The monsoon trough spawned a tropical disturbance over the western Pacific Ocean to the east of Guam around October 7. The system moved steadily westward, organizing enough for the American-based Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) to issue a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert early on October 9. After the disturbance passed south of Guam, the JTWC began issuing advisories on Tropical Depression 18W late on October 9, [1] and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) followed suit the next day. [2] While passing north of Yap in the Caroline Islands, the depression intensified into a tropical storm according to the JTWC, which gave it the name Zeb. [1] The JMA again was delayed in upgrading by a day. [2]

After becoming a tropical storm, Zeb proceeded to steadily intensify. Its large inflow spawned a circulation well to the east-northeast, which organized into a separate tropical storm Alex. [1] Early on October 11, the storm entered the area of responsibility of PAGASA the Philippine-based weather agency which gave it the local name Iliang. [3] Late on October 11, the JTWC upgraded Zeb to typhoon status, or one-minute winds of at least 120 km/h (75 mph). [1] This was based on the appearance of a banding-type eye on satellite imagery. [4] On October 12, the storm rapidly intensified as it turned more to the west-northwest toward the Philippines. During this time, it caused increased wind shear over the smaller Tropical Storm Alex to the east-northeast, ultimately absorbing it. At 00:00  UTC on October 13, the JTWC upgraded Zeb to super typhoon status, estimating winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), marking that Zeb attained Category 5 status on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Twelve hours later, the agency estimated that the typhoon strengthened further to a peak of 285 km/h (180 mph), making it the strongest storm of the season. [1] At the same time, PAGASA also estimated peak 10-minute winds of 240 km/h (150 mph), also designating Zeb as a super typhoon. [5] Late on October 13, the JMA estimated peak 10-minute winds of 205 km/h (127 mph) just east of the island of Luzon. [2] While near peak intensity, the JTWC estimated that winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) extended 95 kilometres (59 miles), and gales extended 465 km (289 mi) from the center. [4]

Zeb's eyewall continued to contract up until it moved ashore. [6] Early on October 14, Zeb made landfall on eastern Luzon just south of Palanan Bay, or east of Ilagan, near peak intensity. The typhoon weakened rapidly over land, while its track shifted more to the north around a ridge to the east. [1] [4] It emerged into the Luzon Strait between the eponymous island and Taiwan with a much larger eyewall, [6] and failed to re-intensify over open waters. Late on October 15, Zeb passed within 19 km (12 mi) of Taiwan's east coast before accelerating to the northeast due to a passing trough. [1] [4] The JMA downgraded the typhoon to tropical storm status on October 16, [2] although the JTWC retained Zeb at typhoon status. [1] Favorable upper-level conditions allowed the storm to briefly re-intensify after passing Taiwan, although this was short-lived, and it weakened while accelerating toward Japan. [4] At 07:00 UTC on October 17, Zeb struck southern Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture. It continued northeastward through the country, striking Kōchi Prefecture on Shikoku and later crossing central Honshu as a tropical storm. [2] During this time, the storm was losing tropical characteristics as it swiftly entered the Sea of Japan. [1] At 00:00 UTC on October 18, the JMA declared Zeb extratropical, and shortly after the storm moved over northern Hokkaido and into the Sea of Okhotsk. The remnants moved across the southern Kamchatka Peninsula and continued eastward through the open north Pacific. It was last noted by the JMA early on October 20. [2]

Preparations

Ahead of the storm, PAGASA issued Public Storm Warning Signal #4, in which winds of over 185 km/h (115 mph) were expected within 12 hours. [5] The warning covered Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, and northern Aurora. Lesser warnings were issued as far south as the Visayas, [7] and extended into the Metro Manila area. [8] After two damaging storms in September, the government began making widespread preparations on October 13, organizing efforts through its National Disaster Coordinating Council. [9] Ports were closed and flights were canceled due to the storm. [10] Before the worst of the storm struck, power companies shut off electricity to prevent accidents. [11] About 103,000 people evacuated their homes, [12] including over 6,325 staying in 114 government shelters. [13] Evacuations extended as far south as Camarines Sur. [8]

The Hong Kong Observatory issued a stand-by warning signal #1 due to the storm's proximity to the South China Sea. [14]

