The Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport, Maine, United States, is Maine's oldest maritime museum and is designed to preserve and educate people regarding Maine's and Searsport's rich and unique maritime and shipbuilding history. [1] It was founded in 1936, and is located at 5 Church Street in the center of Searsport. [2]
The museum campus is composed of two sections. The original heart of the campus is located on both sides of Church Street, and between Church and Reservoir Streets, just north of Main Street (United States Route 1). [3] In addition to these buildings, the museum has expanded into three attached buildings on the north side of Main Street west of Knox Bros. Ave.
Designed as a unique 19th century seafaring village, the museum encompasses thirteen historic and modern buildings, houses a modern exhibit gallery features annual shows and is home to a regionally important library and archives focused on maritime history and regional genealogy. [4] [5] Eight of the museum's buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, five as part of a listing dedicated to the museum, and three as part of the Searsport Historic District. [2] [3] [6] [7] Among the collections is a significant photographic archives that includes glass plate negatives documenting life in New England and New York from 1909 and 1947 taken by the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company. Penobscot Bay has many working waterfronts including Rockland, Rockport, and Stonington, and Belfast upriver. Penobscot Bay is between Muscongus Bay and Blue Hill Bay, just west of Acadia National Park.
The Fort Point Light, or Fort Point Light Station, is located in Fort Point State Park, in Stockton Springs, Maine. A lighthouse at this point has served as an active aid to navigation since 1835; the present lighthouse dates to 1857, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Marlboro Packard was a master shipbuilder who lived in Searsport, Maine. He managed several economically important shipyards in Searsport. He built several ships including the ship Oneida in 1877 at the McGilvery Yard. In 1877 he built the ship William H. Conner, which was the last and largest full-rigged ship built in Searsport. This ship's construction took place at the Carver Yard and cost over $100,000. The half-model of this ship is currently housed at the Penobscot Marine Museum.
William Pierce Stubbs (1842–1909) or W.P. Stubbs was a marine painter in the Boston, Massachusetts, area in the 19th century. Examples of his work are in the Bostonian Society; Cape Ann Museum; and Peabody Essex Museum. He also lived in Bucksport, Maine.
Maine Maritime Museum, formerly the Bath Marine Museum, offers exhibits about Maine's maritime heritage, culture and the role Maine has played in regional and global maritime activities. Maine Maritime Museum has a large and diverse collection, made up of millions of documents, artifacts and pieces of artwork and includes an extensive research library.
The Page Farm & Home Museum is a museum on the campus of the University of Maine in Orono, Maine. Its mission is "to collect, document, preserve, interpret and disseminate knowledge of Maine history relating to farms and farming communities between 1865 and 1940, providing an educational and cultural experience for the public and a resource for researchers of this period." The University of Maine was founded in 1865 as the "Maine College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts". The centerpiece of the museum is the Maine Experiment Station Barn, a 19th-century barn, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, that is the last standing agricultural building on the campus.
The Squire Ignatius Haskell House is a historic house at 20 Main Street in the center of Deer Isle, Maine. Now home to the Pilgrim's Inn, this wood-frame house was built in 1793 by one of the maritime community's leading men, and is one of its oldest buildings. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Searsport is an incorporated town and deep water seaport located at the confluence of the Penobscot River estuary and the Penobscot Bay immediately SE of Sears Island and Cape Jellison in Waldo County, Maine, United States. Watchtide by the Sea, once known as the College Club Inn, is a historic traveler accommodation at 190 West Main Street in Searsport, Maine. Based around an early 19th-century house and developed as an inn and tea room in the early 20th century, the property exemplifies the adaptive reuse of older properties for the tourist trade in Maine. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.
The East Main Street Historic District of Searsport, Maine encompasses an architecturally distinctive collection of five residential properties on United States Route 1 east of the town center. All five houses are at least somewhat Italianate in style, and were built by ship's captains between about 1860 and 1875. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991; three of the properties are also individually listed.
The Hexagon Barn of Newport, Maine is believed to be the only building of its type in the state of Maine. Located at Spring and Railroad Streets, it is attached to a c. 1850 Greek Revival Cape, and is believed to date to that time. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

The Federal Street Historic District of Brunswick, Maine encompasses a part of the town whose development was influenced by its 18th-century success as a shipping center, and by the presence of Bowdoin College, whose historic central campus is part of the district. In addition to the campus, the district includes a series of relatively high-style Federal and later-period houses along Federal Street and Maine Street, which join the campus to downtown Brunswick. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
The Capt. John P. Nichols House is a historic house at 121 East Main Street in Searsport, Maine. Built in 1865 for a ship's captain from a prominent local family, it is one of Waldo County's finest examples of Italianate architecture, with a particularly elaborate cupola. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is now the Homeport Inn.
