Pacific Royale Airways was an Indonesian commercial airline which received its government flight license in November 2011. [5] It received a formal Air Operator's Certificate (AOC) in May 2012, and made its first flight on June 11, 2012. [1] [3] [6] On 6 September 2012, the airline ceased operations on a temporary basis, before having its license revoked on 19 November 2012. [2]

History

Founding

In January 2011, former Riau Airlines president director, Samudra Sukardi, announced the founding of Pacific Royale Airways as a full-service scheduled carrier, funded by himself and two further investors, Gunarni Soeworodan and Indian businessman Tarun Trikha. [7] [8] Combined, a total of $60 million had been invested in the launch of the airline; this included costs to acquire the 10 aircraft mandated by the Indonesian government for commercial flight operations, consisting of the purchase five Fokker 50s, as well as four leased ex-Air Berlin Airbus A320-200s and a single leased Airbus A330-300. [9] [7]

The airline intended to compete with Garuda Indonesia, which held a monopoly in the Indonesian full-service airline market, [10] [11] and announced its plans to outfit its jet aircraft with on-demand inflight entertainment screens at every seat. [12] [13]

On 6 November 2011, the airline received a full service flight licence from the Indonesian government. [14]

Launch

On 7 January 2012, Pacific Royale received its first aircraft at Husein Sastranegara Airport, consisting of two ex-Ethiopian Airlines Fokker 50s, to be used for underserved rural and inter-island destinations as well as regional routes. [15] [16] In February 2012, the airline announced its plan to launch operations the next month, subject to regulatory approval. [17] The plan was later delayed to June of that year as it had yet to receive its AOC. [18] A final proving flight, the last requirement for AOC issuance, was conducted on April 21, 2012. Pacific Royale received its AOC on May 29, 2012, intending to initially launch operations from two bases in Batam and Surabaya. [19] [6]

Pacific Royale began commercial operations on 11 June 2012 using a Fokker 50 aircraft with a city-hopper flight originating in Surabaya and stopping at Pangkalan Bun, Semarang, and Bandung. [20] At its launch, Sukardi announced the airline's strategy to undercut rivalling full-service airlines by 10 percent, and stated the Pacific Royale's intentions to fly to Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi, and Moscow within one year of operations. [21]

Demise

In August 2012, CEO Samurdra Sukardi resigned, due to a dispute with shareholders regarding the terms of his new contract. [22] Tarun Trikha replaced Sukardi as CEO following his resignation. By this time, the airline had reportedly carried over 2000 passengers with an average flight load of 65-70 percent. [23] In the same month, it received its third Fokker 50, which underwent a reconfiguration to include a premium cabin. [24] [25]

On 6 September 2012, the airline announced a temporary cessation of flight operations, following the need to restructure the company as well as its operational strategy and organisational structure. [26] [25] By October 2012, flight operations remain ceased, with the airline citing maintenance reasons. [27] The airline announced that operations would resume on October 16, 2012, but its fleet remained grounded the following day. [28] [29] Pacific Royale's flight license was revoked the following month on 19 November 2012, [2] due to inactivity. [30] It is currently listed as "ceased operation in 2012".

Fleet

In order to meet minimum requirements for commercial flight operations, Pacific Royale planned to operate a fleet of ten aircraft. The fleet was to include five Fokker-50 turboprop airliners, all of which used to fly for Ethiopian Airlines, [31] and five leased jet airliners–four Airbus A320s and one Airbus A330. Two Fokker-50s flew at the airline's initial launch, with more Fokkers and Airbuses entering service in the following months. [4] [14]

Destinations

In May 2012, Pacific Royale Airways won approval to fly 62 domestic routes and 11 international routes. [3] The airline planned to operate a network carrier strategy, and use its Fokker-50s as feeders to link Surabaya, Batam City, Banyuwangi, Madiun, Pekanbaru, the Natuna Islands and Jambi. Its Airbus jets were to be used for international routes, such as Jakarta-Mumbai, Surabaya-Singapore, Surabaya-Hong Kong, Bandung-Singapore and Bandung-Kuala Lumpur. [4]

