Sabinosuchus (meaning "Sabinas crocodile") is a genus of Mesoeucrocodylian, from the Maastrichtian Escondido Formation of Coahuila, Mexico, with Sabinosuchus coahuilensis as the type species. [1] [2] [3] First described as a putative dyrosaurid by Shiller II et al. (2016), [2] it was later recovered as a pholidosaurid by Jouve & Jalil (2020). [4]
Sabinosuchus was discovered by amateur paleontologist of the Palaeontologos Aficionados de Sabinas A.C. (PASAC) in 2002 in Mexico. All fossils of Sabinosuchus found by the team stem from the Maastrichtian Escondido Formation, although earlier reports wrongfully believed them to stem from the underlying Olmos Formation. The material collected constitutes two individuals known from fragmentary remains that were later reassembled. Due to this the material was catalogued under several specimen numbers. The holotype material was initially catalogued as specimens PAS 945 to PAS 949 and PAS 952 once reassembled to form an almost complete specimen. The other specimen, catalogued as PAS 950 and PAS 951, represents a part of the rostrum alongside an articulated piece of the mandible. All specimens were donated to the El Museo Muzquiz. [2]
The name Sabinosuchus is a combination of Sabinas, a town near the type locality, and the Greek Souchos (crocodile). The species name is likewise based on the area the specimen was found, referring to the state of Coahuila. [2]
Sabinosuchus was a longirostrine animal, meaning its snout was proportionally long and slender. The nasal bones are unfused over their preserved length and covered in teardrop-shaped pits making it the most ornamented skull bone. The maxillae share similar ornamentation, with a dense clutter of circular pits present towards the posterior of the bone. The sides of the bone meanwhile are much smoother by comparison. The mandible is approximately 92 cm (36 in) long, less than half of that consisting of the mandibular symphysis. The first alveoli preserved in the holotype were originally believed to be the first and second, however, reexamination by Jouve and Jalil later showed that these alveoli more likely housed the third and fourth dentary teeth given their lateral placement. [4] These enlarged alveoli give the tip of a dentary a slightly rounded form. The better preserved of the two dentaries preserved nineteen alveoli, adding up to a total of twenty-one following the 2020 examination. Most dentary alveoli are circular in shape and range in diameter from 2.2–4.4 cm (0.87–1.73 in). The thirteenth to fifteenth differ significantly in arrangement however, emerging in a triangular pattern and are followed by closely spaced and smaller alveoli. The teeth are generally robust with a slight curvature towards the tip of the snout, but with better developed curviture and slight anteroposterior compression in the rear portions of the jaw (at least from the seventeenth dentary tooth onward). The initial description by Schiller thought Sabinosuchus to be a dyrosaurid, a group of Neosuchians found in marine sediments of the Cretaceous to Early Eocene. This assignment was based on the size of the seventh dentary alveolus (smaller than the eight) and the proportions of the mandibular symphysis (approximately as wide as high). However, several problems were found by the authors. The fragmentary remains heavily limit the available characters for the phylogenetic analysis and even fewer are of value for determining its position within the clade. The matter is further complicated by the fact that the analysis recovered Sabinosuchus in a basal position within Dyrosauridae, being recovered as a sister taxa to the brevirostrine Anthracosuchus . However, very little mandibular remains are known from basal dyrosaurs, making comparison difficult. Overall, while first described as a putative dyrosaur, Schiller and colleagues make note that this assignment was poorly supported. Their initial phylogenetic tree is depicted below. [2]

By contrast, Schiller and colleagues identified several morphological features in Sabinosuchus which it shared with taxa used as outgroups in the original analysis, namely Sarcosuchus , Terminonaris and Elosuchus , typically considered to be pholidosaurids (although later analysis recovered Elosuchus as closer to Dyrosaurs). Additionally, the absence of a long, curved, retroarticular process was also seen as a possible indication that Sabinosuchus wasn't a dyrosaur, but this element is not preserved in the majority of derived dyrosaurs. A later study published by Jouve and Jalil in 2020 re-evaluated several taxa previously thought to be dyrosaurs or goniopholids, including Sabinosuchus. Their analysis placed several of these taxa within Pholidosauridae, extending the range of the group into the Maastrichtian. In their analysis, Sabinosuchus claded together with Woodbinesuchus and Oceanosuchus . Importantly, the authors note that what was described as the first and second dentary alveoli in Schiller 2016 actually represented the third and fourth alveoli. Subsequently, the smaller seventh alveolous thought to indicate dyrosaurid affinities would actually be the ninth. In addition, the size difference is not as significant as suggested by Schiller. They conclude that the features present in Sabinosuchus are much more consistent with pholidosaurids, recovering a phylogenetic tree with much stronger support than previous analysis on Sabinosuchus. Prognathodon is an extinct genus of marine lizard belonging to the mosasaur family. It is classified as part of the Mosasaurinae subfamily, alongside genera like Mosasaurus and Clidastes. Prognathodon has been recovered from deposits ranging in age from the Campanian to the Maastrichtian in the Middle East, Europe, New Zealand, and North America.
