library, Old GreekTown, Planetarium, Salt Lake Central, and Temple Square.
All of UTA's TRAX and FrontRunner trains and stations, streetcars and streetcar stops, and all fixed route buses are compliant with Americans with Disabilities Act and are therefore accessible to those with disabilities. [8] Signage at the stations, on the passenger platforms, and on the trains clearly indicate accessibility options. Ramps on the passenger platforms on the Blue Line and assistance from the train operator may be necessary for wheelchair boarding (weekdays only). These ramps are not used on weekends nor on the Red or Green Lines. In accordance with the Utah Clean Air Act and UTA ordinance, "smoking is prohibited on UTA vehicles as well as UTA bus stops, TRAX stations, and FrontRunner stations". [9]
UTA's TRAX began service on December 4, 1999, with the opening of what was then called the Sandy/Salt Lake Line (now called the Blue Line) which ran from Sandy Civic Center to Delta Center (now called Arena). [1] The line saw construction of a pair of infill stations with the opening of 900 South in 2005 and Sandy Expo in 2006 and the 650 South in 2022 as a result of demand for additional service. [10] [11] The University Line (TRAX) commenced service on 15 December 2001 between Stadium and Delta Center. [2] The line expanded in April 2008, when three new stations opened between Planetarium and Salt Lake Central. [12] The Sandy/University Line began service on December 17, 2001, between Stadium and Sandy Civic Center. [13] Originally operating on a limited schedule, by August 2009, trains were added to the line serving all stations between Sandy Civic Center and University Medical Center. [14] Expansion as part of the FrontLines 2015 project saw the completion of an additional 25.2 miles (40.6 km) of track by August 2013. [4] The completion of the Airport and Draper extensions added service to the Salt Lake City International Airport and Draper. [4]
Salt Lake Central (which is part of the Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub) connects with FrontRunner commuter rail (with service from Weber County through Davis County and Salt Lake County to Utah County), as well as Amtrak and Greyhound Lines. In addition Murray Central and North Temple Bridge/Guadalupe also connect with FrontRunner. In December 2013 the first phase of the S Line (formerly known as Sugar House Streetcar) project opened for service with a connection at Central Pointe in South Salt Lake.

The Utah Transit Authority is undertaking a major expansion called FrontLines 2015. [23] As part of this project UTA will add 25.2 miles (40.6 km) of track to the existing 19.6 mi (31.5 km) light-rail network as defined in the Utah Transit Authority's 2030 Long-range Transportation Plan. All of the expansions were completed and opened for service by August 2013 (except the 14600 South and Highland Drive Stations). [23] Six of the stations are part of the Airport extension of the Green Line. Three completed stations and two more proposed stations are or will be part of the Draper extension of the Blue Line.

The system's official name, Transit Express, is rarely, if ever, used. The system is operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). All TRAX trains are electric, receiving power from overhead wires.
The Utah Transit Authority (UTA) is a special service district responsible for providing public transportation throughout the Wasatch Front of Utah, in the United States, which includes the metropolitan areas of Ogden, Park City, Provo, Salt Lake City and Tooele. It operates fixed route buses, flex route buses, express buses, ski buses, three light rail lines in Salt Lake County (TRAX), a streetcar line in Salt Lake City, and a commuter rail train (FrontRunner) from Ogden through Salt Lake City to Provo. UTA is headquartered in Salt Lake City with operations and garages in locations throughout the Wasatch Front, including Ogden, Midvale and Orem. Light rail vehicles are stored and maintained at yards at locations in South Salt Lake and Midvale. UTA's commuter rail equipment is stored and serviced at a facility in Salt Lake City. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 35,058,000, or about 133,400 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024.
Transportation in Salt Lake City consists of a wide network of roads, an extensive bus system, a light rail system, and a commuter rail line. Although Salt Lake City, Utah, is a traditionally car-oriented city, the rapidly growing public transit system has a high number of riders for a city of its size, and public transit is widely supported by its residents and businesses.
The Blue Line is a light rail line on the TRAX system in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah, in the United States, operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It is the first line of the TRAX system completed. The line opened on December 4, 1999, one year ahead of schedule after two years of construction. In addition to Salt Lake City, it also serves the communities of South Salt Lake, Murray, Midvale, Sandy and Draper. The line was known as the North/South Line or the Sandy/Salt Lake Line until color names were adopted for each TRAX line in August 2011. An extension of the line to Draper began service on August 18, 2013.
FrontRunner is a commuter rail train operated by the Utah Transit Authority that operates along the Wasatch Front in north-central Utah with service from the Ogden Central Station in central Weber County through Davis County, Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake County to Provo Central station in central Utah County. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 3,736,600, or about 14,200 per weekday as of the second quarter of 2024.
The Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub, also called Salt Lake Central station by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), is a multi-modal transportation hub in Salt Lake City, Utah, United States served by the Blue Line of UTA's TRAX light rail system that operates in Salt Lake County and by the FrontRunner, UTA's commuter rail train that operates along the Wasatch Front with service from Ogden in central Weber County through Davis County, Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake County to Provo in central Utah County. Service at the intermodal hub is also provided by Amtrak, and Greyhound Lines, as well as UTA local bus service.
The Red Line is a light rail line on the TRAX system in the Salt Lake Valley of Utah operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It originally began operation in December 2001 as the peak-hour-only Sandy/University Line, running from the University of Utah south to Sandy Civic Center on the Blue Line. It was later rerouted to South Jordan and renamed the Red Line in August 2011, running as an all-day route. The current line runs from the University of Utah Medical Center in Salt Lake City through the south end of Downtown Salt Lake City, South Salt Lake, Murray, Midvale, West Jordan, and South Jordan to the University of Utah's South Jordan Medical Center in Daybreak.

