The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is the busiest port in the world in terms of cargo tonnage. It handled 888.96 million tons of cargo in 2015. [1] The port is located in Ningbo and Zhoushan,on the coast of the East China Sea,in Zhejiang province on the southeast end of Hangzhou Bay,across which it faces the municipality of Shanghai. [2]
The port is at the crossroads of the north–south inland and coastal shipping route,including canals to the important inland waterway to interior China,the Yangtze River,to the north. The port consists of several ports which are Beilun (seaport),Zhenhai (estuary port),and old Ningbo harbor (inland river port).
The operator of the port,Ningbo Zhoushan Port Co.,Ltd. (NZP),is a listed company,but it is 76.31% owned by state-owned Ningbo Zhoushan Port Group Co.,Ltd.,As of 30 June 2017 [update] .
Ningbo Port was established in 1738. During the Tang dynasty (618–907),it was known as one of the three major seaports for foreign trade under the name "Mingzhou",along with Yangzhou and Guangzhou. [3]
In the Song dynasty,it became one of the three major port cities for foreign trade,together with Guangzhou and Quanzhou. [3] It was designated as one of the "Five Treaty Ports" along with Guangzhou,Xiamen,Fuzhou and Shanghai after the 1842 Treaty of Nanking that ended the First Opium War. [4]
In 2006,the Port of Ningbo was merged with the neighboring Port of Zhoushan to form a combined cargo handling center. The combined Ningbo-Zhoushan Port handled a total cargo volume of 744,000,000 metric tons of cargo in 2012, [5] making it the largest port in the world in terms of cargo tonnage,surpassing the Port of Shanghai for the first time.
The port is part of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road that runs from the Chinese coast to Singapore,towards the southern tip of India to Mombasa,from there through the Red Sea via the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean,there to the Upper Adriatic region to the northern Italian hub of Trieste with its connections to Central Europe and the North Sea. The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan is involved in economic trade with cargo shipment,raw materials and manufactured goods from as far as North and South America and Oceania. It has economic trade with over 560 ports from more than 90 countries and regions in the world. [9] [10] It is one of a growing number of ports in China with a cargo throughput volume exceeding 100 million tons annually. [9]
The water quality within Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has become badly polluted over the past ten years,due to the massive scale of maritime traffic constantly in operation. [4]
The Port of Ningbo-Zhoushan complex is a modern multi-purpose deep water port,consisting of inland,estuary,and coastal harbors. [11] There are a total of 191 berths including 39 deep water berths with 10,000 and more tonnage. [11]
The larger ports include a 250,000 tonnage crude oil terminal and a 200,000+ tonnage ore loading berth. [11] There is also a purpose-built terminal for 6th generation container vessels and a 50,000 tonnage berth dedicated for liquid chemical products. [9]
In August 2020,the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port (NZP) Group,together with Brazilian iron ore miner Vale,inaugurated the Shulanghu (鼠浪湖码头) [12] grinding hub,after a collaboration that began in 2016. [13] This was followed in November 2020 by an CN¥4.3 billion (US$650.6 million) investment deal. The Zhejiang Free Trade Zone was quoted as stating that an "iron ore storage yard,with a maximum capacity of 4.1 million tonnes,an ore blending and processing facility and two shipping berths" would be built. [14]
A port is a maritime facility comprising one or more wharves or loading areas,where ships load and discharge cargo and passengers. Although usually situated on a sea coast or estuary,ports can also be found far inland,such as Hamburg,Manchester and Duluth;these access the sea via rivers or canals. Because of their roles as ports of entry for immigrants as well as soldiers in wartime,many port cities have experienced dramatic multi-ethnic and multicultural changes throughout their histories.

The port of Ningbo–Zhoushan,spread across several locations,is the world's busiest port by cargo tonnage and world's third-busiest container port since 2010.
Zhoushan is an urbanized archipelago with the administrative status of a prefecture-level city in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang. It consists of an archipelago of islands at the southern mouth of Hangzhou Bay,off the mainland city of Ningbo. The prefecture's city proper is Dinghai on Zhoushan Island,now administered as the prefecture's Dinghai District. During the 2020 census,Zhoushan Prefecture's population was 1,157,817,out of whom 882,932 lived in the built-up area made of two urban districts of Dinghai and Putuo.
The Port of Zhuhai is the port of the prefecture-level city of Zhuhai,on the west side of the Pearl River estuary in the Chinese province of Guangdong. The Port of Zhuhai is composed of seven main port areas:Gaolan,Wanshan,Jiuzhou,Xiangzhou,Tangjia,Hongwan and Doumen. The main areas are the Jiuzhou Port Area to the east of the city,and the Gaolan Port Area to the west. As of 2012,the port had 131 berths,126 production berths,of which 17 were deep-water berths over 10,000DWT.
Port of Guangzhou is the main seaport of Guangzhou city,Guangdong province,China. The port is operated by Guangzhou Port Group Co. Ltd which is a state owned company. The company was established on February 26,2004 from the former Guangzhou Harbor Bureau. It was approved by the Guangzhou Municipal Government. It is currently the largest comprehensive port in South China. Its international maritime trade reaches over 300 ports in more than 80 countries and districts worldwide. The port also incorporates the former Huangpu Port.
