List of saros series for lunar eclipses

Last updated

Lunar eclipses are grouped by their saros number, each series lasts between 1200 and 1600 years and contains from 69 to 89 lunar eclipses. Lunar eclipses in even series exist at the ascending node of the Moon's orbit, and odd series occur at the descending nodes.

Series have been indexed as −20 to 183 (active between 2000 BCE and 3000 CE), with events summarized: [1] [2] [3]

Each series begins with penumbral eclipses, transitions into partial eclipses and then total eclipses, and then reverses back to partial and penumbral. The counts for each type are listed below in sequence. The notes show two exceptions:

Solar eclipse of July 11, 1991 20th-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurred on July 11, 1991. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun's, blocking all direct sunlight, turning day into darkness. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide. Totality began over the Pacific Ocean and Hawaii moving across Mexico, down through Central America and across South America ending over Brazil. It lasted for 6 minutes and 53.08 seconds at the point of maximum eclipse. There will not be a longer total eclipse until June 13, 2132. This was the largest total solar eclipse of Solar Saros series 136, because eclipse magnitude was 1.07997.

April 2013 lunar eclipse Partial lunar eclipse 25 April 2013

A partial lunar eclipse took place on 25 April 2013, the first of three lunar eclipses in 2013. Only a tiny sliver (1.48%) of the Moon was covered by the Earth's umbral shadow at maximum eclipse, but the entire northern half of the Moon was darkened from being inside the penumbral shadow. This was one of the shortest partial eclipses of the Moon for the 21st century, lasting 27 minutes. This was the last of 58 umbral lunar eclipses of Lunar Saros 112.

A partial lunar eclipse took place on April 15, 1995, the first of two lunar eclipses in 1995, the second being with a penumbral lunar eclipse on Sunday, October 8.

A partial lunar eclipse took place on June 25, 1983. The Earth's shadow on the moon was clearly visible in this eclipse, with 33% of the Moon in shadow; the partial eclipse lasted for 2 hours and 15 minutes.

December 1983 lunar eclipse Penumbral lunar eclipse December 20, 1983

A penumbral lunar eclipse took place on December 20, 1983. At the maximum eclipse, 89% of the Moon's disk was partially shaded by the Earth, which caused a slight shadow gradient across its disc; this subtle effect may have been visible to careful observers. No part of the Moon was in complete shadow. The eclipse lasted 4 hours and 2 minutes overall.

A total lunar eclipse took place on April 24, 1967, the first of two total lunar eclipses in 1967, the second being on October 18, 1967.

Solar eclipse of March 9, 2016 21st-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse took place at the Moon's descending node of the orbit on March 8–9, 2016. If viewed from east of the International Date Line, the eclipse took place on March 8th (Tuesday) and elsewhere on March 9th (Wednesday). A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is larger than the Sun's and the apparent path of the Sun and Moon intersect, blocking all direct sunlight and turning daylight into darkness; the sun appears to be black with a halo around it. Totality occurs in a narrow path across Earth's surface, with the partial solar eclipse visible over a surrounding region thousands of kilometres wide. The eclipse of March 8–9, 2016 had a magnitude of 1.0450 visible across an area of Pacific Ocean, which started in the Indian Ocean, and ended in the northern Pacific Ocean.

A total lunar eclipse took place on September 15, 1913. The moon passed through the center of the Earth's shadow.

September 2043 lunar eclipse

A total lunar eclipse will take place on September 19, 2043.

Solar eclipse of September 1, 2016 21st-century annular solar eclipse

An annular solar eclipse occurred on September 1, 2016. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun, thereby totally or partly obscuring the image of the Sun for a viewer on Earth. An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon's apparent diameter is smaller than the Sun's, blocking most of the Sun's light and causing the Sun to look like an annulus (ring). An annular eclipse appears as a partial eclipse over a region of the Earth thousands of kilometres wide. In this case, annularity was observed in Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and Reunion.

Solar eclipse of February 26, 1998 20th-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurred on February 26, 1998. Totality was visible in the Galápagos Islands, Panama, Colombia, the Paraguaná Peninsula in northwestern Venezuela, all of Aruba, most of Curaçao and the northwestern tip of Bonaire, all of Montserrat, Guadeloupe and Antigua and Barbuda.

Solar eclipse of February 16, 1980 20th-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurred at the Moon's descending node of the orbit on February 16, 1980. The path of totality crossed central Africa, southern India, and into China at sunset. The southern part of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, also lies in the path of totality. Occurring only about 24 hours before perigee, the Moon's apparent diameter was larger. This was a Supermoon Total Solar Eclipse because the Moon was just a day before perigee.

Solar eclipse of May 30, 1984 20th-century annular solar eclipse

An annular solar eclipse occurred on May 30, 1984. Annularity was visible in Mexico, the United States, Azores Islands, Morocco and Algeria. It was the first annular solar eclipse visible in the US in 33 years. The moon's apparent diameter was near the average diameter because occurs 6.7 days after apogee and 7.8 days before perigee.

Solar eclipse of October 23, 1976 20th-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurred on October 23, 1976. This total solar eclipse began at sunrise in Tanzania near the border with Burundi, with the path of totality passing just north of the large Tanzanian city of Dar es Salaam. It then crossed the Indian Ocean, passing St. Pierre Island, Providence Atoll and Farquhar Atoll of Seychelles before making landfall in southeastern Australia. The largest city that saw totality was Melbourne. After leaving the Australian mainland, the path of totality left the Earth's surface just north of the north island of New Zealand.

Solar eclipse of March 29, 1987 20th-century total solar eclipse

A total solar eclipse occurred at the Moon's ascending node of the orbit on March 29, 1987. It was a hybrid eclipse, with only a small portion of the central path as total, lasting a maximum of only 7.57 seconds.
