The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence is a diocese of the Catholic Church in the United States. The diocese was erected by Pope Pius IX on February 17, 1872 and originally comprised the entire state of Rhode Island and the counties of Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes and Nantucket in the state of Massachusetts. On March 12, 1904, those four counties were separated from the Diocese of Providence to form the Diocese of Fall River, Massachusetts, leaving the Diocese of Providence with just the state of Rhode Island.

It is known for its historic campus at 1303 Mendon Road, which includes a Gothic Revival style church along with two late 19th-century, clapboard-sheathed, wood-frame structures on the east side of Mendon Road. The church and its accompanying buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 as St. Joseph's Church Complex.

The Quality Hill Historic District is a predominantly residential historic district on the east side of Pawtucket, Rhode Island. This area was developed as an upper-class residential area between the 1850s and the 1940s, and its architecture reflects a cross-section of styles popular in that time. Most of its residential stock is single-family residences, and is generally set on ample lots, although there are areas of more dense construction. The most densely populated area is a section of the neighborhood which was cut off from the rest by the construction of I-95. The most prominent non-residential buildings are the Pawtucket Congregational Church, Saint Raphael Academy, Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, and the complex of the Roman Catholic St. Joseph's Parish.
St. Paul's Church is a historic Episcopal church at 50 Park Place in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. It is a stone Gothic Revival structure, designed by Sanders & Thornton of Providence and built in 1901, for a congregation established in 1816. The property also includes a Guild Hall, built in the Tudor Revival style in 1915, and a 1963 brick office wing. A Revere bell hangs in the church belfry.
Trinity Episcopal Church was a historic church located at 48 Main Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Built by the Episcopalians, the building was sold to the Catholics in 1977 and became the St. George Maronite Catholic Church within the Diocese of Providence. The church burned down in 2005, and was not rebuilt.

Established as a parish in 1835, it is the city's oldest Roman Catholic establishment. Its 1858 Romanesque Revival church and 1872 Second Empire rectory are particularly fine architectural examples of their styles. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

It is the church of the oldest Catholic parish in the state. The church is also notable for hosting the wedding of Jacqueline Bouvier and Senator, later President, John F. Kennedy in 1953.
Ambrose J. Murphy (1869–1949) was an American architect whose practice was based in Providence Rhode Island. He was a specialist in ecclesiastical work and, in a career that spanned over 40 years, designed many buildings for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence Rhode Island and Fall River Massachusetts.
