With an operation focus on domestic routes, UNI Air is a subsidiary of Evergreen Group, making it a sister airline of the mainline operator EVA Air. It was known as Makung Airlines (馬公航空) until 1996, when EVA Air took a majority share of the airline. In 1998, the airline merged with Great China Airlines (大華航空) and Taiwan Airways (臺灣航空), which EVA Air also had interests in, to form UNI Airways.

It is on the east bank of the Pearl River in Bao'an District, 32 km (20 mi) northwest of the city centre. It is a hub for Shenzhen Airlines and Donghai Airlines and for cargo airline SF Airlines, China Southern Airlines and Hainan Airlines. The airport also serves as an Asian-Pacific cargo hub for UPS Airlines. The airport underwent major expansions in the 2010s, with a second runway opening in 2011, and a new terminal in 2013.

Tigerair Taiwan is a Taiwanese low-cost airline based at Taoyuan International Airport. It was formed as a joint venture between China Airlines Group (80%), Mandarin Airlines (10%) and Tiger Airways Holdings (10%). In 2017, China Airlines acquired the 10% shares held by Budget Aviation Holdings after Tigerair Singapore has merged with Scoot. Tigerair Taiwan is the only LCC in Taiwan following the collapse of TransAsia Airways and V Air in 2016 and also the only airline left with Tigerair branding, after Tigerair Australia ceased operations in March 2020.
