At 06:00 UTC on September 5, the JTWC began to monitor an area of disturbed weather that had formed 446 nmi (513 mi; 826 km) from Legazpi, Philippines. [3] At 18:00 UTC the same day, the JMA declared the system a tropical depression. [4] Later in the day, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert as the system's low-level circulation center and its surrounding convection had improved significantly in organization. [5] At 09:00 UTC the next day, the JTWC upgraded the disturbance to a tropical depression, designating as 19W. [6] At 21:00 UTC, the JTWC upgraded it to a tropical storm; they also noted the formation of an eye-like feature on satellite images. [7] The JMA later did the same at 00:00 UTC of September 7, providing the name Chanthu. [8] At 09:30 UTC, the PAGASA reported that Chanthu entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and was named Kiko. [9] At 12:00 UTC, as satellite based intensity estimates from the Dvorak technique increased, the JMA upgraded Chanthu to a severe tropical storm. [10] At the same moment, Chanthu started rapid intensification as it quickly became a Category 1-equivalent typhoon. Satellite imagery indicate a development of a vertical hot tower over its center, with microwave imagery indicating that it had developed a very small eye feature. [11] [12] At 15:00 UTC, it had become a Category 2-equivalent typhoon, as it continued explosive intensification. A pinhole eye, a typical sign of a rapidly intensifying tropical cyclone, had developed by that time. [13] Six hours later, the typhoon reached Category 4 status, with one-minute sustained wind speeds of 125 kn (230 km/h; 145 mph). [14] By the next day, at 09:00 UTC, Chanthu had reached Category 5-equivalent intensity, developing a 5 nmi (10 km; 5 mi)-wide eye which was by very intense convection, [15] [16] making it the second super typhoon of the year and marking the storm's initial peak intensity.

After reaching its initial peak, Chanthu was downgraded to a Category 4-equivalent super typhoon at 09:00 UTC on September 9, as its highly compact eye started to become cloud-filled, indicating the start of an eyewall replacement cycle. [17] However, shortly after, Chanthu quickly re-intensified into a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon yet again at 09:00 UTC that day, as its eye became clear again. [18] On 05:00 PhST of September 11 (21:00 UTC of September 10), the PAGASA reported that Chanthu passed to the east of the Babuyan Islands; [19] at 08:30 PhST (00:30 UTC), Chanthu made landfall in Ivana, Batanes as a Category 5 super typhoon with 1-minute sustained winds of 270 km/h (165 mph) as the storm began to weaken slightly. [20] [21] At 15:00 UTC on September 11, Chanthu weakened to a Category 4-equivalent typhoon as it continued to move northward because of the presence of dry air. [22] It was further downgraded to a Category 3-equivalent typhoon by the JTWC on September 12 at 03:00 UTC as it moved towards the east coast of Taiwan, experiencing multiple eyewall replacement cycles, increasing wind shear and dry, stable air. [23] Three hours later, the PAGASA issued its last bulletin on the system since it had exited the PAR. [24] At 15:00 UTC, Chanthu weakened to a Category 2-equivalent typhoon as the dry air started to hamper the typhoon's convective structure. According to satellite imagery, the low-level circulation center had become ill-defined and the eye started to collapse. [25] The weakening trend of Chanthu continued as it moved further northward towards the Korean Peninsula because of increasing wind shear, dry air and cool sea surface temperatures. [26] [27] At 09:00 UTC of September 13, Chanthu further weakened into a Category 1 typhoon as it moved further north towards Shanghai. [28] By 15:00 UTC, the eye of Chanthu had completely collapsed. [29] Chanthu remained quasi-stationary near Shanghai because of weak steering flow. [30] [31] At 06:00 UTC the next day, the JMA downgraded Chanthu to a severe tropical storm as it moved southeastward. [32] Three hours later, the JTWC downgraded Chanthu to a tropical storm as its low-level circulation became partially exposed, with convection only remaining to the north and west. [33] At 12:00 UTC, the JMA further downgraded it to a tropical storm as it slowly moved south-eastward towards Japan. [34] At 00:00 UTC on September 15, due to decreasing wind shear and marginally favorable sea surface temperatures, Chanthu re-strengthened and was re-classified as a severe tropical storm that day. [35] After continued slow movement, on September 17 at 09:00 UTC, Chanthu made landfall near itsuki, Nagasaki in Japan. [36] It continued to move northward as it moved through the rugged Japanese islands, causing it to weaken significantly. [37] This caused the JMA to downgrade it to a tropical storm at 12:00 UTC. [38] At 21:00 UTC, the JTWC downgraded it to a tropical depression as it rapidly collapsed because of the rugged terrain; it was also undergoing extratropical transition. [39] On September 18 at 08:00 UTC, the JTWC issued its final warning for the system, as the system became extratropical. [40] Afterward, Chanthu's remnant continued moving eastward and then curved southward, before dissipating on September 20.

