Badakhshan is a historic region comprising parts of what is now northeastern Afghanistan, eastern Tajikistan, and the Tashkurgan county in China. The name is retained in Badakhshan Province, which is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan and is located in Northeastern Afghanistan. Much of historic Badakhshan lies within Tajikistan's Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region, located in the southeastern part of the country. The music of Badakhshan is an important part of the region's cultural heritage.

Ishkashim Persian: اشکاشم, also transliterated Ishkashem or Eshkashem, is a town in Badakhshan Province in north-eastern Afghanistan, the capital of Ishkashim District. It lies on the Panj River, at a point where its direction turns sharply north. Ishkashim lies opposite a town of the same name in Tajikistan, although the Tajik town is normally transliterated Ishkoshim following Tajik practice. A bridge linking the two towns was reconstructed in 2006.
Sher Shall is a village in Chitral, Karim Abad, Pakistan. It is near Terich Mir, the highest mountain in the terrain of Hindu Kush. Prior to 1969, the area was under the rule of Katoor dynasty of Chitral. At that time the village was governed by local governor prince Muftahul Mulk. When Chitral was acknowledged as a district of Pakistan, Sher Shall felled into the domain of Garam Chashma Tehsil, becoming a part of Chitral. In terms of its population the village holds approximately 80 house holds composing a population of around 700 people. The area is famous for fruits such as apple, apricot, pear, cherry mulberry grapes etc. The fruits are sent to the market in summer. On March 4, 2012, at least three avalanches struck the Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan. One of those avalanches destroyed a small village of about 200 people. The name of the village is uncertain; some sources call it Dasty and locate it in Darzab District, and others call it Sherin Nazim and locate it in Shekay District. Two other villages were affected by the avalanche. At least 50 people were killed in the disaster.

Maimay, also known as Darwaz-e Payin, or simply Darwaz, is a district in Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan. It was created in 2005 from part of Darwaz District. It is home to approximately 12,000 residents. This district borders the Kuf Ab, Raghistan, Shighnnan, and Nusay districts, along with some districts in the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, Tajikistan, including Vanj, Rushon, and Shughnon. The district was historically part of the Darwaz principality, a semi-independent statelet ruled by a mir.
On 2 May 2014, a pair of mudslides occurred in Argo District, Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan. The death toll is uncertain, the number of deaths varying from 350 to 2,700. Around 300 houses were buried and over 14,000 were affected. Rescuers responding to the initial mudslide were struck by a second mudslide, which hampered rescue efforts.

On February 24–28, 2015, avalanches in Panjshir Province, Afghanistan killed at least 310 people, and another 129 were wounded. 1,000 Afghani troops were deployed to Panjshir Province to assist rescue efforts. According to the acting governor of Panjshir, Abdul Rahman Kabiri, these avalanches were the worst Afghanistan had seen in three decades.
On 23 April 2015, a landslide occurred in the Khawahan district of Badakhshan Province in Afghanistan. Around 100 houses were destroyed and 52 people were killed by the landslide. A second landslide occurred on 26 April, displacing 120 families.
The 2017 Afghanistan avalanches were a series of avalanches that struck villages on the Afghanistan–Pakistan border between February 4 and 6, 2017. More than 100 people reportedly died in the disaster, including more than 50 people in Nuristan Province and at least 19 people in the neighbouring Badakhshan area of Pakistan's Chitral region. Dozens of homes and fhams were destroyed, and hundreds of animals died due to the avalanches. In Pakistan, the affected areas included regions of Balochistan, Mastung, Kalat and Kharan.
In June 2020, insurgents and the Taliban carried out attacks throughout Afghanistan in a continuation of attacks carried out in May.
