Severe Tropical Storm Conson,known in the Philippines as Typhoon Jolina,was a strong tropical cyclone that impacted the central Philippines and Vietnam during the 2021 Pacific typhoon season. Being the thirteenth named storm of the said event,Conson originated as a low-pressure area first monitored approximately 500 km (310 mi) west of Guam. It formed as a tropical depression over the Pacific Ocean on September 5,2021. As it formed within the Philippine Area of Responsibility,the Philippine Atmospheric,Geophysical,and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) named the storm Jolina. Over the next day,it intensified into a tropical storm and was named Conson by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). As the storm neared Samar Island,it intensified into a severe tropical storm,and later into a typhoon according to the PAGASA prior to its first landfall in Eastern Samar. The storm retained its strength as it crossed Visayas and later Calabarzon before weakening over Manila Bay prior to its final landfall in Bataan. It subsequently emerged into the South China Sea where it struggled to reintensify further. It then weakened into a tropical depression just offshore of Vietnam before moving ashore near Da Nang. It then rapidly weakened before dissipating on September 13.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Philippines reported 23 deaths,32 injuries and 2 missing individuals. Agricultural and infrastructural damages in the country were estimated at ₱5.17 billion (US$88.3 million).
At 06:00 UTC of September 5, the United States Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) [nb 1] started to monitor a tropical disturbance in the Philippine Sea, located about 446 nmi (513 mi; 826 km) to the east-southeast of Legazpi, Albay. At that time, multispectral animated satellite imagery revealed a low-level circulation center with cloud lines circling along the feature. The system was also in an area conducive for further development, with poleward outflow, favorable wind shear, and 30 °C (86 °F) sea surface temperatures. [2] Over the next few hours, it gained organization as it remained stationary. [3] [4] At 18:00 UTC that day, the Japan Meteorological Agency [nb 2] upgraded the system to a tropical depression, followed simultaneously with the PAGASA's designation of the storm as Tropical Depression Jolina as it was under the agency's area of responsibility. This made the storm the tenth tropical cyclone in the region for the season. [6] [7] Meanwhile, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert (TCFA) at 23:30 UTC as a circulation was now evident along the system and an organizing convective band to its south-southeast. [8]
The same agency further upgraded the storm to a tropical depression on the next day as it further consolidated, with a persistent area of thunderstorms over an obscured low level circulation center (LLCC). [9] [10] Moving northwestward under the periphery of a subtropical ridge to the northeast, its organization continued to improve with an eye feature developing and at 06:00 UTC that day, the depression strengthened to a tropical storm according to the estimates of JMA and PAGASA, with the former naming it Conson. The JTWC did the same, three hours later. [11] [12] [13] At 09:00 UTC (17:00 PHT), the PAGASA reported that the system further intensified to a severe tropical storm while nearing Samar Island. [14] [15] Over the next hours, its convection further expanded to the east from the southeast and as a result the JMA upgraded the system as well, two hours later. [16] [17] It subsequently intensified to a typhoon, prior to landfall over Hernani, Eastern Samar at 13:00 UTC (22:00 PHT). [18] Conson then traversed Visayas, making additional landfalls in Daram, Santo Niño, Almagro, and Tagapul-an in Samar. [19] The system continued consolidating while over Samar which allowed it to form a small microwave eye. [20]
The following day, it made another landfall in Dimasalang, Masbate (2:00 UTC). [19] Land interaction while the storm was above Masbate slightly weakened Conson as its LLCC became ragged. [21] [22] Traversing the Sibuyan Sea allowed Conson to briefly form a well-defined radar eye while maintaining strength. [23] [24] The system then made another landfall in Torrijos, Marinduque. On September 8, the storm made another landfall in San Juan, Batangas. [19] Despite interaction with land in South Luzon, the system maintained strength while traversing Calabarzon. [25] [26] It then weakened as its LLCC became disorganized over Manila Bay, with the PAGASA downgrading it into a tropical storm. [27] Conson made its last landfall in the Philippines in Mariveles, Bataan at 09:00 UTC (17:00 PHT). [28] It later strengthened to a severe tropical storm once again at 12:00 UTC before emerging into the South China Sea, about three hours later. [29] [30]
