Kamal Haasan is an Indian actor, who works mainly in the Tamil film industry.

Overview

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors in history of Indian cinema, [1] [2] he received the President's Gold Medal at the age of six for acting in his debut film Kalathur Kannamma . [2] [3] As of 2013, Haasan has won four National Film Awards, [4] two Filmfare Awards and a record 18 Filmfare Awards South . After his last Filmfare award for Hey Ram in 2000, he wrote to the organisation requesting not to award him further. [5] Haasan received his first National Film Award for Best Actor in 1983 for Moondram Pirai in which he played the role of a school teacher who looks after a girl suffering from amnesia. In 1988 he secured his second National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Mani Ratnam's Nayakan , which was ranked by Time magazine as one of the "Top-100 best films" of all time. [6] In 1997, Haasan received his third National Film Award for Best Actor in Indian, [2] in which he portrayed the role of a freedom fighter who tries to drive out corruption from the country.

Seven of the films that Haasan has been featured were submitted by India to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film, the most films ever submitted for any actor in India. [2] [7] Apart from his acting career he has also worked as a director, screenwriter, playback singer and lyricist. [8] He owns a film production company, Raaj Kamal Films International, named after his mother, which produces several of his films. [9] In 2009, he became one of the few actors in India to have completed 50 years in Indian cinema. [2] [10] 2013 CNN-IBN survey on "100 years of Indian cinema kamal in 2nd position of greatest indian actors of all time.

Haasan has been honoured at a few International film festivals. Films like Hey Ram and Virumaandi , both directed by him were screened at several film festivals. Hey Ram was showcased under the category "Director in Focus" at the Rotterdam Film Festival and Virumaandi was awarded the Best Film at the Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival.

Civilian honours

Kamal Haasan has been a recipient of Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, the fourth and third highest civilian honours awarded by the Government of India respectively. [11]

Industry, Media and Government Recognition

CNN IBN

Government Awards

The Government of Tamil Nadu honoured Haasan with the Kalaimamani in 1980 for his contribution to the Tamil film industry. In 2010 Haasan was honoured by the Government of Kerala upon his completion of 50 years in Indian cinema. In 2000 March 7, Kamal Haasan was honoured by the Government of West Bengal upon his film Hey Ram screened at Netaji Indoor Stadium, West Bengal.

Considered as one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, Haasan is also known for introducing many new film technologies and film making techniques to the Indian film industry. He has won numerous accolades, including four National Film Awards, nine Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, four Nandi Awards, one Rashtrapati Award, two Filmfare Awards and eighteen Filmfare Awards South. Chiranjeevi holds the record for the most "Industry Hits" in Telugu cinema, with eight films emerging as the top-grossers of their time—a feat unmatched by any actor in the industry's 100-year history. He is also celebrated as one of the finest dancers in Indian cinema. He has received numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan in 2006 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2024 from the Government of India, as well as the IFFI Indian Film Personality of the Year Award in 2022. His other accolades include the Raghupathi Venkaiah Award, three Nandi Awards, and nine Filmfare Awards South, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2013, CNN-IBN recognized him as one of "the men who changed the face of the Indian Cinema". In 2024, he was honoured with a Guinness World Record as the most prolific actor-dancer in the Indian film industry.

Trisha Krishnan is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Tamil and Telugu films. She gained prominence after winning the 1999 Miss Chennai pageant, which marked her entry into Cinema. Often referred to as the "Queen of South India", Trisha has received numerous accolades, including five Filmfare Award South, one Tamil Nadu State Film Award, one Nandi Award and eight SIIMA Awards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">S. Shankar</span> Indian film director, film producer and screenwriter (born 1963)

Shankar Shanmugam, credited as S. Shankar or his mononymShankar, is an Indian film director, film producer, and screenwriter who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. In addition, he also worked in Hindi films and Telugu films. His films typically deal with contemporary social issues, vigilante themes, and the usage of state-of-the-art technology and VFX. He has won one National Film Award, four Filmfare Award South, and six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards in his career. Six of his films have won the National Film Award for Best Special Effects.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sivakumar</span> Indian actor (born 1941)

Palaniswamy, better known by his stage name Sivakumar, is an Indian visual artist and actor who has appeared in Tamil cinema and television. He made his acting debut in Kaakum Karangal (1965) and has worked over 200 movies, predominantly only in Tamil cinema. He has won three Filmfare Awards South and two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards.