Preparations

In the Philippines, 415 people were evacuated. [41] As Chanthu came closer towards Luzon, the PAGASA issued Signal No. 1 warnings over Cagayan and Isabela provinces. [42] At 23:00 PhST of September 9, the PAGASA raised a Signal No. 2 warning over the northeastern portion of Cagayan and eastern portion of Babuyan and Signal No. 1 was further extended over Batanes, rest of Cagayan and Babuyan, northeastern portion of Apayao and eastern portion of Isabela. [43] At 05:00 PhST the next day, a Signal No. 3 warning was raised over Santa Ana, Cagayan. [44]

At 05:30 NST of September 10, the Central Weather Bureau in Taiwan issued a sea warning, [45] which was followed by a land warning for Super Typhoon Chanthu. [46] At 17:00 PhST, the PAGASA raised a Signal No. 4 warning over the northeastern portion of Babuyan Islands. [47] President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen advised people to stay indoors due to torrential rain and strong winds. [41] Transportation in Taiwan was also halted, with over 100 flights, [48] trains and 46 ferries to Matsu and other surrounding islands cancelled. [41] Around 2,000 people in landslide-prone areas in the eastern portions of Hualien County were evacuated, and sections of highway in the area were closed by authorities. The Taiwanese Defence Ministry put 31,000 troops on standby. [48]

The storm shut down both China's Shanghai Port and the Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan, the world's largest port by cargo throughput, between September 12–14. About 86 vessels were left waiting outside the ports. [49]

Philippines

The Batanes Islands suffered a direct hit from Chanthu, which destroyed infrastructure and caused power outages there. Some local residents called it "the strongest typhoon" they had seen. [50] More than 30,000 residents were affected in the Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon and the Cordillera Administrative Region. Four municipalities lost power, and one municipality experienced a water supply outage; those services were not restored as of September 15. There were also reports of landslides and flooding, mostly from Ilocos and Central Luzon. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), total damages from the typhoon were up to 37.4 million (US$748,000). [51]

Taiwan

The eastern portions of Hualien and Taitung counties received around 200 mm (7.9 in) of rain from the typhoon. The storm brought waves of up to 7 m (23 ft) on Orchid Island. Authorities reported that 26,000 houses lost power. [52] The capital city of Taiwan, Taipei, also received heavy rainfall. Winds up to 164 km/h (102 mph) were reported. [53]

South Korea

As Chanthu passed near the island of Jeju, it caused winds up to 30 to 40 m/s (110 to 145 km/h; 65 to 90 mph) and 50 mm (2.0 in) of rainfall. There were reports of structural damage and overwhelmed drainage systems on the island. 23 flights were grounded and 48 ferry sailings were cancelled. [54]

Japan

Chanthu left seven people injured across Japan while it traversed the country as a weakening system. Train services were suspended and flights cancelled as a result of adverse weather. Over 7,000 households on Kyushu lost power. In Mihama, Wakayama, strong winds damaged the roofs of 50 houses and shattered several windows. [55]

Khanun was also the first tropical storm to make a landfall over Korea in 2012. Khanun means "jack fruit" in Thai.

