Typhoon Manny, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Naning, was a long-lived and deadly tropical cyclone that struck the Philippines during the 1993 Pacific typhoon season. It was the second typhoon to hit the Visayas, in the central Philippines, that year, following Kyle. The twenty-ninth named storm and fifteenth typhoon of the season, the system formed from a near-equatorial trough that also spawned Lola during the month in the east Caroline Islands on December 3. Moving northwestwards, it strengthened to a tropical storm on the next day before intensifying further to a severe tropical storm that night. The system attained typhoon status on December 8, while making an anticyclonic loop, nearly the same as Pamela, 11 years later. It then rapidly intensified while moving to the southwest, with the typhoon reaching its peak of 220 km/h (140 mph) and an unusually high barometric pressure of 960 mbar before crossing the central Philippines on December 10 and 11. It soon moved through the South China Sea as a tropical storm before weakening to a tropical depression as it encountered high wind shear. However, it restrengthened back to a tropical storm as it moved back again to a favorable environment before passing to the south of Vietnam as the system weakened back below gale-force winds. It then dissipated on December 16 as it passed through Thailand.

On Yap, Manny produced some minor damages to trees, while causing some squally rains. In the Philippines, Naning claimed at least 245 lives, and caused widespread flooding and landslides across Visayas and Mimaropa; however, the capital Manila was spared. There were no reports of damages in Vietnam and Thailand; however, the latter saw some low-lying floods. The total damages from Manny were estimated at $50 million (1993 USD).

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) started to monitor an area of convection embedded from a near-equatorial trough, near Tofol in Kosrae State on December 1. [1] At this time, the disturbance is in a marginally favorable environment, including warm sea surface temperatures and radial outflow, being offset by high wind shear, as being evidenced by satellite imagery. [2] On the next day, the organization of the disturbance became well-defined, with the JTWC first mentioning the system in their Significant Tropical Weather Advisory, while located to the east of Pohnpei, Caroline Islands. [1] However, as the disturbance entered yet again a hostile environment, the system became disorganized on satellite imagery as the convection became sheared to the east of its supposed low-level circulation center. [2] Early on December 3, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued their first advisory on the system, first monitoring it as a disturbance. [2] Three hours later, at 03:00 UTC, the JTWC issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert on the disturbance, despite the highly disorganized nature of the system. [1] At 06:00 UTC of the same day, the agency upgraded the system to a tropical depression, most likely based on estimates of 25 knots and surface synoptic data from the Carolines. [1] Nine hours later, the depression's organization became defined again as being evidenced on satellite photos. [2]

At 18:00 UTC of the next day, the JTWC upgraded the system to a tropical storm, based on its estimates of 85 km/h (50 mph); however, it was deemed that the system may have intensified, six hours later. [1] At that time, the storm started to move to the northwest, due to a high pressure situated on Indonesia. [2] [3] The JMA upgraded the system to a tropical storm only six hours later and had a slightly low estimate of 65 km/h (40 mph). [2] The former also gave the name Manny on the intensifying system. [1] The storm began to slow down as it continued northwestward before strengthening to a severe tropical storm at 12:00 UTC of the next day. [4] At this time, Manny entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility and was locally named Naning by the PAGASA. [5] There, the local meteorological forecasters depicted of a possible landfall in Luzon between December 9 and 10, while Lola is devastating the country. [5]

On December 7, Manny began making an anticyclonic loop while located approximately 950 km to the east of the Philippine capital Manila. [6] [1] While looping, the system intensified to a typhoon with an evidence of a ragged, but small eye and estimates of 75 knots, early on the next day. [1] The interesting but unusual loop executed by Manny was nearly the same as Pamela in the 1982 season (though Pamela completed the circle faster than Manny). [1] As it completed the loop on December 9, the system further intensified to a mid-level typhoon as it started to rapidly intensify. [1] In the warm waters of the Philippine Sea, the system explosively strengthened to its peak of 220 km/h (140 mph) and a minimum barometric pressure of 920 mbar while moving south-southwestward, which is equivalent to a violent Category 4 major typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. [6] Its eye also became well-defined and the system became compact in size. [1]