Before Zeb brushed the east coast of Taiwan, a typhoon warning was issued, causing schools, government buildings, and financial markets to close. Airports and ferry travel were also disrupted. [15] 183 residents evacuated to storm shelters, including 50 from a nursing home. [16] Hundreds of Chinese fishing boats rode out the storm in Taiwan harbors. [17] Similarly to Taiwan, Zeb delayed ferry service in Japan, [15] and caused 271 domestic flights to be canceled. [18] Train service was canceled on Kyushu during the storm. [19]

Philippines

Striking the Philippines at peak intensity, Zeb largely affected the island of Luzon, including the regions of Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon. [20] Wind gusts were estimated as high as 296 km/h (184 mph) in the country. [12] The storm also dropped torrential rainfall, particularly in mountainous regions. In the municipality of Bakun, the 1,000-millimetre (39-inch) rain gauge overflowed, and in nearby La Trinidad, the rainfall was 1,116 mm (43.9 in) on October 14 alone. The latter total was estimated as a one-in-1,147-year event, based on the history of local rainfall totals. [21] In the city of Baguio, the precipitation reached 994.6 mm (39.16 in), enough to flood the town 9 m (30 ft) deep. [4] The Binga and Ambuclao dams in Benguet were unable to support the rains from the storm, forcing them to be opened and flood three towns in neighboring Pangasinan. [22] Minor street flooding occurred along the west coast near Manila. [23]

Across Luzon, the high rains caused flooding, landslides, and halted construction of a dam in Bakun. [21] Considered one of the strongest typhoons to hit the area in decades, Zeb knocked down trees and power lines, which covered roads and left areas isolated. The winds were strong enough to blow over a jeepney. [8] Along its path, the storm destroyed 26,305 houses and damaged another 59,539, [20] mostly affecting those of weaker building materials. [24] River flooding caused heavy damage to crops, [22] estimated at ₱1.76 billion (1998 Philippine pesos, $41.3 million U.S. dollars); [20] the storm destroyed 181,630 t (400,430,000 lb) of rice in Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley. [4] Most of the damage occurred in Luzon, with little impact elsewhere. [25] The storm also marred the local infrastructure; areas in northeastern Luzon were isolated when landslides blocked a highway, [22] and several other roads and bridges were impassible. [13] Overall, Zeb killed 83 people in the country, [26] while injuring another 63; [20] most of the deaths were related to the landslides, [12] and 33 of the deaths were in Cordillera Administrative Region. [22] Overall damage was estimated at ₱5.375 billion (PHP, US$126 million), [20] which as of 2011 was the thirteenth-costliest typhoon in the Philippines and the fifth-costliest at the time. [27]

Elsewhere

The interaction between Zeb and the monsoon brought gusty winds to Hong Kong, reaching 88 km/h (55 mph) on Cheung Chau. High tides were also recorded, although there was no reported damage in the territory. [14]

Later, Zeb produced sustained winds of 155 km/h (96 mph) in Taiwan, although gusts topped at 191 km/h (119 mph). [25] The typhoon dropped torrential rainfall in the northern and eastern portions of the island, with peak hourly rates of 42.1 mm (1.66 in). Several regions of Taiwan received over 400 mm (16 in) of rainfall. The rains caused severe flooding along rivers, with a peak discharge of 3715 m3/s (131,193 ft3/s). [28] The high rainfall forced workers at the Fei-tsui Dam to release water, after water levels rose by 300 mm (12 in). [29] Landslides near Taipei wrecked homes, trapping at least two people. [15] Landslides also covered several highways while floods washed away bridges, cutting off traffic. [12] [16] Flooding occurred in the suburbs of Taipei, and the winds were strong enough to cause skyscrapers to sway in the city. [30] Zeb's winds knocked over trees, billboards, and power lines, [12] leaving 1.15 million without electricity. [14] Two-story high waves killed a fisherman in Taitung City, [31] washed a freighter ashore in Taichung, [17] and capsized a boat in Tamsui District, killing one sailor; five of the others on board swam two hours to reach shore. [19] The storm left $57.6 million (USD) in crop damage, [15] after hundreds of acres of fields were damaged in the southern and central Taiwan. [17] Overall damage was estimated at NT$4.15 billion (New Taiwan dollar, US$125 million), and there were 31 confirmed deaths in Taiwan, with 19 people injured. [14]

