The Five Star Movement selected its candidates through two ballots held on SkyVote on April 18 and 22. [26] Party members were able to file self-nominations by April 8. [27] On April 26, there was an additional vote to add ten candidates, including the outgoing MEPs, who did not participate in the selection process as party members but were chosen by Conte as candidates for the European elections. [28] The ten candidates are: outgoing MEPs Maria Angela Danzì, Mario Furore and Sabrina Pignedoli; Ugo Biggeri; Martina Pluda; Carolina Morace; Pasquale Tridico; Maurizio Sibilio; Giuseppe Antoci and Cinzia Pilo. Carlo Calenda is an Italian business executive and politician. Since October 13, 2022, he has served as a Senator of the Republic and, since February 20, 2022, as Secretary of Azione, a party he primarily founded in 2019 and led until his election as Secretary.
Federico Pizzarotti is an Italian politician who served as mayor of Parma from 2012 to 2022. Elected mayor as a member of the Five Star Movement, which he had first joined in 2009, he successfully ran for re-election in 2017 through a civic list, after dissent within the M5S. He was the first M5S mayor in a provincial capital of Italy, after being elected on 21 May 2012 with 60.22% of votes in a runoff election. He was re-elected with 57.87% of the votes.

The Autonomies and Environment Pact is a centre-left network of political parties in Italy, aimining to combine regionalism and green politics. Most of its members are part of the European Free Alliance at the European level. AeA was established on 11 November 2019 and its president is Roberto Visentin, a former leader and senator of Lega Friuli–Lega Nord and founding member of the Pact for Autonomy.
