The fifteenth season of the American reality television show, The Voice premiered on September 24, 2018, on NBC. [1] Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and Blake Shelton returned as coaches from the previous season. Jennifer Hudson, who last coached in season 13, returned, replacing Alicia Keys. For the first time in its history, the show featured a fifth coach, Kelsea Ballerini, who selected contestants to participate in The Comeback Stage. [2]

Reality television is a genre of television programming that documents purportedly unscripted real-life situations, often starring unknown individuals rather than professional actors. Reality television came to prominence in the late 1990s and the early 2000s with the global successes of the series Survivor, Idols, and Big Brother, all of which became global franchises. <i>The Voice</i> (U.S. TV series) American talent competition series

The Voice is an American singing competition television series broadcast on NBC. It premiered during the spring television cycle on April 26, 2011, and expanded into the fall cycle with the premiere of the third season on September 10, 2012. Based on the original The Voice of Holland, it has aired fifteen seasons and aims to find currently unsigned singing talent contested by aspiring singers, age 13 or over, drawn from public auditions.

Adam Levine American singer-songwriter

Adam Noah Levine is a U.S. singer-songwriter and actor. He is the lead singer for the pop rock band Maroon 5. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Levine began his musical career in 1994, when he co-founded the band Kara's Flowers, of which he was the lead vocalist and guitarist. The band split up after their only album, The Fourth World, which did not gain popularity. In 2001, the group was reformed – with guitarist James Valentine joining the line-up – and began a new musical chapter, changing their name to Maroon 5. In 2002, the band released their first album, Songs About Jane, which went multi-platinum in the US. Since then, they have released five more albums: It Won't Be Soon Before Long (2007), Hands All Over (2010), Overexposed (2012), V (2014), and Red Pill Blues (2017). As part of Maroon 5, Levine has received three Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, an MTV Video Music Award and a World Music Award.

Chevel Shepherd was named winner of this season, marking Clarkson's second win as a coach, and maintaining her winning streak from last season. This also makes Clarkson the first female coach to win more than one season, and the first female coach to win back-to-back seasons.

Chevel Shepherd is an American singer. She is the winner of season 15 of the American talent competition The Voice at the age of 16. On May 26, 2019 Chevel performed God Bless America before the 103rd running of the Indianapolis 500.

Coaches and hosts

On May 11, 2018, Kelly Clarkson confirmed she would return alongside Jennifer Hudson, Adam Levine, and Blake Shelton. Carson Daly will return for his fifteenth season as host. It was announced on September 10 that Kelsea Ballerini would become a fifth coach, mentoring unsuccessful auditioners on an online version in a new round called The Comeback Stage. [3]

Kelly Clarkson American singer, actress

Kelly Brianne Clarkson is an American singer, songwriter, and television personality. She rose to fame in 2002 after winning the inaugural season of the reality competition television series American Idol, which earned her a record deal with RCA Records. Clarkson's debut single, "A Moment Like This", topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the country's best-selling single of 2002. It was followed by the release of her debut album, Thankful (2003), which debuted atop the US Billboard 200. Trying to reinvent her image, Clarkson decided to part ways with Idol management and shifted to pop rock music for her second album, Breakaway (2004). After numerous top 40 radio number-one singles, such as "Since U Been Gone" and "Because of You", the album sold over 15 million copies worldwide and earned Clarkson two Grammy Awards.

Jennifer Hudson American singer–songwriter & actress

Jennifer Kate Hudson is an American singer and actress. She rose to fame in 2004 as a finalist on the third season of American Idol, placing seventh. Hudson made her film debut as Effie White in Dreamgirls (2006), for which she received an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in Sex and the City (2008), The Secret Life of Bees (2008), and Black Nativity (2013). In 2015, she made her Broadway debut in the role of Shug Avery in The Color Purple.

Blake Shelton American country music singer and television personality

Blake Tollison Shelton is an American country singer and television personality. In 2001, he made his debut with the single "Austin". The lead-off single from his self-titled debut album, "Austin" spent five weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. The now Platinum-certified debut album also produced two more top 20 entries. Although the album was released on Giant Records Nashville, he was transferred to Warner Bros. Records Nashville after Giant closed in late 2001.