The system proceeded to track westward, struggling to consolidate further. [31] Conson retained its strength under a marginally favorable environment with moderate vertical wind shear and warm sea surface temperatures that persisted over the South China Sea the following day. [32] [33] As it continued tracking westward on September 10, however, high vertical wind shear exposed its LLCC, weakening the storm. [34] Conson later regained some of its strength as it organized and regained a defined LLCC in the early hours of September 11, however this was short-lived as it had later become exposed again due to wind shear. As a result of this, the JMA downgraded the system to a tropical storm at 12:00 UTC on that day and further, with the JTWC reporting that Conson further degraded to a tropical depression at 18:00 UTC and 02:00 UTC that day and on September 12. [35] [36] [37] Remaining weak and exposed, the storm stalled near Quảng Ngãi Province in south-central Vietnam under a weak steering pattern of three ridges. At 21:00 UTC, the JTWC issued its final bulletin on the storm, indicating that Conson already made landfall near Da Nang and it rapidly weakened overland. [38] [39] [40] Meanwhile, the JMA tracked the system until it fully dissipated on September 13 at 18:00 UTC. [41]
Upon the system's designation as a tropical depression, the PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signals for Eastern Visayas and the extreme tip of Mindanao as well as the Bicol Region and some areas of Calabarzon and Mimaropa. [42] [43] [44] As the system developed into a typhoon, portions of Samar and Eastern Samar were placed under Signal #3. [45]
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) suspended sea trips in the northern tip of Mindanao as early as September 6. [46] The PCG also suspended trips in Eastern Samar, Capiz, Negros Occidental, and the Bicol Region on September 7. [47] [48] [49] 2,500 passengers were stranded in sea ports around Luzon and Visayas by evening. [50] Flights from Manila to Tacloban and Legazpi Airport (and vice versa) were cancelled on September 7 due to inclement weather. [51] [52] On September 8, flights from Manila to Davao, Puerto Princesa, Singapore, Abu Dhabi and Taipei (and vice versa) were also cancelled, along with flights from Japan and Guam to Manila (and vice-versa). [53]
Before and during the storm, classes were suspended in 313 municipalities and work was suspended in 320 municipalities. [54] Classes in all levels for September 7 were suspended in the entire island of Samar including Catbalogan, the entire province of Albay, and in the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc in Leyte. [55] Classes in all levels for September 8 were suspended in the entire provinces of Cavite, Quezon and Laguna. Including in the cities of Antipolo, San Juan, Taguig. Government work was also suspended in Laguna and Quezon. Ateneo de Manila University and University of Santo Tomas also suspended classes for September 8. [56] Preemptive evacuations began in the lower Bicol Region by September 7. [57] Manila and Quezon City began evacuating families on September 8. [58] [59] A total of 11,062 individuals were preemptively evacuated. [54]
Due to Conson's approach in the country, over 500,000 soldiers were released and put on standby as its government prepared emergency plans to ride out the storm. Many ships and vessels were also instructed to stay on ports. Health Ministry Tuoi Tre claimed that individuals living in areas that are under coronavirus lockdowns had to be evacuated to safer places and health regulations had to be enforced. 100 to 200 millimeters with isolated 250 millimeters of rain were forecasted for the country. [60] [61] [62] [63] Roofs of houses in Liên Chiểu District, Da Nang were secured as a precaution while boats on Thọ Quang were moved onshore. [64] Phước Sơn, Quảng Nam also delivered 14 tons of rice to Phước Kim , Phuoc Thanh and Phuoc Loc to prevent traffic. [65] Classes across the province were also canceled and 14 families on Hội An were moved to evacuation shelters due to the storm. [66] [67] Four reservoirs in Hà Tĩnh also released their waters as a safety procedure and the Mekong River's water level were seen to increase due to the storm. [68] [69]
Conson caused widespread impacts in Luzon and Visayas. Flooding was reported in the regions of Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Central Visayas and Eastern Visayas. [57] Rough seas also prevailed during Conson's approach to the country. [70] By April 4, 2022, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in the Philippines reported 23 deaths, 32 injuries and 2 missing individuals. 465,973 persons were affected by the storm — 294,777 of which were from Eastern Visayas. [71]