While moving through Japan, Zeb produced peak sustained winds of 130 km/h (81 mph) in Kōchi Prefecture within Shikoku. The highest rainfall was 586 mm (23.1 in) on Mount Ontake on Honshu. [32] The widespread rainfall caused 332 landslides and washed away seven bridges. [33] Within Japan, Zeb first affected Miyako-jima while passing about 180 km (110 mi) to the northwest. High winds left 2,600 houses without power and caused damage to public buildings. [34] It later passed about 230 km (140 mi) to the northwest of Okinawa. Along the island, wind gusts reached 134 km/h (83 mph), and wave heights peaked at 13.7 m (45 ft). [35] The waves swept away two people over a sea wall, [15] killing them both. High waves also damaged a port at Kadena Air Base as well as several houses near the coast. [35] The storm also passed near the Yaeyama Islands with strong winds. Salt spray coated trees and ruined them, and there was scattered public building damage. [36]

On Kyushu, Zeb damaged houses, [37] marred crops, and flooded rivers. The storm spawned a tornado in Miyazaki Prefecture that damaged two roofs and a vehicle. [38] In Saganoseki, a motorist died after a roadway collapse landed his vehicle in a nearby river. [39] On Shikoku, Zeb destroyed roads and farmlands and eroded lands along waterways. [40] Three people died due to a landslide in Matsuyama. [41] In Okayama Prefecture along Honshu, Zeb left six people missing or killed and was the costliest typhoon since Typhoon Fran in 1976. [42] Landslides killed three people in Hiroshima Prefecture. [43] Power outages and landslides affected much of Honshu, while strong winds damaged many fields. [44] A cargo freighter washed aground amid high waves in Shizuoka Prefecture, causing oil to leak and requiring assistance from the Coast Guard; oil recovery equipment was sent to the area to clean the spill. [45] Lastly, Zeb affected the northern island of Hokkaido, causing one landslide, damaging 152 buildings, and knocking 152,000 apples to the ground. [46] Nationwide, Zeb destroyed 770 homes and flooded another 12,548, [32] with thousands forced to evacuate their homes due to flooding. [15] Overall, there were 14 deaths and 67 injuries, [32] with damage estimated at $335.5 million (1998 USD). [47]

Aftermath

After the storm, then-Philippine president Joseph Estrada declared six provinces as a state of calamity, [15] which allocated ₱1 million in emergency funds for each province. [48] The president was unable to return home from a trip to Singapore due to the storm. [24] The military was activated to help organize relief efforts, [15] using rubber boats and trucks to reach the hardest hit areas as floodwaters decreased. They were aided by the Philippine Red Cross and other government agencies. [13] Most evacuees returned home after the storm passed, excluding those whose houses sustained damage. [49] Volunteers, the military, and public workers helped clean up from the damage. [26] Just seven days after Zeb's damaging Philippine landfall, another typhoon—Babs—struck the same general region with a similar, but lesser intensity. [1] After both storms, the Philippine National Electrification Administration provided ₱1.78 million to the Batanes Electric Cooperative to restore damaged power lines. [50] Power was gradually restored in northeastern Luzon, allowing communication of the damage extent. [22] The nation's Department of Health distributed ₱547,469 worth of medicine to four provinces. [13] The government airlifted about 3,000 bags of supplies to Cagayan that included rice and canned goods. [48] The back to back storm impacts caused an estimated 30% drop in coconut exports. [51] Food prices rose dramatically, in some instances up to 400%, after both storms damaged crops. [52] The storms also delayed shipments of sugar from neighboring countries, although prices were expected to fall once they arrived. [53] By December 1998, consumer prices had risen by 11.2% over the previous year due to the typhoons' damage. [54]

Workers in Taiwan began a search-and-rescue mission for missing victims once the typhoon warning was lifted. [15] Workers immediately began repairing road damage in Japan once the storm passed. [33]

The 1998 Pacific typhoon season was the least active Pacific typhoon season on record, until it was surpassed 12 years later. It would produce 16 tropical storms, 8 strengthening into typhoons. The scope of this article is limited to the Pacific Ocean, north of the equator and west of the International Date Line. Storms that form east of the date line and north of the equator are called hurricanes; see 1998 Pacific hurricane season. Tropical Storms formed in the entire west Pacific basin were assigned a name by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. Tropical depressions in this basin have the "W" suffix added to their number. Tropical depressions that enter or form in the Philippine area of responsibility are assigned a name by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA. This can often result in the same storm having two names.