The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2017, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the fifth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator between 100°E and the International Date Line. This area, called the Western Pacific basin, is the responsibility of the Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA). They host and operate the Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC), located in Tokyo. Typhoon Meranti, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Ferdie, was one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record. Impacting the Batanes in the Philippines, Taiwan, as well as Fujian Province in September 2016, Meranti formed as a tropical depression on September 8 near the island of Guam. Tracking to the west northwest, Meranti gradually intensified until September 11, at which point it began a period of rapid intensification. Continuing to rapidly intensify, it became a super typhoon early on September 12, as it passed through the Luzon Strait, ultimately reaching its peak intensity on September 13 with 1-minute sustained winds of 315 km/h (195 mph). Shortly afterwards, it passed directly over the island of Itbayat. Meranti passed to the south of Taiwan as a super typhoon, and began weakening steadily as a result of land interaction. By September 15, it struck Fujian Province as a Category 2-equivalent typhoon, becoming the strongest typhoon on record to impact the province. Upon moving inland, rapid weakening ensued and Meranti became extratropical the next day, dissipating shortly afterwards after it passed to the south of the Korean Peninsula.

Typhoon Haima, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Lawin, was the third most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2016. It was the twenty-second named storm and the eleventh typhoon of the annual typhoon season. Impacting the Philippines less than 3 days after Typhoon Sarika, Haima formed out of a tropical disturbance southwest of Chuuk on October 14, it developed into a tropical storm the next day. Steady strengthening occurred over the next day or two as it tracked westward towards the Philippines. After forming an eye shortly after it was upgraded to a typhoon, Haima began to rapidly strengthen and eventually became a super typhoon on October 18. It later attained its peak intensity as a Category 5-equivalent tropical cyclone before weakening slightly. Haima later made landfall late on October 19 as a Category 4-equivalent storm. Rapid weakening occurred as it interacted with the landmasses until it entered the Southern China Sea as a weak typhoon. It formed a large ragged eye once again and remained steady in intensity until making landfall in China on October 21. It weakened below typhoon intensity and became extratropical on October 22. The cyclone drifted northeastwards and later eastwards before emerging over water again, but eventually dissipated by October 26.

Typhoon Nock-ten, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Nina, was the strongest Christmas Day tropical cyclone worldwide in terms of 1-minute sustained winds. Forming as a tropical depression southeast of Yap and strengthening into the twenty-sixth tropical storm of the annual typhoon season on December 21, 2016, Nock-ten intensified into the thirteenth typhoon of the season on December 23. Soon afterwards, the system underwent explosive intensification and became a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon early on December 25. Nock-ten weakened shortly afterwards before making eight landfalls over the Philippines. The typhoon weakened rapidly due to the landfalls as it entered the South China Sea on December 26, turned southwest, and ultimately dissipated on December 28 due to the winter monsoon.

Typhoon Lan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Paolo, was the third-most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2017. A very large storm, Lan was the twenty-first tropical storm and ninth typhoon of the annual typhoon season. It originated from a tropical disturbance that the United States Naval Research Laboratory had begun tracking near Chuuk on October 11. Slowly consolidating, it developed into a tropical storm on October 15, and intensified into a typhoon on October 17. It expanded in size and turned northward on October 18, although the typhoon struggled to intensify for two days. On October 20, Lan grew into a very large typhoon and rapidly intensified, due to favorable conditions, with a large well-defined eye, reaching peak intensity as a "super typhoon" with 1-minute sustained winds of 249 km/h (155 mph) – a high-end Category 4-equivalent storm – late on the same day. Afterward, encroaching dry air and shear caused the cyclone to begin weakening and turn extratropical, before it struck Japan on October 23 as a weaker typhoon. Later that day, it became fully extratropical before it was absorbed by a larger storm shortly afterward.

The 2021 Pacific typhoon season was the second consecutive to have below-average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-two named storms, and was the least active since 2011. Nine became typhoons, and five of those intensified into super typhoons. This low activity was caused by a strong La Niña that had persisted from the previous year. The season's first named storm, Dujuan, developed on February 16, while the last named storm, Rai, dissipated on December 21. The season's first typhoon, Surigae, reached typhoon status on April 16. It became the first super typhoon of the year on the next day, also becoming the strongest tropical cyclone in 2021. Surigae was also the most powerful tropical cyclone on record in the Northern Hemisphere for the month of April. Typhoons In-fa and Rai are responsible for more than half of the total damage this season, adding up to a combined total of $2.02 billion.