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported floods in Manila, Navotas, Mandaluyong, Masbate, Tacloban and Malabon. [72] [73] [74] In Miagao, Iloilo, flash floods destroyed 241 hectares of rice after major rivers in the town overflowed. [56] Rains from Conson also submerged rice fields in Libertad, Antique and destroyed a spillway in San Francisco, Quezon. [75] [76] Water levels in the Ipo Dam reached its spilling level of 101 meters due to the heavy rain, alerting areas near the Angat River of possible flooding. [77] Bustos Dam and Angat Dam, both also impounding Angat River, neared their spilling levels in the morning of September 8. [78]
The Philippine Coast Guard, Philippine National Police and Ormoc City authorities rescued individuals trapped in floodwaters in the area starting on the night of September 6 until the next morning. [79] A fishing boat capsized in Hamtic, Antique as it was swept out of the sea by the storm, injuring one of the crew members. [80] Another boat capsized in Cataingan, where six fishermen had to be rescued. 50 fishermen from the provinces of Leyte and Samar were rescued as strong waves hit various vessels in Eastern Visayas. [81] [82] Conson left 10 dead and 9 missing in Eastern Visayas. [83] [81] A fishing boat capsized in Catbalogan, killing one crew member. The seven other crew members were later rescued. [81] A vessel sank in Marinduque, leading to one person drowning. [82] A man fell into a river in Placer, Masbate, and was later found dead. [84] In addition, a resort worker in Batangas was killed in a landslide. [85] Nine individuals were injured while one was reported missing in Eastern Samar. [86] Another two were injured in Atimonan when a cargo truck fell into a ravine after the vehicle lost control. [87]
A total of 21,642 houses were damaged in various regions around the country — of which the majority were only partially affected. [71] The Office of Civil Defense in Bicol reported at least ₱13.7 million in damages to fishing boats and equipment. [88] Five transmission lines in Eastern Visayas failed, affecting 286,243 power consumers and causing blackouts in Tacloban, as well as the entire provinces of Samar and Eastern Samar. [89] An estimated 29,503.37 ha (72,904.4 acres) of crop area was affected by the storm, with total agricultural costs of up to ₱3.21 billion. Infrastructural damages are estimated at ₱1.95 billion for a grand total of ₱5.17 billion (US$88.3 million) in overall damages. [71]
Although Conson rapidly weakened before making landfall on the Vietnamese coast, the storm and its rainbands still produced heavy rainfall and winds. Bình Tân (Quảng Ngãi) recorded a whopping 910 mm (36 in) of rain. Two people were killed by flooding. [90] Another 23 ship crews from 3 vessels were also killed, in the waters off of Bach Long Vy island and Ha Tinh. [91] Agriculture damages on the island of Lý Sơn is estimated to be about one hundred billion VND ($3.9 million). [92]
After the season, PAGASA announced that the name Jolina will be removed from their naming lists, after the typhoon caused more than ₱1 billion in damages on its onslaught in the country. On March 21, 2022, the PAGASA chose the name Jacinto as its replacement for the 2025 season. [93] [94]
In early 2023, the Typhoon Committee announced that the name Conson, along with two others will be removed from the naming lists. [95] In the spring of 2024, the name was replaced with Luc-binh; it is a Vietnamese name for water hyacinth (Eichhornia). [96]
Typhoon Xangsane, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Milenyo, was a typhoon that affected the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand during the 2006 Pacific typhoon season. The name Xangsane was submitted by Laos and means elephant.
The 2012 Pacific typhoon season was a slightly above average season that produced 25 named storms, fourteen typhoons, and four intense typhoons. It was a destructive and the second consecutive year to be the deadliest season, primarily due to Typhoon Bopha which killed 1,901 people in the Philippines. It was an event in the annual cycle of tropical cyclone formation, in which tropical cyclones form in the western Pacific Ocean. The season ran throughout 2012, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Pakhar, developed on March 28, while the season's last named storm, Wukong, dissipated on December 29. The season's first typhoon, Guchol, reached typhoon status on June 15, and became the first super typhoon of the year on June 17.