900 East is a light rail station in the Central City neighborhood of Salt Lake City, Utah, United States serviced by the Red Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX light rail system. The Red Line provides service from the University of Utah to the Daybreak community in South Jordan.
900 South is a light rail station in Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States, served by all three lines of Utah Transit Authority's TRAX light rail system. The Blue Line provides service from Downtown Salt Lake City to Draper. The Red Line provides service from the University of Utah to the Daybreak community of South Jordan. The Green Line provides service from the Salt Lake City International Airport to West Valley City. The station opened on September 19, 2005, and is operated by the Utah Transit Authority. 900 South is notable for being the first infill station constructed along an existing line of the TRAX system.

Central Pointe station is a light rail station in South Salt Lake, Utah, in the United States, served by all three lines of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX light rail system. In December 2013, the station also became the western terminus for the S Line.
Murray Central station is a light rail and commuter rail station in Murray, Utah, United States served by the Blue Line and Red Line of Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX light rail system that operates in Salt Lake County and by the FrontRunner, UTA's commuter rail train that operates along the Wasatch Front with service from Ogden in central Weber County through Davis County, Salt Lake City, and Salt Lake County to Provo in central Utah County. The FrontRunner portion of the station is part of the FrontRunner South extension. The Blue Line provides service from Downtown Salt Lake City south to Draper. The Red Line provides service from the University of Utah to the Daybreak Community of South Jordan. The station is situated immediately west of the Intermountain Medical Center complex.
Sandy Civic Center station is a light rail station in Sandy, Utah, United States serviced by the Blue Line of Utah Transit Authority's TRAX light rail system. The Blue Line provides service from Downtown Salt Lake City to Draper. Prior to the opening of the Draper extension in 2013, this station was the southernmost on the Blue Line. The station opened on December 4, 1999, as part of the first operating segment of the TRAX system on the Sandy/University Line.
The Green Line is a light rail line on the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system in Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States, operated by the Utah Transit Authority (UTA). It opened on August 7, 2011, and runs between Airport Station at the Salt Lake City International Airport and West Valley Central Station in West Valley City serving a total of eighteen stations: thirteen in Salt Lake City, one in South Salt Lake, and four in West Valley City.

Draper Town Center station is a light rail station located in Draper, Utah, United States, served by the TRAX Blue Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system. The Blue Line provides service north from this station to Downtown Salt Lake City.
Airport station is a light rail station located at the Salt Lake City International Airport in Salt Lake City, Utah, serviced by the Green Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system. The Green Line has service to West Valley City via Downtown Salt Lake City, and connects with the rest of the TRAX system, as well as UTA's FrontRunner commuter rail and S Line streetcar.
1940 West North Temple station is a light rail station in Salt Lake City, Utah serviced by the Green Line of the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) TRAX system. The Green Line provides service from the Salt Lake City International Airport to West Valley City, and connects with the rest of the TRAX system, as well as UTA's FrontRunner commuter rail and S Line streetcar.
The Mount Timpanogos Transit Center was a staffed, open air bus transfer station in southeast Orem, Utah, United States. It functioned as both the Utah Transit Authority's (UTA) customer service center for Utah County, as well as a bus transfer center for UTA's buses in east central Utah Valley. Prior to the opening of the FrontRunner commuter rail extension south to Provo in 2012), it was the busiest bus stop within the entire UTA bus system.