Typhoon Imbudo, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Harurot, was a powerful typhoon that struck the Philippines and southern China in July 2003. The seventh named storm and fourth typhoon of the season, Imbudo formed on July 15 to the east of the Philippines. The storm moved generally west-northward for much of its duration due to a ridge to the north. Favorable conditions allowed Imbudo to intensify, gradually at first before undergoing rapid deepening on July 19. After reaching typhoon status, Imbudo strengthened further to peak 10–minute sustained winds of 165 km/h (103 mph) on July 20. The typhoon made landfall on northern Luzon near peak intensity on July 22, but quickly weakened over land. Once in the South China Sea, Imbudo re-intensified slightly before making its final landfall in southern China near Yangjiang on July 24, dissipating the next day.

Typhoon Babs, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Loleng, was a powerful typhoon that struck the Philippines days after Typhoon Zeb hit the same area. The seventh typhoon of the inactive 1998 Pacific typhoon season, Babs formed on October 14 between the Philippines and Guam. The storm moved westward initially, failing to intensify initially due to the outflow from Typhoon Zeb to the northwest. Babs slowed and briefly turned to the south before advancing to the northwest, whereupon it rapidly intensified into a strong typhoon. On October 20, the official Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) estimated peak 10‑minute winds of 155 km/h (96 mph), while the unofficial Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) estimated peak 1‑minute winds of 250 km/h (160 mph), making Babs an unofficial super typhoon. The storm struck the Philippine island of Catanduanes at that intensity and weakened slightly before hitting Luzon. Babs turned northward once in the South China Sea, later weakening due to unfavorable conditions and transitioning into an extratropical cyclone on October 27 in the Taiwan Strait.

Severe Tropical Storm Kammuri, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Lagalag, killed hundreds of people in the wake of a deadly flood season in China. The system developed from a large monsoonal system that persisted toward the end of July 2002 near the Philippines. On August 2, a tropical depression formed off the northwest coast of Luzon and moved west-northwestward. Late on August 3, it intensified into Tropical Storm Kammuri off the coast of Hong Kong. A weakening ridge turned the storm northward toward the coast of China. The storm made landfall with late on August 4, after reaching peak winds of 100 km/h (65 mph). The system dissipated over the mountainous coastline of eastern China and merged with a cold front on August 7.

Typhoon Soudelor, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Egay, was a powerful typhoon that underwent rapid deepening east of Taiwan in the 2003 Pacific typhoon season. It was the sixth named storm by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) of the season, as well as the third typhoon. It formed on June 12 from a disturbance in the monsoon trough, located east of the Philippines. The system moved generally to the northwest after its genesis, gradually intensifying into a tropical storm. While offshore the Philippines, Soudelor dropped heavy rainfall that caused flooding and left thousands homeless. The storm caused $2.46 million in damage, and 12 deaths.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Ivan</span> Pacific typhoon in 1997

Typhoon Ivan, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Narsing, was an extremely intense tropical cyclone that existed simultaneously with another storm of the same intensity, Typhoon Joan, in October 1997. Forming out of an area of disturbed weather on October 13, Ivan gradually intensified into a typhoon as it tracked steadily to the west-northwest. On October 15, the storm underwent rapid intensification and reached an intensity corresponding to Category 5 status on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale. Late on October 17, Ivan reached its peak strength with winds of 295 km/h (183 mph) and a barometric pressure of 905 hPa (mbar). Shortly thereafter, the typhoon began to weaken as it approached the Philippines. Ivan eventually made landfall in northern Luzon with winds of 220 km/h (140 mph) on October 20 before weakening to a tropical storm the next day. The storm then curved northeastward and became extratropical on October 25 and dissipating the following day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Alex (1987)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1987

Typhoon Alex, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Etang, affected the Taiwan, China, and South Korea during July 1987. Typhoon Alex developed from the monsoon trough that spawned a tropical disturbance late on July 21 southwest of Guam which organized into a tropical depression shortly thereafter. The system steadily became better organized, and the next day, a tropical depression had developed. Satellite intensity estimates gradually increased, and on July 23, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Alex. After initially tracking west-northwest, Tropical Storm Alex started tracking northwest. An eye developed on July 24, and on the next day, Alex was classified as a typhoon, when Alex attained its peak intensity of 120 km/h (75 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 970 mbar (29 inHg). Alex weakened while tracking more northward, though interaction with Taiwan resulted in a more westward track starting on July 27. The storm struck near Shanghai as a tropical storm, and weakened over land, although it remained identifiable through August 2.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Sarah (1989)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1989

Typhoon Sarah, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Openg, was a powerful typhoon that caused extensive damage along an erratic path across the Western Pacific in September 1989. Originating from a disturbance within a monsoon trough in early September, Sarah was first classified as a tropical depression near the Mariana Islands on September 5. Moving quickly westward, the depression soon strengthened into Tropical Storm Sarah. On September 8, the storm abruptly turned southward and temporarily attained typhoon status. Following a series of interactions with secondary areas of low pressure, the storm turned northward the following day. By September 11, Sarah entered a region favoring development and underwent a period of explosive intensification. At the end of this phase, the storm attained its peak intensity as a Category 4–equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale. The typhoon subsequently weakened rapidly and made two landfalls in Taiwan by September 12. After moving over the Taiwan Strait, Sarah made its final landfall in Eastern China on September 13 before dissipating the following day.