The 2016 Pacific typhoon season is considered to have been the fourth-latest start for a Pacific typhoon season since reliable records began. It was an average season, with a total of 26 named storms, 13 typhoons, and six super typhoons. The season ran throughout 2016, though typically most tropical cyclones develop between May and October. The season's first named storm, Nepartak, developed on July 3, while the season's last named storm, Nock-ten, dissipated on December 28.
The 2020 Pacific typhoon season was the first of an ongoing series of below average Pacific typhoon seasons, and became the first with below-average tropical cyclone activity since 2014, with 23 named storms, 10 of which became typhoons and only 2 became super typhoons. This low activity was a consequence of La Niña that persisted from the summer of the year. It had the sixth-latest start in the basin on record, slightly behind 1973, and was the first to start that late since 2016. The first half of the season was unusually inactive, with only four systems, two named storms and one typhoon at the end of July. Additionally, the JTWC recorded no tropical cyclone development in the month of July, the first such occurrence since reliable records began. Despite that, this season featured Super Typhoon Goni, which made the strongest landfall worldwide in terms of 1-minute wind speed. The season's first named tropical cyclone, Vongfong, developed on May 8, while the season's last named tropical cyclone, Krovanh, dissipated on December 24. However, the season's last system was an unnamed tropical depression which dissipated on December 29.
Severe Tropical Storm Rumbia, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Gorio, was a tropical cyclone that brought widespread flooding in areas of the Philippines and China late June and early July 2013. The sixth internationally named storm of the season, Rumbia formed from a broad area of low pressure situated in the southern Philippine Sea on June 27. Steadily organizing, the initial tropical depression moved towards the northwest as the result of a nearby subtropical ridge. On June 28, the disturbance strengthened to tropical storm strength, and subsequently made its first landfall on Eastern Samar in the Philippines early the following day. Rumbia spent roughly a day moving across the archipelago before emerging into the South China Sea. Over open waters, Rumbia resumed strengthening, and reached its peak intensity with winds of 95 km/h (50 mph) on July 1, ranking it as a severe tropical storm. The tropical cyclone weakened slightly before moving ashore the Leizhou Peninsula late that day. Due to land interaction, Rumbia quickly weakened into a low pressure area on July 2 and eventually dissipated soon afterwards.
Typhoon Hagupit known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Ruby, was the second most intense tropical cyclone in 2014. Hagupit particularly impacted the Philippines in early December while gradually weakening, killing 18 people and causing $114 million of damage in the country. Prior to making landfall, Hagupit was considered the worst threat to the Philippines in 2014, but it was significantly smaller than 2013's Typhoon Haiyan.
Typhoon Melor, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Nona, was a powerful tropical cyclone that struck the Philippines in December 2015. The twenty-seventh named storm and the eighteenth typhoon of the annual typhoon season, Melor killed 51 people and caused ₱7.04 billion in damage.
Typhoon Damrey, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Ramil, was a strong tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines and Vietnam during early November 2017. Damrey first originated as a tropical depression over the Philippine archipelago of Visayas on October 31. Emerging into the South China Sea a few days later, the system strengthened into the second deadliest and twenty-third named storm of the 2017 Pacific typhoon season. Rapidly intensifying, Damrey became the season's tenth typhoon on November 3, reaching its peak intensity as a Category 2 on the same day. Damrey made landfall over Khánh Hoà, Vietnam on November 4 and began to rapidly weaken, fully dissipating on November 5.
Tropical Storm Kai-tak, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Urduja, was a late-season tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines during December 2017. The twenty-sixth named storm of the 2017 Pacific typhoon season, Kai-tak started as a tropical depression near Palau on December 11. Slowly intensifying, the system became a tropical storm on December 14. Due to its slow motion, Kai-tak made landfall in Samar on December 16 and traversed the Philippine Islands. Kai-tak later moved in a west-southwestward direction until it dissipated on December 23 near Malaysia.
The 2021 Pacific typhoon season was the second consecutive to have below average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-two named storms, and was the least active since 2011. Nine became typhoons, and five of those intensified into super typhoons. This low activity was caused by a strong La Niña that had persisted from the previous year. The season's first named storm, Dujuan, developed on February 16, while the last named storm, Rai, dissipated on December 21. The season's first typhoon, Surigae, reached typhoon status on April 16. It became the first super typhoon of the year on the next day, also becoming the strongest tropical cyclone in 2021. Surigae was also the most powerful tropical cyclone on record in the Northern Hemisphere for the month of April. Typhoons In-fa and Rai are responsible for more than half of the total damage this season, adding up to a combined total of $2.02 billion.
