The South Serrano Avenue Historic District is a historic district of early 20th Century homes along the 400 block of South Serrano Avenue in the Mid-City section of Los Angeles, California. The block of well-preserved homes was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

It is the sole intact block of single family homes in an area having many large apartment buildings. [2]

The listing included 17 houses counted as contributing buildings, one non-contributing residence, and two vacant lots. All of the houses were built during the period from 1912 to 1921. [2]

Several of the buildings were designed by architect Frank M. Tyler:

Architect Harry Hayden Whiteley, who had worked in Tyler's office from 1907 to 1910, also designed some works in the district, and architect Henry J. Knauer designed one: the house at 403 S. Serrano Avenue. [2]

Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building (1928) United States historic place

The Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building was built in 1928 and for many years housed one of Los Angeles's most successful African American-owned businesses, the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Company. It is located in the heart of the city's Central Avenue commercial district that was a center of the jazz world in the 1930s and 1940s. The two-story building was designed by architect James H. Garrott and constructed by Louis Blodgett in the Mission Revival style. The company occupied the second floor, while the first floor was rented out to local merchants. The noted Dunbar Hotel is located on the next block to the north.

The 52nd Place Historic District is a historic district consisting of American Craftsman style homes in the Central-Alameda neighborhood of the South Los Angeles, California. African Americans became the dominant demographic group in the district beginning around 1930 with important African-American people living here. The district includes 37 contributing buildings and seven non-contributing buildings. The contributing buildings are one-story Craftsman houses designed and built by Tifal Brothers between 1911 and 1914. The characteristic feature of the contributing buildings include "low-pitched gabled roofs with overhanging eaves and exposed rafter tails, front porches and chimneys made of brick or river rock, and multi-paned wood-framed casement windows." The district is located on 52nd Place between McKinley Avenue on the east and Avalon Boulevard on the west and lies just east of the South Park neighborhood.

Russian Village District United States historic place

The Russian Village District comprises 15 folk architecture style houses and was built by Konstanty ("Steve") Stys, a Polish immigrant, and others during the Great Depression. It is located at the intersection of South Mills Avenue and East Cucamonga Avenue in Claremont, California. Shirley Simons

Thomas Shirley Simons, Sr., commonly known as Shirley Simons was a prominent architect of Tyler, Texas. He was born in 1897 at Taylor, Texas, and raised in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Rice Institute in 1919 with a Bachelor of Science in architecture. He also served in the field artillery during World War I from September through November 1918.

William and Alexander Curlett Irish-born American architect

William F. Curlett and Alexander Edward Curlett were a father-and-son pair of architects. They worked together as partners under the name of William Curlett and Son, Architects from c. 1908–1916. Aleck Curlett partnered with Claud Beelman as Curlett & Beelman (1919-1932).

Poppy Peak Historic District United States historic place

The Lincoln Park Historic District in Pomona, California is a 45-block, 230-acre residential neighborhood. The district consists of 821 structures—primarily single family homes built between the 1890s through the 1940s—featuring a wide variety of architectural styles from late Victorian and National Folk homes, Craftsman and Craftsman-influenced homes, as well as late 19th and 20th Century Revival architectural styles including Colonial, Mission/Spanish, Tudor and Classical Revival.
