[1] The series was founded as Nag Hammadi Studies (NHS; ISSN 0169-7749) in 1971 and is published by Brill. [2] The series includes monographs, conference proceedings, festschrifts, collected papers, and bibliographies published in English, German, and French.

In 1993, the series was renamed as Nag Hammadi and Manichaean Studies due to the addition of books on Manichaeism. As of 2023, the series editors are Jason D. BeDuhn, Dylan M. Burns, and Johannes van Oort. The volumes are 32–33 and 36 onwards. The latest volume number is 106 as of December 2023. [1]

Manichaeism is a former major world religion, founded in the 3rd century CE by the Parthian prophet Mani, in the Sasanian Empire.
The Gospel of Thomas is an extra-canonical sayings gospel. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate the works were buried in response to a letter from Bishop Athanasius declaring a strict canon of Christian scripture. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as 60 AD and late as 250 AD. Many scholars have seen it as evidence of the existence of a "Q source" which might have been similar in its form as a collection of sayings of Jesus, without any accounts of his deeds or his life and death, referred to as a sayings gospel.
The Nag Hammadi library is a collection of early Christian and Gnostic texts discovered near the Upper Egyptian town of Nag Hammadi in 1945.
The Epistle of Eugnostos or Eugnostos the Blessed is a Gnostic epistle found in Codices III and V of the Nag Hammadi library. Both copies seem to be a Coptic translation of a Greek original that was composed in Egypt around the late 1st century; the copy from Codex III is the earlier translation. Scholars note that the text is interrelated with The Sophia of Jesus Christ; SJC adds more specifically Christian elements to the cosmology-focused Eug. The text is a philosophical discourse on the nature of God and the world. The author asserts that previous human inquiries have failed to reach the truth about the nature of God, who is ineffable and beyond human understanding. The author describes a belief system in which there is an Immortal Man who reveals various aeons and powers with different names and authorities over different kingdoms and worlds.

He is known for his work on the Medinet Madi library, a collection of Coptic Manichaean manuscripts.
The Testimony of Truth is a Gnostic Christian text. It is the third of three treatises in Codex IX of the Nag Hammadi library texts, taking up pages 29–74 of the codex. The original title is unknown; the editor created the title based on expressions in the text, such as "the word of truth" and "true testimony." The text is a homily that argues for accepting spiritual truth and renouncing the material world. The author interprets the serpent that instructed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden as Christ, who revealed knowledge of a malevolent Creator. Testimony of Truth is also the only Nag Hammadi text that identifies opposing Gnostic Christian groups by name.

There are no original works of philosophy in the Coptic language. All surviving philosophical passages in Coptic are of Greek origin and many are anonymous. Mostly they deal with ethics and are treated like wisdom literature. Only a few texts have been edited and published.
Manichaeism has a rich tradition of visual art, starting with Mani himself writing the Book of Pictures.
Authoritative Discourse, also known as Authoritative Teaching or Authentikos Logos is a text about the journey of the soul. It is the third of eight treatises in Codex VI of the Nag Hammadi library texts, taking up pages 22–35 of the codex's 78 pages. The text uses metaphors extensively to describe the origin, condition, and ultimate destiny of the soul, calling the soul a prostitute, a seed of wheat, a contestant, an invalid, a fish, and a bride. Researchers have debated whether the text should be classified as Gnostic, Christian, or both.