Koninklijke Nederlandsch-Indische Luchtvaart Maatschappij was the airline of the former Dutch East Indies. The word merpati is Indonesian for "dove", and Nusantara is a Javanese word found in the Pararaton meaning "the outer islands", referring to the Indonesian archipelago. PT Indonesia AirAsia, operating as Indonesia AirAsia, is an Indonesian low-cost airline based in Tangerang, Banten. It operates scheduled domestic and international services and is an Indonesian associate carrier of the Malaysian AirAsia. Its main base is Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta. Tigerair Mandala was a low-cost carrier headquartered in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was founded in 1969, by members of the Indonesian military dictatorship, as a full service airline. In 2006, as part of the ongoing reforms following the dictatorship ending in 1998, the military was forced to sell Mandala Airlines, with the new owners converting it to a low-cost carrier. In January 2011, facing bankruptcy, Mandala Airlines filed for protection from its creditors, and ceased operations. In May 2011, Singapore based Tiger Airways Holdings made an offer to purchase Mandala, but the transaction did not close until September 2011. The airline did not return to service until April 2012, renamed Tigerair Mandala, following an injection of fresh capital by Indonesian conglomerate Saratoga Investment Corp.

Sriwijaya Air is an Indonesian airline headquartered and based at Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Tangerang, Banten. It began its operations on 10 November 2003, and flies scheduled and chartered services on domestic routes within Indonesia as well as international routes to neighbouring countries. PT Pelita Air Service, trading as Pelita Air, is a domestic airline based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Its main operating base is Soekarno Hatta International Airport, and it is headquartered at Pondok Cabe Airport. Sempati Air was an airline based in Indonesia. Partially owned by friends and family of President Suharto of Indonesia, the airline ceased operations due to bankruptcy after its owner Suharto's May 1998 presidential resignation. Its IATA code has since been reassigned to SpiceJet.

Juanda International Airport (JIA) (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Juanda) (IATA: SUB, ICAO: WARR), is an international airport located in Sedati, Sidoarjo. It is now the third busiest airport in Indonesia (after Soekarno-Hatta and Ngurah Rai airport). This airport is located approximately 12 kilometers (7.5 mi) from Downtown Surabaya and serves the Surabaya metropolitan area, the metropolitan area of Surabaya plus extended urban area. Juanda International Airport is operated by PT Angkasa Pura I. The airport takes its name after Djuanda Kartawidjaja (1911–1963), the last Prime Minister of Indonesia who had suggested development of this airport. In 2019, the airport served about 500 aircraft per day.

Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport is an international airport in Makassar, South Sulawesi. It is located 20 km (12 mi) northeast of Makassar's city centre and is operated by PT. Angkasa Pura I. The current terminal was opened on 20 August 2008. The airport is the main gateway for flights to the eastern part of Indonesia, and named after Sultan Hasanuddin (1631–1670), a Sultan of Gowa, who fought against the Dutch East India Company in the 1660s.

TransNusa is an air carrier based in Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. It was launched in August 2005, serving various destinations from Kupang, Timor, using aircraft chartered from Pelita Air and Trigana Air Service. In August 2011, TransNusa received its own air operator's certificate (AOC) and scheduled commercial airline permit, operating as a regional carrier. The airline relaunched in 2022 after briefly ceasing operations in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is now a premium service carrier.

PT Batik Air Indonesia, operating as Batik Air, is an Indonesian scheduled airline based at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. The airline was founded in 2012 as the full-service arm of the Lion Air Group and made its maiden flight on 3 May 2013 from Jakarta to Manado and Yogyakarta. The airline is certified as a 3-Star Airline by Skytrax.

NAM Air is an Indonesian regional airline based at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. The airline was founded on 26 September 2013, and operates as regional feeder subsidiary for Sriwijaya Air. The airline serves smaller markets not targeted by its parent company.