The Block, added in season 14, would return for a second season. A new round this season, entitled "The Comeback Stage", will see six artists who did not turn a chair in the Blind Auditions get a second chance to return to the competition for the live shows. The six artists remained, mentored by Kelsea Ballerini, will compete against each other in a digital companion series, with the winner securing a spot in the Top 13. [3]

This season's advisors for the Battle Rounds are CeeLo Green for Team Adam, Thomas Rhett for Team Kelly, Halsey for Team Jennifer, and Keith Urban for Team Blake. [4] Mariah Carey assigned as a mentor for all teams during the knockouts.

Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, known professionally as CeeLo Green, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer, and actor.

Thomas Rhett Country music singer

Thomas Rhett Akins Jr. is an American country music singer and songwriter. His father is the singer Rhett Akins. Rhett has released four studio albums for Big Machine Records' Valory Music imprint: It Goes Like This (2013), Tangled Up (2015), Life Changes (2017). and Center Point Road (2019). These albums have produced seventeen singles on the Hot Country and Country Airplay charts, with twelve reaching the No. 1 position on the latter: "It Goes Like This", "Get Me Some of That", "Make Me Wanna", "Crash and Burn", "Die a Happy Man", "T-Shirt", "Star of the Show", "Craving You", "Unforgettable", "Marry Me", "Life Changes", and "Sixteen". In addition to much of his own material, Rhett has written singles for Jason Aldean, Lee Brice, Florida Georgia Line, LoCash and Michael Ray among others.

Halsey (singer) American singer, songwriter, and actress

Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, known professionally as Halsey, is an American singer and songwriter. Her initial recognition came from her self-released music posted on social media platforms, and in 2014, she was signed by Astralwerks after her song "Ghost" went viral on SoundCloud. Later that year, she released her debut EP, Room 93; to promote the EP and her debut studio album, she toured with larger acts. The debut studio album, Badlands (2015), debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. "Ghost" was rereleased as the lead single from Badlands, and three new singles were released after, all of which were certified Platinum and achieved minor commercial success. To promote the album, Halsey embarked on her debut headlining world tour.

The Battles

The second half of the Battle Rounds started on October 15. [6] Season fifteen's advisors include: CeeLo Green for Team Adam, Thomas Rhett for Team Kelly, Halsey for Team Jennifer, and Keith Urban for Team Blake. [4] The coaches can steal two losing artists from other coaches. Contestants who win their battle or are stolen by another coach will advance to the Knockout rounds.

Keith Urban Australian country music singer

Keith Lionel Urban is a New Zealand-Australian singer, songwriter and record producer well-known for his work in country music. In 1991, he released a self-titled debut album and charted four singles in Australia before moving to the United States the following year. He found work as a session guitarist before starting a band known as The Ranch, which recorded one studio album on Capitol Nashville and charted two singles on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

The Knockouts

The Knockouts round started on October 29. [7] The coaches can each steal one losing artist from another team and save one artist who lost their Knockout on their own team. The top 24 contestants then moved on to the Live Playoffs. Mariah Carey is the advisor to contestants from all teams in this round. [8] Cody Ray Raymond from Team Kelly dropped out from the competition due to personal reasons. [9] Kelly Clarkson grouped three of her members into one knockout, with two contestants from the trio advancing, with the third being declared the loser, just like on the eighth season.

(Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018)		The fourteenth episode was a special episode titled "The Road to the Live Shows." The episode showed the best moments of the season so far, including the blind auditions, the journey of the top 24 contestants, and some unseen footage.

The Comeback Stage

For this season, the show added a brand new phase of competition called The Comeback Stage that was exclusive to The Voice mobile app, The Voice YouTube channel, Instagram TV, Facebook, Twitter, and NBC.com. [10] After failing to turn a chair in the blind auditions, artists had the chance to be selected by fifth coach Kelsea Ballerini to become a member of her six-person team. The Comeback Stage consists of three rounds. In the first, it is the Battle round. Artists would be paired up and given a solo song to perform for Kelsea's favor (similar to the Knockouts). In the second, it is the Comeback's Knockout round. The three remaining artists would be given another song to sing, with two of them advancing to the final stage. The third and final stage is run in conjunction with the Live Playoffs. The two remaining artists perform live for America's votes in the first Twitter Instant Save of the season, with the winner officially joining one of the four main teams of their choosing as a part of the Top 13.