The 2023 Pacific typhoon season is an ongoing event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season runs throughout 2023, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Sanvu, developed on April 21. The following month, Mawar, intensified into the first typhoon of the season on May 21, becoming one of the strongest Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclones on record in May, and the second-strongest early-season tropical cyclone, behind only Surigae in April 2021. An exceptionally notable storm was Typhoon Doksuri in mid-late July, which devastated the northern Philippines, Taiwan and China, causing $15.4 billion in damage, as well as becoming the costliest typhoon to hit Mainland China.

Severe Tropical Storm Usagi, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Samuel, was a tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines and Southern Vietnam in late November 2018, causing severe damage around the Visayas region and Ho Chi Minh City. The storm formed from a disturbance in the Central Pacific basin on November 3, but did not develop into a tropical storm until almost three weeks later, on November 13. Usagi underwent rapid intensification and peaked in intensity before making its final landfall on Vũng Tàu, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province as a weakening tropical storm on November 25. While never considered as a typhoon by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) assessed its intensity to be equivalent to Category 2 status on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Usagi caused one death and ₱52.2 million (US$992,000) in damages in the Philippines, most of which came from agriculture. Usagi caused 3 deaths and ₫925 billion in damages in Vietnam.

Typhoon Prapiroon, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Florita, was a Category 1 typhoon that worsened the floods in Japan and also caused impacts in neighboring South Korea. The storm formed from an area of low pressure near the Philippines, and strengthened to a typhoon before entering the Sea of Japan. Prapiroon was the seventh named tropical cyclone and the first typhoon of the annual annual typhoon season. While Florita was the sixth named tropical cyclone by PAGASA.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Barijat</span> Pacific tropical storm in 2018

Tropical Storm Barijat, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Neneng, was a weak tropical storm that caused flooding in the far northern regions of the Philippines and Southern China. The thirty-third tropical depression and twenty-third tropical storm of the 2018 Pacific typhoon season, it was first noted as an area of convection in the South China Sea on September 6. On September 8, it was upgraded to a tropical depression, and by September 11, it intensified into a tropical storm, with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) giving it the name Barijat. Barijat peaked in intensity 6 hours later, with 10-min winds of 40 knots and 1-min winds of 45 knots. Barijat continued westward, and on November 12 at 00:30 UTC, it made landfall over Zhanjiang, quickly dissipating afterwards.

Severe Tropical Storm Maliksi, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Domeng, was a tropical cyclone in June 2018 that brought rainfall to the Philippines and Japan. It caused 2 deaths and prompted the PAGASA to declare the beginning of the rainy season in the Philippines. The fifth named storm and 4th tropical cyclone in the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), it was first noted as an area of convection in the South of Palau on May 31.

Severe Tropical Storm Conson, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Jolina, was a strong tropical cyclone that impacted the central Philippines and Vietnam during the 2021 Pacific typhoon season. Being the thirteenth named storm of the said event, Conson originated as a low-pressure area first monitored approximately 500 km (310 mi) west of Guam. It formed as a tropical depression over the Pacific Ocean on September 5, 2021. As it formed within the Philippine Area of Responsibility, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) named the storm Jolina. Over the next day, it intensified into a tropical storm and was named Conson by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). As the storm neared Samar Island, it intensified into a severe tropical storm, and later into a typhoon according to the PAGASA prior to its first landfall in Eastern Samar. The storm retained its strength as it crossed Visayas and later Calabarzon before weakening over Manila Bay prior to its final landfall in Bataan. It subsequently emerged into the South China Sea where it struggled to reintensify further. It then weakened into a tropical depression just offshore of Vietnam before moving ashore near Da Nang. It then rapidly weakened before dissipating on September 13.

Typhoon Muifa, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Inday, was a powerful tropical cyclone that affected East China, Taiwan, and the Ryukyu Islands in mid-September 2022. It was the twelfth named storm and fourth typhoon of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season, having originated from an invest in the Pacific Ocean.
