The X Factor: The Band is a special edition of British reality talent competition The X Factor , which premiered on 9 December 2019 on ITV. The format for the series was announced on 4 November 2019 as a last-minute replacement for a planned All Stars spin-off series, which was originally supposed to air following The X Factor: Celebrity in late 2019. [1] The format is an accelerated version of The X Factor whereby solo artists auditioned in front of Simon Cowell and Nicole Scherzinger to try to win a place in a boyband or girlband. The new bands would then compete for a chance to join Cowell's record label and launch their careers.

Contents

Following closed auditions at Cowell's record label, series 3 winner Leona Lewis joined the judges panel for the live audience auditions and live finale. Industry experts were also on hand to help including producers Naughty Boy and Fred Ball as well as singer Ella Eyre and songwriter Carla Williams. The Band ran over the course of four episodes on 9, 11 and 13 December 2019. The live finale was held at Resorts World Arena on 15 December 2019, where the girlband (RLY) Real Like You beat boyband Unwritten Rule to win a recording contract with Syco Music. Real Like You's winner's single is an original song titled "Be Like Them".

Background

The series was first reported in early 2019 as being The X Factor: All Stars, as the regular series is being put on hiatus due to declining ratings. [2] However, in November 2019, it was announced that the proposed All Stars series had been axed in favour of The X Factor: The Band. The new spin-off saw acts audition to form part of a girl group and boy band. The news came just weeks after former X Factor winners Little Mix announced their own plans for a similar series, Little Mix: The Search , on BBC One in 2020. [3] [4]

The auditions took place at Syco Music headquarters in London, in front of the judges and industry experts. [5] The series aired over four episodes, beginning Monday 9, then Wednesday 11 and Friday 13 December before the live finale on Sunday 15 December which was held at the Resorts World Arena in Birmingham. [6] [5] Speaking on the decision to host the finale in Birmingham, host Dermot O'Leary said "It’s always nice to get out and take the show around the country. We did the final in Manchester a few years ago, which went really well. It’s always nice to get out and see other places and you get a full sense of the whole country being involved as well. I’m looking forward to it!" [7]

Hosts and judges

Dermot O'Leary returned to host the programme. [5] Cowell judged the programme alongside Nicole Scherzinger, who has previously served as a judge on the main version of the programme as well as judging the recently aired celebrity version, [6] and third series winner Leona Lewis. Industry experts and artists will also join the judges as experts, including producer Naughty Boy [5] and singer-songwriter Ella Eyre. [5]

Premiering on 4 September 2004, it was produced by Fremantle's Talkback Thames and Cowell's production company Syco Entertainment for ITV, as well as simulcast on Virgin Media One in Ireland. The programme ran for around 445 episodes across fifteen series, each one primarily broadcast late in the year, until its final episode in December 2018. The majority of episodes were presented by Dermot O'Leary, with some exceptions: the first three series were hosted by Kate Thornton; while Caroline Flack and Olly Murs hosted the show for the twelfth series.

Syco Music, originally S Records, was a division of Syco Entertainment founded by British entrepreneur and record executive Simon Cowell. Founded in 2002, the label launched while Cowell was still employed by BMG, the label oversaw music releases by Robson & Jerome, Five, Westlife and Teletubbies. A year later, BMG, now named Sony BMG, bought Cowell's share in both Syco Music and Syco Television. Later in 2010, Cowell and Sony Music entered a joint venture agreement that would see Cowell and Sony each own 50% of the new Syco Entertainment company which encompassed both the previous Syco TV and Syco Music divisions. The brand had multiple well-known acts signed such as Fifth Harmony, Camila Cabello, One Direction, Little Mix and CNCO. In July 2020, Sony sold the rights to the television formats and assets back to Cowell, effectively divesting all of Syco's non-music divisions. As part of the venture, Syco Music, its current roster and back catalog remains with Sony Music as a wholly owned subsidiary. However, as of September 2020, and according to industry magazine Music Week, the label is now defunct, with staff either leaving or being redeployed elsewhere within the Sony Music group.

Cardle was mentored throughout the show by Dannii Minogue. After the victory, he released his debut single "When We Collide". A total of 15,448,019 votes were cast throughout the series. It was presented by Dermot O'Leary, with spin-off show The Xtra Factor presented by Konnie Huq on ITV2, who took over from Holly Willoughby.

The fifth series of British talent competition programme Britain's Got Talent was broadcast on ITV, from 16 April to 4 June 2011; due to live coverage of the 2011 UEFA Champions League Final on 28 May, the final audition episode of the series was pushed back a day to avoid clashing with it. As Piers Morgan had departed from the programme the previous year, and the schedule of Simon Cowell made him unable to attend auditions, the producers arranged for Amanda Holden to be joined by David Hasselhoff and Michael McIntyre on the judging panel. Due to Hasselhoff's schedule during filming of the auditions, Louis Walsh stepped in as a guest judge for the sessions he could not attend.

The X Factor in the UK has been subject to much controversy and criticism since its launch in 2004. This has included allegations of conflict of interest, voting irregularities and overcharging, product placement for sponsors, staging scenes, use of pitch correction technology, and exploiting vulnerable contestants. The series has also been criticised for developing singers as marketable products rather than creative individuals. As of April 2020, there have been fifteen completed series broadcast on the ITV network, as well as spin-offs The X Factor: Celebrity (2019) and The X Factor: The Band (2019).