Typhoon Rammasun, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Florita, was the first of four typhoons to contribute to heavy rainfall and deadly flooding in the Philippines in July 2002. The fifth tropical cyclone of the 2002 Pacific typhoon season, Rammasun developed around the same time as Typhoon Chataan, only further to the west. The storm tracked northwestward toward Taiwan, and on July 2 it attained its peak intensity with winds of 155 km/h (96 mph). Rammasun turned northward, passing east of Taiwan and China. In Taiwan, the outer rainbands dropped rainfall that alleviated drought conditions. In China, the rainfall occurred after previously wet conditions, resulting in additional flooding, although damage was less than expected; there was about $85 million in crop and fishery damage in one province.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Cimaron (2006)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2006

Typhoon Cimaron, known in the Philippines as Super Typhoon Paeng, was the most intense tropical cyclone to strike the Philippine island of Luzon since Typhoon Zeb in 1998. Originating from a tropical depression on October 25, Cimaron developed within an environment strongly favoring tropical cyclogenesis east of the Philippines. On October 28, the system underwent rapid intensification, culminating in attaining its peak strength with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph). Estimates from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center ranked the system as a Category 5-equivalent super typhoon with one-minute sustained winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), though this is argued to have underrepresented the typhoon's strength. The system moved ashore near Casiguran, Aurora in northern Luzon at peak strength. Crossing the island, Cimaron emerged over the South China Sea where conditions allowed for temporary reorganization. After becoming nearly stationary on November 1, the typhoon executed a tight anti-cyclonic loop and rapidly weakened. The storm degenerated into a tropical depression on November 4, before dissipating three days later off the coast of Vietnam.

Typhoon Wayne, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Katring, was an intense tropical cyclone that brought significant flooding to the Philippines in July 1983. The typhoon originated from an area of disturbed weather that formed far from land towards the end of July. Late on July 22, Wayne developed gale-force winds while moving west. The next day, it was estimated to have become a typhoon, and Wayne subsequently entered a period of rapid deepening. During the morning hours of July 24, the typhoon was estimated to have reached its peak intensity of 205 km/h (125 mph), but soon began to weaken due to interaction with land. By the time it moved ashore in southern China on July 25, Wayne had weakened considerably. After moving inland, Wayne weakened rapidly. The following day, Wayne was no longer a tropical cyclone.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Kim (1980)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1980

Typhoon Kim, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Osang, was the second typhoon in a week to directly affect the Philippines during July 1980. Like Typhoon Joe, Kim formed from the near equatorial monsoon trough in the northwestern Pacific Ocean on July 19. The disturbance tracked quickly westward-northwest underneath a subtropical ridge, reaching tropical storm strength on the July 21 and typhoon strength on July 23. After developing an eye, Kim began to rapidly intensify, and during the afternoon of July 24, peaked in intensity as a super typhoon. Several hours later, Kim made landfall over the Philippines, but the storm had weakened considerably by this time. Throughout the Philippines, 40 people were killed, 2 via drownings, and 19,000 others were directly affected. A total of 12,000 homes were destroyed and 5,000 villages were flooded. Less than a week earlier, the same areas were affected by Joe; however, Kim was considered the more damaging of the two typhoons. Land interaction took its toll on Kim, and upon entering the South China Sea, the storm was down below typhoon intensity. Kim continued northwestward but its disrupted circulation prevented re-intensification, and it remained a tropical storm until hitting southern China July 27 to the northeast of Hong Kong, where only slight damage was reported. Later that day, Kim dissipated.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Abe (1990)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1990

