Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago is a national beauty pageant held annually since 1963, a year after Trinidad and Tobago's independence from the United Kingdom. The contest is meant to select a suitable delegate from both islands to compete in the Miss Universe pageant.

History

Trinidad debuted at Miss Universe in 1963 and in the time the country used "Trinidad" at Miss Universe. The first candidate was Jean Stodart. She competed at Miss Universe 1963 in the United States. Began in 1966 Trinidad and Tobago began to compete as Trinidad and Tobago at Miss Universe pageant.

International winners

The country's representative in 1977, Janelle Commissiong, became the first person of African ethnicity to win the Miss Universe contest, which was hosted in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. [1]

In 1998 Wendy Fitzwilliam captured the Miss Universe title in Hawaii, USA. She is the second woman from Trinidad and Tobago to win the coveted title after Janelle “Penny” Commissiong.

Miss Universe 1999

In May, 1999, the Miss Universe pageant was hosted at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago. A record 84 nations were represented. The winner that year was Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana. This was also the first time that two women of African descent won on consecutive occasions, with the prior year's winner being Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago.

Titleholders

The winner of Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago represents her country at the Miss Universe pageant. On occasion, when the winner does not qualify (due to age) for either contest, a runner-up is sent. Trinidad & Tobago has had two Miss Universe winners since the pageant's inception in 1952.

The pageant was held in London, UK at the Royal Albert Hall. In that year, the US was represented by aspiring actress Halle Berry.

Miss Universe 1999 was the 48th Miss Universe pageant, held on 26 May 1999 at the Chaguaramas Convention Centre in Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago. Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana was crowned by Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago at the end of the event. This edition marks the most recent time that a first-time entry of a country at Miss Universe has won and the third time in pageant's history, after Colombia in 1958 and Finland in 1952. This edition also saw a back-to-back victory by black women. 84 contestants competed in this year.

Miss Universe 1998 was the 47th Miss Universe pageant, was held on 12 May 1998 at the Stan Sheriff Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii. Wendy Fitzwilliam of Trinidad and Tobago was crowned by Brook Lee of the USA at the end of the event. This marked the only second time that Trinidad and Tobago has won Miss Universe. 81 contestants competed in this year.

Miss Angola is a national beauty pageant in Angola. The pageant was founded in 1997 where the winners were sent to Miss Universe. In 2022 the brand of Miss Angola also used the name of Miss Angola Universo or Miss Universo Angola, this aims to be the organization's concern to the Miss Universe competition.

Marion Faith Gillezeau is a Trinidadian pharmacist, athlete, model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago 2023. She succeeded Tya Jané Ramey who placed her in the Top 16 at Miss Universe 2022 in New Orleans in January, 2022. Some of the contestants included Miss San Fernando, Jen-ai Mohammed, and Miss Sangre Grande, Dalise Lockhart, who were named the first and second runners-up, respectively.
