The saros is a period of exactly 223 synodic months, approximately 6585.321 days, or 18 years plus 10, 11, or 12 days, and 8 hours, that can be used to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon. One saros period after an eclipse, the Sun, Earth, and Moon return to approximately the same relative geometry, a near straight line, and a nearly identical eclipse will occur, in what is referred to as an eclipse cycle. A sar is one half of a saros.

A total lunar eclipse occurred at the Moon’s descending node of orbit on Tuesday, May 4, 2004, with an umbral magnitude of 1.3035. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the Moon to be darkened. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon's near side entirely passes into the Earth's umbral shadow. Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth. A total lunar eclipse can last up to nearly two hours, while a total solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes at any given place, because the Moon's shadow is smaller. Occurring about 1.2 days before perigee, the Moon's apparent diameter was larger.

A total lunar eclipse took place on Friday, September 27, 1996, the second of two lunar eclipses in 1996, the first being on Thursday, April 4. This is the 41st member of Lunar Saros 127. The previous event is the September 1978 lunar eclipse. The next event is the October 2014 lunar eclipse.

A penumbral lunar eclipse occurred at the Moon’s descending node of orbit on Thursday, August 18, 2016, with an umbral magnitude of −0.9925. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the Moon to be darkened. A penumbral lunar eclipse occurs when part or all of the Moon's near side passes into the Earth's penumbra. Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth. A total lunar eclipse will occur at the Moon’s descending node of orbit on Saturday, May 26, 2040, with an umbral magnitude of 1.5365. Occurring about 1.4 days before perigee, the Moon's apparent diameter will be larger.

A total lunar eclipse took place on Tuesday, 6 July 1982, the second of three total lunar eclipses in 1982, and the only one that was in the descending node. A dramatic total eclipse lasting 1 hour and 46 minutes plunged the full Moon into deep darkness, as it passed right through the centre of the Earth's umbral shadow. While the visual effect of a total eclipse is variable, the Moon may have been stained a deep orange or red colour at maximum eclipse. This was a great spectacle for everyone who saw it. The partial eclipse lasted for 3 hours and 56 minutes in total.

A total lunar eclipse occurred at the Moon’s descending node of orbit on Sunday, April 2, 1950, with an umbral magnitude of 1.0329. Occurring only about 23 hours before perigee, the Moon's apparent diameter was larger.

A partial lunar eclipse occurred at the Moon’s ascending node of orbit on Thursday, March 12, 1914, with an umbral magnitude of 0.9111. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves into the Earth's shadow, causing the Moon to be darkened. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when one part of the Moon is in the Earth's umbra, while the other part is in the Earth's penumbra. Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of Earth. Occurring only about 18 hours before perigee, the Moon's apparent diameter was larger.

A penumbral lunar eclipse will occur at the Moon’s descending node of orbit on Wednesday, February 21, 1951, with a penumbral magnitude of 0.007. Occurring about 6.5 days after apogee, the Moon's apparent diameter was smaller.

A total penumbral lunar eclipse is a lunar eclipse that occurs when the Moon becomes completely immersed in the penumbral cone of the Earth without touching the umbra.

Saros cycle series 110 for solar eclipses occurred at the Moon's descending node, repeating every 18 years, 11 days, containing 72 eclipses, 39 of which were umbral, all annular. This series began on 30 August 463 and ended on 17 October 1743. The annular eclipse with the longest duration was 29 December 1274 lasting 11 minutes and 44 seconds.