<i>Indian</i> (1996 film) 1996 film directed by S. Shankar

Indian is a 1996 Indian Tamil-language vigilante action film directed by S. Shankar, who wrote the script with dialogues by Sujatha, and produced by A. M. Rathnam. The film stars Kamal Haasan in a dual role, alongside Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Sukanya, Manorama, Goundamani, Senthil, Nedumudi Venu, Kasthuri, Nizhalgal Ravi and Ajay Rathnam. It is the first instalment in the Indian film series. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, while cinematography and editing were handled by Jeeva and B. Lenin-V. T. Vijayan. In the film, Senapathy, a retired freedom fighter rebels against corruption in India, which puts him in conflict with his son Chandru, who lives by corruption.

Hey Ram is a 2000 Indian epic historical drama film written, directed, and produced by Kamal Haasan, that stars him and Shah Rukh Khan in lead roles. It was simultaneously made in the Tamil and Hindi languages.

Ranganathan Madhavan is an Indian actor, screenwriter, film producer and film director who predominantly works in Tamil and Hindi cinema. <i>Anbe Sivam</i> 2003 Indian Tamil-language comedy-drama film by Sundar C.

Anbe Sivam is a 2003 Indian Tamil-language slice-of-life drama film directed by Sundar C and produced by K. Muralitharan, V. Swaminathan and G. Venugopal under the banner of Lakshmi Movie Makers. The film was written by Kamal Haasan, and Madhan provided the dialogues. Anbe Sivam stars Haasan, Madhavan and Kiran Rathod, with Nassar, Santhana Bharathi, Seema and Uma Riyaz Khan playing supporting characters. The film tells the story of Nallasivam and Anbarasu, two men of contrasting personalities who undertake an unexpected journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai.

Asha Kelunni, better known by her stage name Revathi, is an Indian actress and director, known for her works predominantly in Tamil and Malayalam cinema - in addition to Telugu, Hindi and Kannada films. She was one of the most successful leading actresses of South Indian cinema and has won several accolades, including three National Film Awards, and seven Filmfare Awards South. She has also won the Kerala State Film Award for her performance in Bhoothakaalam (2022).

He has won one National Award, three Filmfare Awards and three SIIMA Awards in his film career.

Kamal Haasan is an Indian actor, film director, film producer, screenwriter and dance choreographer who works primarily in Tamil cinema. At the age of 5, he debuted as a child actor in the 1960 Tamil film Kalathur Kannamma, directed by A. Bhimsingh, which won him the President's Gold Medal. Since then, he has acted in over 230 films in Tamil and other languages including Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, and Bengali. After a few projects as a child artist, he took a break to continue his education. He later concentrated on dance choreography and worked as an assistant choreographer. During this time, he made uncredited appearances in a few films which he worked on.

He has garnered numerous accolades throughout his career, including two National Film Awards, five Nandi Awards, three Karnataka State Film Awards, and three Filmfare Awards South. In 2011, he was honoured with the Life Achievement Award by the Film Federation of India.

<i>Vishwaroopam</i> 2013 film directed by Kamal Haasan

Vishwaroopam is a 2013 Indian action spy film co-written, directed and produced by Kamal Haasan, who also enacts the lead role. The film also stars Rahul Bose, Shekhar Kapur, Pooja Kumar, Andrea Jeremiah, Nassar and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles. The film's script was written by Kamal Hassan, Chakri Toleti and Atul Tiwari. In the film, Nirupama, an ambitious woman studying in the US, marries a coward classical dancer, Viswanathan. On being suspicious of his behaviour, she hires a detective, who reveals his true identity and past.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">11th Chennai International Film Festival</span> Film festival edition

The 11th Chennai International Film Festival took place in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India from 12 to 19 December 2013. The event was organised by the Indo Cine Appreciation Foundation (ICAF) with support from the Government of Tamil Nadu. The festival was curated by actress-director Suhasini Maniratnam and inaugurated by Kamal Haasan and Aamir Khan. The Japanese drama Like Father, Like Son marked the beginning of the fest.