Typhoon Abe, known as Typhoon Iliang in the Philippines, was the fourteenth named storm of 1990 Pacific typhoon season. Forming on August 23 from a tropical disturbance, the depression which would eventually develop into Typhoon Abe initially tracked in a steady west-northwestward direction. As a result of an intense monsoon surge, Abe's trajectory briefly changed to an eastward then northward path before returning to its original track. Abe only intensified by a small amount between 00:00 UTC August 24 and 06:00 UTC August 27 due to the disruptive effects of the surge, and on August 30, Abe peaked in intensity as a Category 2-equivalent typhoon on the Saffir–Simpson hurricane wind scale. After peaking in intensity, Abe crossed the Ryukyu Islands and the East China Sea, making landfall in China where it affected the provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu before entering the Yellow Sea, crossing South Korea, and finally transitioning into an extratropical cyclone.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Tropical Storm Linfa (2015)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2015

Severe Tropical Storm Linfa, known in the Philippines as Severe Tropical Storm Egay, was a tropical cyclone that affected the northern Philippines, Taiwan and southern China in early July 2015. The tenth named storm of the annual typhoon season, Linfa developed on July 1 over in the Philippine Sea. It moved erratically westward toward the Philippines, eventually striking the island of Luzon on July 4. Linfa weakened across the island, but reorganized over the South China Sea. It turned northward and strengthened to near typhoon intensity, or winds of 120 km/h (75 mph), but weakened as it curved to the northwest toward southern China. On July 9, the storm made landfall along the Chinese province of Guangdong, dissipating the next day west of Hong Kong.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Goni (2015)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2015

Typhoon Goni, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Ineng, was a powerful tropical cyclone that affected much of East Asia in late August 2015. Developing in tandem with Typhoon Atsani to its east, Goni formed on August 13, and passed through the Mariana Islands two days later. By that time, radar imagery showed a formative eye, signaling an rapidly intensifying storm. Goni evolved into an intense typhoon in the Philippine Sea before weakening and stalling north of Luzon. The typhoon re-intensified and attained peak winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) on August 23 while moving through the southern Ryukyu Islands. Goni weakened slightly and moved across the Japanese island of Kyushu. The tropical cyclone transitioned into an extratropical cyclone in the Sea of Japan on August 25, crossed into eastern Russia and China a day later, and dissipated on August 30.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Betty (1980)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1980

Typhoon Betty, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Aring, was the strongest typhoon to strike the Philippines in ten years. An area of disturbed weather developed on October 27, 1980, near Truk Atoll. After turning east from south, the disturbance was classified as a tropical storm on October 29 as it passed near Guam, causing only minor damage. Following a turn to the west-northwest, Betty attained typhoon intensity the next day. On November 4, Betty peaked in intensity. Later that day, Betty moved ashore over Luzon, introducing a rapid weakening trend. Over land, Betty then began to turn north due to a weakening subtropical ridge to its north and a trough offshore Taiwan. By November 8, Betty, after moving offshore, had completed its transition into an extratropical cyclone, and dissipated that same day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Warren</span> Pacific typhoon in 1988

Typhoon Warren, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Huaning, struck the Philippines and China during July 1988. An area of disturbed weather developed within the vicinity of the Caroline Islands during the second week of July. A tropical depression developed southeast of Guam on July 12, and on the next day, intensified into a tropical storm. Tracking generally west-northwest, Warren deepened into a typhoon on July 14. The storm subsequently entered a period of rapid intensification, commencing with Warren reaching its highest intensity on July 16. The following evening, the typhoon brushed Luzon, resulting in a weakening trend, although Warren was still a typhoon when it made landfall near Shantou. Warren rapidly dissipated inland.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Ofelia</span> Pacific typhoon in 1990

Typhoon Ofelia, known as Typhoon Bising in the Philippines, was the first of two typhoons in 1990 to directly affect the Philippines within a week. Typhoon Ofelia originated from an area of disturbed weather embedded in the monsoon trough situated near the Caroline Islands. Slowly organizing, the disturbance tracked westward, and was designated a tropical depression on June 15. After an increase in convection, the depression was upgraded into a tropical storm on June 17. On June 19, Ofelia turned northwest and after development of a central dense overcast, Ofelia was upgraded into a typhoon late on June 20. After turning north, Ofelia obtained its maximum intensity following the development of an eye. The typhoon skirted past the northeastern tip of Luzon and near the east coast of Taiwan, commencing a rapid weakening trend. On the evening on June 23, Ofelia struck the southern portion of Zhejiang. The storm then began to track north, recurving towards the Korean Peninsula. The storm tracked through the province of Jiangsu, and at 00:00 UTC on June 24, transitioned into an extratropical cyclone, only to merge with a frontal zone on June 25.
