Pittsburgh Pirates Radio Network

The Pittsburgh Pirates, the Major League Baseball franchise in Pittsburgh are carried on radio stations throughout four states including Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. In 2012, KDKA-FM in Pittsburgh became the flagship station, replacing WPGB-FM., [1] KDKA (AM) also simulcasts all weekday afternoon games as well as select other broadcasts, and serves as the backup station when 93.7 airs Pittsburgh Panthers football. [2]

Greg Brown and Joe Block do play by play. They are joined by a rotating cast of color commentators: John Wehner, Bob Walk, Neil Walker, Kevin Young, and Matt Capps. [3]

The two stations share studios at the Gateway Center in downtown Pittsburgh; KDKA-TV's transmitter is located in the city's Perry North neighborhood. Greg Brown is an American sportscaster, born in Washington, D.C., who has worked as a play-by-play announcer for the Pittsburgh Pirates on SportsNet Pittsburgh and KDKA-FM since 1994. He works with Bob Walk, Neil Walker, Matt Capps, Kevin Young, and John Wehner. Originally, Brown called games with Lanny Frattare until Frattare retired after the 2008 season.

The 1921 Pittsburgh Pirates season was the 40th season of the Pittsburgh Pirates franchise; the 35th in the National League. The Pirates finished second in the league standings with a record of 90–63. It would be the first that games would be aired on radio via the then new station KDKA-AM to listeners all over Pittsburgh, making that team the first in MLB to employ radio broadcasters for game broadcasts on the then new medium.

From 2011 to 2020, the translator carried a mainstream urban format, for most of that time in conjunction with Martz-owned WAMO. Audacy operates the station.

John Sanders is an American sports broadcaster, with over 25 years' experience commentating Major League Baseball games. He spent 16 years as a television announcer for the Cleveland Indians. Previously, he was on both television and radio broadcasts for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He also called Big East football and basketball games through the mid-2010’s.

John Joseph Block is a radio and TV play-by-play announcer who calls games for the Pittsburgh Pirates on SportsNet Pittsburgh, KDKA-AM, and KDKA-FM, joining the team in 2016 after four years with the Milwaukee Brewers.
