The name of the stadium refers to the 1993 Zambia national football team air disaster which took the lives of most of its national football team.

The Matero Magic are a Zambian Professional basketball club from the Matero neighbourhood of Lusaka. Nicknamed the "Tamanga Boys", the team plays in the Zambia Basketball League and has won the championship a record 12 times. The Magic features many players who are also part of the Zambia national team.
The Zambia Basketball League is the first tier basketball league of Zambia. The league currently consists of 10 teams. It is organised by the Zambia Basketball Association (ZBA). In the past, the league was sponsored by Sprite and was named the Sprite ZBA.