Dyrosauridae is a family of extinct neosuchian crocodyliforms that lived from the Campanian to the Eocene. Dyrosaurid fossils are globally distributed, having been found in Africa, Asia, Europe, North America and South America. Over a dozen species are currently known, varying greatly in overall size and cranial shape. A majority were aquatic, some terrestrial and others fully marine, with species inhabiting both freshwater and marine environments. Ocean-dwelling dyrosaurids were among the few marine reptiles to survive the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.
Arambourgisuchus is an extinct genus of dyrosaurid crocodylomorph from the late Palaeocene of Morocco, found in the region of Sidi Chenane in 2000, following collaboration by French and Moroccan institutions, and described in 2005 by a team led by palaeontologist Stéphane Jouve. Arambourgisuchus was a large animal with an elongated skull 1 meter in length.
Hyposaurus is a genus of extinct marine dyrosaurid crocodyliform. Fossils have been found in Paleocene aged rocks of the Iullemmeden Basin in West Africa, Campanian–Maastrichtian Shendi Formation of Sudan and Maastrichtian through Danian strata in New Jersey, Alabama and South Carolina. Isolated teeth comparable to Hyposaurus have also been found in Thanetian strata of Virginia. It was related to Dyrosaurus. The priority of the species H. rogersii has been debated, however there is no sound basis for the recognition of more than one species from North America. The other North American species are therefore considered nomina vanum.
Argochampsa is an extinct genus of eusuchian crocodylomorph, usually regarded as a gavialoid crocodilian, related to modern gharials. It lived in the Paleocene of Morocco. Described by Hua and Jouve in 2004, the type species is A. krebsi, with the species named for Bernard Krebs. Argochampsa had a long narrow snout, and appears to have been marine in habits.
Pholidosauridae is an extinct family of aquatic neosuchian mesoeucrocodylian crocodylomorphs. Fossils have been found in Europe, Africa, North America and South America. The pholidosaurids first appeared in the fossil record during the Bathonian stage of the Middle Jurassic. Jouve & Jalil (2020) described postcranial material of a pholidosaurid from the Paleocene (Danian) of Ouled Abdoun Basin (Morocco), representing the most recent record of the family. The authors also reinterpreted putative Maastrichtian dyrosaurid Sabinosuchus as a pholidosaurid, and argued that at least two independent pholidosaurid lineages reached the Maastrichtian, among which one survived the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event. Before the publication of this study it was thought that the family became extinct during the Late Turonian stage of the Late Cretaceous.
Cerrejonisuchus is an extinct genus of dyrosaurid crocodylomorph. It is known from a complete skull and mandible from the Cerrejón Formation in northeastern Colombia, which is Paleocene in age. Specimens belonging to Cerrejonisuchus and to several other dyrosaurids have been found from the Cerrejón open-pit coal mine in La Guajira. The length of the rostrum is only 54-59% of the total length of the skull, making the snout of Cerrejonisuchus the shortest of all dyrosaurids.
Rhabdognathus is an extinct genus of dyrosaurid crocodylomorph. It is known from rocks dating to the Paleocene epoch from western Africa, and specimens dating back to the Maastrichtian era were identified in 2008. It was named by Swinton in 1930 for a lower jaw fragment from Nigeria. The type species is Rhabdognathus rarus. Stéphane Jouve subsequently assessed R. rarus as indeterminate at the species level, but not at the genus level, and thus dubious. Two skulls which were assigned to the genus Rhabdognathus but which could not be shown to be identical to R. rarus were given new species: R. aslerensis and R. keiniensis, both from Mali. The genus formerly contained the species Rhabdognathus compressus, which was reassigned to Congosaurus compressus after analysis of the lower jaw of a specimen found that it was more similar to that of the species Congosaurus bequaerti. Rhabdognathus is believed to be the closest relative to the extinct Atlantosuchus.