Week 1: Live Playoffs (Nov 12 & 13)

The Live Playoffs comprised episodes 15 and 16. The top twenty-four artists perform, with two artists from each team advancing based on the viewers' vote, and each coach completing their respective teams with their own choice. Kelsea Ballerini was added as the fifth coach and has coached six artists who did not turn a chair in the Blind Auditions to help them get a second chance to return to the competition for the live shows. They had their own battles and knockouts, and only two, Ayanna Joni and Lynnea Moorer, get the chance to enter the Top 13 via America's vote (similar to the Instant Save).[ citation needed ]

Lynnea Moorer won the Comeback Stage matchup, and chose to be part of Team Kelly on the Top 13.

With the elimination of Kameron Marlowe, this marked the first time since the seventh season that Adam Levine did not include the artist that he stole in the Knockouts in his top three, as Brian Johnson, Amy Vachal, Shalyah Fearing, Josh Gallagher, Lilli Passero, Adam Cunningham, and Sharane Calister were all either chosen by him or voted into his top three by the public in the eighth, ninth, tenth, eleventh, twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth seasons, respectively.

Week 2: Top 13 (Nov 19 & 20)

This week's theme was “Dedications”. The three artists with the fewest votes competed for an Instant Save, with two leaving the competition.

This season, the live show voting mechanism has changed. iTunes purchases of the singles released by the top 13 artists no longer count as votes, and have instead been replaced with Apple Music streams counting as votes. This also affected the iTunes multiplier bonus from past seasons. Now, the artist who racks up the most streams on Apple Music during the voting window have their Apple Music votes multiplied by 5. Week 5: Semifinals (Dec 10 & 11)

The Top 8 performed on Monday, December 10, 2018, with the results following on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Three artists were automatically moved on to the finale. The two artists with the fewest votes were immediately eliminated and the middle three contended for the remaining spot in the next finale via the Instant Save. Kelly Clarkson brought in Brynn Cartelli to help her team in the rehearsals. In addition to their individual songs, each artist performed a duet with another artist in the competition, though these duets were not available for purchase on iTunes.

Once again, the Apple Music multiplier was awarded to Chris Kroeze. With the elimination of Reagan Strange, Adam Levine no longer had any artists left on his team. This was the second time in a row after the fourteenth season that he had lost his entire team prior to the finale, and the fourth time overall. The second time was in the fourth season, and the first time was in the third season. Interestingly, this was the second time that he will have gone without a finalist in back-to-back seasons. With the advancements of Chevel Shepherd and Kennedy Holmes, this season also marked the second time that two female coaches were represented in the finale, with Shepherd representing Kelly Clarkson, and Holmes representing Jennifer Hudson. The first time that this happened was the fourteenth season. In addition, Holmes's advancement also marked Hudson's first American season with a finalist, as she did not have one in the thirteenth season. With the advancement of Chris Kroeze, this season marks the first time that an artist who lost his Knockout round but was saved by his coach made it to the finale.

Week 6: Finale (Dec. 17 & 18)

With Chevel Shepherd's victory, this marks Kelly Clarkson's second consecutive victory as a coach and makes her the only rotating coach who has won more than once, as well as the third coach overall to win more than once. In addition, Shepherd's victory marks the first victory by a country artist not, at any point in time, coached by Blake Shelton, meaning that Clarkson also became the first coach to defeat Shelton with a country artist, a goal that, strangely enough, Adam Levine had attempted in several different seasons.

Controversies

Top 10 Elimination

The "Instant Save" during the top 10 garnered controversy. The bottom group for that week featured three contestants: Dave Fenley (Team Blake), DeAndre Nico (Team Adam), and Reagan Strange (Team Adam). Adam Levine made controversial comments that some fans felt were unfair to Nico, expressing their concern that Adam was "throwing him under the bus" in favor of Strange, who was unable to perform due to "health reasons." Following Nico's performance, Levine chose to advocate for Strange, telling viewers to vote for her despite her not being able to perform, and only briefly touched upon Nico’s performance. After the commercial break, fellow coach Kelly Clarkson came in defense of Levine's speech to the singer, stating, "I know Adam and his heart, and I know he loves his team. He feels really bad for Reagan. But I just want to say, DeAndre, you sang the hell out of that song!" The vote was reported close, with Strange advancing by one percent (thirty-eight percent to Nico's thirty-seven percent).

Following Strange's advancement, fans criticized Levine online for his "lack of respect" towards Nico in a pivotal moment, and many blamed him for the elimination.