The 2022 Pacific typhoon season was the third consecutive season to have below average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-five named storms forming. Of the tropical storms, ten became typhoons, and three would intensify into super typhoons. The season saw near-average activity by named storm count, although many of the storms were weak and short-lived, particularly towards the end of the season. This low activity was caused by an unusually strong La Niña that had persisted from 2020. The season's first named storm, Malakas, developed on April 6, while the last named storm, Pakhar, dissipated on December 12. The season's first typhoon, Malakas, reached typhoon status on April 12. The season ran throughout 2022, though most tropical cyclones typically develop between May and October. Tropical storms Megi and Nalgae were responsible for more than half of the casualties, while typhoons Hinnamnor and Nanmadol both caused $1 billion in damages.
Typhoon Vongfong, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ambo, was a strong tropical cyclone that impacted the Philippines in May 2020. Beginning as a tropical depression on May 10 east of Mindanao, Vongfong was the first storm of the 2020 Pacific typhoon season. It gradually organized as it took a slow northward course, strengthening into a tropical storm on May 12 and curving west thereafter. The next day, Vongfong entered a period of rapid intensification, becoming a typhoon and attaining 10-minute maximum sustained winds of 150 km/h (93 mph). The storm made landfall at this intensity near San Policarpo, Eastern Samar, at 04:15 UTC on May 14. The system tracked across Visayas and Luzon, making a total of seven landfalls. Persistent land interaction weakened Vongfong, leading to its degeneration into a tropical depression over the Luzon Strait on May 17.
Severe Tropical Storm Usagi, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Samuel, was a tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines and Southern Vietnam in late November 2018, causing severe damage around the Visayas region and Ho Chi Minh City. The storm formed from a disturbance in the Central Pacific basin on November 3, but did not develop into a tropical storm until almost three weeks later, on November 13. Usagi underwent rapid intensification and peaked in intensity before making its final landfall on Vũng Tàu, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province as a weakening tropical storm on November 25. While never considered as a typhoon by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) assessed its intensity to be equivalent to Category 2 status on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Usagi caused one death and ₱52.2 million (US$992,000) in damages in the Philippines, most of which came from agriculture. Usagi caused 3 deaths and ₫925 billion in damages in Vietnam.
Typhoon Surigae, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Bising, was the strongest Northern Hemisphere tropical cyclone to form before the month of May, one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record and the strongest tropical cyclone worldwide in 2021. The second named storm, first typhoon and first super typhoon of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Surigae originated from a low-pressure area south of the Micronesian island of Woleai that organized into a tropical depression on April 12. At 18:00 UTC that day, it strengthened to a tropical storm and was named Surigae by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The formation of an eye and increasing winds prompted the JMA to upgrade the system to a severe tropical storm on April 13. The storm continued to gradually strengthen, and late on April 15, Surigae became a typhoon. Very favorable environmental conditions then allowed Surigae to begin a bout of rapid intensification; Surigae became a super typhoon the next day, and by April 17, the storm reached its peak intensity, with 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph), 1-minute sustained winds of 315 km/h (196 mph), and a minimum pressure of 895 hPa (26.4 inHg). This made it the strongest pre-May typhoon on record. Afterward, the storm's weakening outflow and an eyewall replacement cycle caused Surigae to gradually weaken as its track shifted north-northwestward in the Philippine Sea. Following the eyewall replacement cycle, Surigae became an annular tropical cyclone on April 19, and restrengthened slightly. On April 22, the storm began to rapidly weaken as it accelerated northwestward into unfavorable environmental conditions, transitioning into a subtropical storm the next day. The subtropical system subsequently underwent extratropical transition, which it completed by April 24. Afterward, Surigae's extratropical remnant accelerated northeastward. On April 27, Surigae's remnant explosively intensified into a bomb cyclone near the Aleutian Islands, attaining hurricane-force winds. Afterward, the system gradually weakened as it turned eastward, slowing down in the process, before crossing the International Date Line on April 30 and fully dissipating on May 2.