Chalawan is an extinct genus of pholidosaurid mesoeucrocodylian known from the Late Jurassic or Early Cretaceous Phu Kradung Formation of Nong Bua Lamphu Province, northeastern Thailand. It contains a single species, Chalawan thailandicus, with Chalawan shartegensis as a possible second species.
Nankangia is an extinct genus of caenagnathoid oviraptorosaurian dinosaur known from the Upper Cretaceous Nanxiong Formation of Nankang County, Ganzhou City of Jiangxi Province, southeastern China. It contains a single species, Nankangia jiangxiensis. N. jiangxiensis coexisted with at least four other caenagnathoids, including but not limited to Corythoraptor, Banji, Ganzhousaurus and Jiangxisaurus. The relatively short dentary and non-downturned mandibular symphysis of Nankangia suggest that it may have been more herbivorous than carnivorous. Its diet consisted of leaves and seeds.
Sahitisuchus is an extinct genus of sebecid mesoeucrocodylian known from Rio de Janeiro State of southeastern Brazil. It contains a single species, Sahitisuchus fluminensis. It is a terrestrial sebecid, however also adopted to a semi-aquatic lifestyle to some degree, most probably coexisting with the semi-aquatic alligatorid Eocaiman itaboraiensis.
Aymberedactylus is a genus of tapejarid pterosaur from the Early Cretaceous Crato Formation of Brazil. It contains a single species, A. cearensis.
Acostasaurus is an extinct genus of possibly Thalassophonean pliosaurid known from the Barremian of the Paja Formation, Colombia. The type specimen, UNDG R-1000, is known from a near complete skull, and postcranial elements including a complete hindlimb and various vertebrae. The specimen has an estimated size of over 4 metres (13 ft) in length.
Azilestes is a genus of probable zhelestid eutherian mammal, a family consisting of small herbivores, that was discovered in the early Maastrichtian Grès de Labarre Formation of France. It is a monotypic genus, with only type species A. ragei being known. Only one specimen, the holotype described in 2021, is known. It consists of a partial dentary with teeth.
Brachiosuchus is an extinct genus of dyrosaurid crocodyliform known from the Late Cretaceous Kababish Formation of Sudan. It contains a single species, Brachiosuchus kababishensis.
Antaeusuchus taouzensis is a species of peirosaurid notosuchian from the Late Cretaceous Kem Kem Group of Morocco. It was described in 2021, and it is the only species in the genus Antaeusuchus. It is the fourth notosuchian described from the region and the second Kem Kem peirosaurid after Hamadasuchus. A 2023 study proposes that Antaeusuchus may not be distinct enough to warrant its own genus and that it instead represents another species of Hamadasuchus.
Sacacosuchus is an extinct monospecific genus of marine gavialid that lived along the coast of the south-east Pacific from approximately 19 to 6.3 million years ago. Its fossils have been found in the Chilcatay and Pisco Formations of Peru, where it coexisted with the much larger Piscogavialis. Based on its skull, Sacacosuchus was most likely a generalist feeder with an estimated total body length of 4.32 m (14.2 ft). Its extinction is thought to have been caused by a combination of factors including falling sea levels and global cooling.
Eardasaurus is a genus of thalassophonean pliosaurid from the middle Jurassic Oxford Clay Formation. The animal would have measured over 4.7 m (15 ft) long and possessed a high amount of teeth relative to other pliosaurs. Its teeth show distinct ridges formed by the tooth enamel, some of which are very pronounced and similar to carinae, giving the teeth a cutting edge.
Eurycephalosuchus is an extinct genus of orientalosuchine alligatoroid from the Late Cretaceous Jiangxi Province of China. Known from a well preserved skull and mandible alongside various postcranial remains, Eurycephalosuchus possessed a short and broad skull with a very short skulltable. Eurycephalosuchus lived with at least one other crocodilian, an indetermined member of the clade Brevirostres. The genus is monotypic, containing only the species Eurycephalosuchus gannanensis.
Varanosuchus is an extinct genus of atoposaurid neosuchian from the Early Cretaceous Sao Khua Formation of Thailand. Varanosuchus is known from three individuals which preserve assorted postcranial material and a complete skull. The skull of Varanosuchus was altirostral, meaning it wasn't flattened like in modern crocodilians and instead much deeper, while the limbs were slender and straight, leading to it somewhat resembling a monitor lizard. Little is known about the ecology of atoposaurids, however, based on the slender, erect limbs, the altirostral skull and the well ornamented osteoderms it has been suggested that Varanosuchus was a terrestrial animal with some semi-aquatic affinities. Only a single species is recognized, Varanosuchus sakonnakhonensis.