Port of Suzhou is the collective name of three ports around the city of Suzhou,Jiangsu Province,China. The three ports are located in Zhangjiagang,Changshu and Taicang,respectively,on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The total cargo throughput of 454 million tons in 2013. As of 2013,it is the busiest inland river port in the world by annual cargo tonnage and container volume,as well as the sixth-busiest port by annual cargo tonnage. The majority of the port trade is in coal,ore,steel,and construction materials such as cement.
The Port of Xiamen is an important deep water port located on Xiamen Island,the adjacent mainland coast,and along the estuary of the Jiulong River in southern Fujian,China. It is one of the trunk line ports in the Asia-Pacific region. It is ranked the 8th-largest container port in China and ranks 17th in the world. It is the 4th port in China with the capacity to handle 6th-generation large container vessels. In 2013,Xiamen handled 191 million tons of cargo,including 8.08 million TEUs of containers. On 31 August 2010,Xiamen Port incorporated the neighboring port of Zhangzhou to form the largest port of China's Southeast. This was a relatively uncommon case of ports merging across jurisdictions.
The Port of Tianjin,formerly known as the Port of Tanggu,is the largest port in Northern China and the main maritime gateway to Beijing. The name "Tianjin Xingang",which strictly speaking refers only to the main seaport area,is sometimes used to refer to the whole port. The port is on the western shore of the Bohai Bay,centred on the estuary of the Haihe River,170 km southeast of Beijing and 60 km east of Tianjin city. It is the largest man-made port in mainland China,and one of the largest in the world. It covers 121 square kilometers of land surface,with over 31.9 km of quay shoreline and 151 production berths at the end of 2010.
Since 2018,transport occupied a relatively low priority in China's national development. In the twenty-five years that followed the founding of the People's Republic in 1949,China's transportation network was built into a partially modern but somewhat inefficient system. The drive to modernize the transport system,that began in 1978,required a sharp acceleration in investment. Though despite increased investment and development in the 1980s,the transport sector was strained by the rapid expansion of production and the exchange of goods.
The Ningbo−Zhoushan Expressway,commonly referred to as the Yongzhou Expressway,is an expressway in Zhejiang,China which links Ningbo to Zhoushan. In the National Trunk Highway System (NTHS) in China,the number of this highway is G9211.
The Xiaoshan–Ningbo railway or Xiaoyong railway,is a double-track railroad in eastern China between Hangzhou and Ningbo in Zhejiang Province. Its name in Chinese,the Xiaoyong Line,is named after the railway's two terminal stations,Hangzhou South in Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou on the southern bank of Qiantang River,and Ningbo,whose Chinese character abbreviation is yong. The line is 147.3 km (92 mi) long and was originally built in three parts in 1912,1914 and 1936;rebuilt in 1959,then electrified in 2009. Cities along route include Xiaoshan District of Hangzhou,Shaoxing,Shangyu,Yuyao and Ningbo,all in Zhejiang Province. The Hangzhou–Ningbo high-speed railway runs parallel to the line. The section between Ningbo and Zhuangqiao railway station is proposed to be quadruple-tracked.
The Port of Nanjing is located in Nanjing,Jiangsu Province,China,and is the largest inland port in the world,with throughput reaching 191 million tons of cargo in 2012. Nanjing Port has a long history reaching back to A.D 229,when it became a major seaport. It is situated in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River,just before the start of the Yangtze Delta. The Port has authority over 208 km of Yangtze River shoreline,110 km in the North Shore and 98 km in the South Shore. As of 2010,it operated six public ports and three industrial ports.
The Port of Huanghua,also known as the Port of Cangzhou Huanghua is an artificial deep-water international seaport on the coast of Huanghua,Cangzhou Prefecture,Hebei,People's Republic of China. It is located on the south side of the Bohai Bay,90 km from Cangzhou city. Huanghua port is one of the largest and fastest growing ports in North China,with a throughput of 171.03 million tons of total cargo in 2013,an increase of 35.42% year on year.
The Port of Jiangyin is a natural inland port located at Jiangyin,Wuxi Prefecture,Jiangsu,People's Republic of China. It extends over 35 kilometres (22 mi) of the southern shore of the Yangtze river. The port had a container throughput of 1,001,000 TEU in 2013.
The Port of Huizhou is a natural coastal port located on Huizhou,Guangdong,People's Republic of China,immediately east of Shenzhen and Hong Kong. It opens into the Daya Bay. Started only 20 years ago,it has moved from a fishing village to another large player in the Pearl River Delta shipping hub. In 2012,its total cargo throughput was 51,18 million tonnes.

The Port of Zhenjiang is a natural inland river port located on Zhengjiang Prefectural Level city,Jiangsu,People's Republic of China. It is one of the succession of large shipping hubs lining the estuary and lower course of the Yangtze. The Port had a throughput of 140,984,000 tonnes of total cargo in 2013,an increase of 4.7%
Ningbo–Zhoushan high-speed railway is a high-speed railway under construction in Zhejiang Province,China. It will be 76.396 kilometres (47.5 mi) long and have a design speed of 250 kilometres per hour (160 mph). It is expected to open in 2028.