Typhoon Noru, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Karding, was an intense and destructive tropical cyclone that affected Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines — where it caused widespread agricultural damage. Noru, which means Roe deer in Korean, the sixteenth named storm and eighth typhoon, and third super typhoon of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season, Noru originated from a disturbance over the Philippine Sea, slowly tracking eastward until its development into a tropical depression, where it began to move westward.
Typhoon Chanthu, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Kiko, was the second most intense tropical cyclone worldwide in 2021 after Typhoon Surigae in April. It impacted the Cagayan Valley region of the Philippines and became the strongest typhoon to affect the Batanes province since Typhoon Meranti in 2016. The twenty-ninth tropical depression, fourteenth named storm and fourth typhoon of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Chanthu originated from a disturbance well east of the Philippine islands on September 5 which organized into a tropical depression later that day. By the next day, the depression had formed into a mature tropical storm which began to explosively intensify by September 7, featuring a pinhole eye on satellite, characteristic of rapidly intensifying storms. Chanthu became a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon by September 8, the highest category on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Subsequent eyewall replacement cycles caused intensity fluctuations, but on September 10, Chanthu peaked with 1-minute sustained winds of 285 km/h (180 mph) just northeast of extreme northeastern Luzon. The typhoon passed very near the Babuyan Islands before passing directly over Ivana, Batanes as a weakening but still powerful Category 5-equivalent super typhoon. Chanthu continued steadily weakening as it passed just east of Taiwan and eventually stalled just east of Shanghai, China. The storm eventually made its second and final landfall near Ikitsuki, Nagasaki in Japan, before crossing the country's mountainous terrain and becoming an extratropical cyclone on September 18. Chanthu then continued eastward and curved southward, before dissipating on September 20. According to Aon Benfield, economic losses totaled US$30 million.
Severe Tropical Storm Kompasu, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Maring was a very large and deadly tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines, Taiwan, and southeast China. Part of the 2021 Pacific typhoon season, Kompasu originated from an area of low pressure east of the Philippines on 6 October 2021. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) classified it as a tropical depression that day. A day later, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) classified it as a tropical depression, naming it Maring. The cyclone was initially heavily disorganised, competing with another vortex, Tropical Depression Nando. Eventually, Maring became dominant, and the JMA reclassified it as a tropical storm, naming it Kompasu. Kompasu made landfall in Cagayan, Philippines, on 11 October 2021, and two days later, the storm made landfall in Hainan, China. The cyclone dissipated on 14 October 2021 while located over Vietnam.
Typhoon Rai, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Odette, was a deadly and extremely destructive super typhoon, which was the second costliest typhoon in Philippine history behind Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Rai was a powerful rare tropical cyclone that struck the Philippines in December 2021. Rai became the first Category 5-equivalent super typhoon to develop in the month of December since Nock-ten in 2016, and the third of four Category 5 super typhoons recorded in the South China Sea, along with Pamela in 1954, Rammasun in 2014 and Yagi in 2024.
Tropical Storm Megi, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Agaton, was a weak but deadly tropical cyclone that impacted the Philippines in April 2022. It was the third tropical depression, and the second tropical storm of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season. Megi originated from an area of convection in the Philippine Sea where it slowly tracked northwestward into Leyte Gulf, where it remained almost stationary, slowly tracking to the east. Megi made two landfalls, one in Calicoan Island in Guiuan, and another in Basey, Samar. It continued to track southwestward and reentered the Philippine Sea before dissipating.
Severe Tropical Storm Ma-on, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Florita, was a tropical cyclone that impacted the Philippines in August 2022. The ninth named storm of the 2022 Pacific typhoon season, Ma-on originated as a disturbance over in the Pacific Ocean on August 18, and was upgraded to a tropical depression during the next day. The depression strengthened into a tropical storm receiving the name Ma-on, and became a severe tropical storm late on August 23 before making landfall in the Philippines. It would later make landfall in China and Vietnam on August 25. Ma-on weakened back to a tropical depression and due to unfavorable conditions it dissipated on August 26, 2022.