Shortly after peaking, Manny started to weaken as it encountered wind shear, although it remained a major typhoon until it made landfall somewhere near Bobon and Catarman in Northern Samar between 23:00 UTC of December 9 and 02:00 UTC of the next day. [5] On mid-morning, it moved through the Samar Sea as it made another landfall on the island municipality of Capul, still in Northern Samar. [2] As it moved to the west, the typhoon started to rapidly weaken, passing through the island of Masbate as a Category 3 typhoon before arriving again in the Sibuyan Sea. [2] It then passed through/near the islands of Sibuyan and Tablas of Romblon as a mid-level typhoon before arriving in the Tablas Strait. [2] Manny further degraded to a Category 1 typhoon as the convection became disorganized while traversing the central Philippines. [2] Its final landfall were near Bulalacao in Oriental Mindoro before arriving in waters, at Mindoro Strait. [2] It then shifted its movement to the south-southwest, skirting the north and northeastern coasts of Palawan on December 11 as a tropical storm before moving through the South China Sea. [2] It passed through some islands and reefs of Spratly Islands before weakening further to a tropical depression later that night, likely due to the leftover moisture from just the dissipated Lola. [2] [1] The JMA issued their final warning on the system on 00:00 UTC of December 12; [2] however, the JTWC continued to monitor the system for possible restrengthening. [1]

As a highly disorganized system, Manny remained weak and ill of convection due to the northeast monsoon. [1] The system, simultaneously, exited the PAR, with the PAGASA issuing their final warning. [2] After a day of meandering while over the South China Sea, Manny unexpectedly restrengthened to a tropical storm on December 13 near the waters of Vietnam, with bursts of scattered convection struggling to consolidate in its center, as being evidenced on satellite imagery. [2] [6] The JMA began to reissue their warnings on the system at 06:00 UTC of that day. [2] The storm began to reorganize slightly while moving to the south-southwest, sparing Vietnam from its effects before peaking as a minimal storm. [2] It peaked on 18:00 UTC, with the JTWC at 40 knots, while JMA at 35 knots. [2] Continuous effects of wind shear, altogether with unfavorable sea surface temperatures and poor outflow gradually weakened Manny, with the JMA issuing their final warning at 00:00 UTC of December 14, while the JTWC continued issuing bulletins on the system until it dissipated at 06:00 UTC as it made landfall in Thailand. [2] [1]

Preparations

There were no reports of preparations from Tropical Storm Manny in Yap, Chuuk and Pohnpei as they forecasted it to move safely through these islands. [1]

Since December 10, the meteorological forecasters, including the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) strictly watched the movement of the typhoon for its possible landfall and hazards. [5] [7] [8] [9] [10] Some coconut traders and farmers also monitored the typhoon's track as coconuts' prices and trades soared high, due to the devastating effects of Lola that struck the country, not a week later. [11] [12] Also that day, the PAGASA raised their highest public storm warning signal over Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Samar, Burias Island, Masbate, Biliran, Romblon, the whole island of Panay, northern portions of Leyte, Cebu, the island of Negros and Cuyo Island in Palawan due to the violent storm. [5] 57 evacuation centers throughout the central Philippines accommodated 12,205 families as they prepare for the brunt of the storm. [5]

Impact

In Yap State, some residents experienced a wind speed of 38 knots from the storm, downing some banana trees and twigs, but there were no reports of affected buildings and structures. No deaths and injuries were reported and the total damages were minimal, though there were no exact amounts. [1]

Numerous landslides and flash floods occurred and reported in the central Philippines, mainly in Samar and Camarines Sur. [13] Combined reports from official and reliable sources at that time, the deaths from the typhoon were finalized at 245 individuals, missings at 66, and over 524 injured, which the majority are due to drowning and mudslides. [5] [14] [15] [16] [17] 164,800 individuals were homeless and nearly a million were affected, in the other hand. [5] 36,913 houses were completely destroyed, while 128,915 more were partially damaged. [5] A vessel sunk in an unknown place, drowning nine individuals; however, they were included as missing. [18] 15 persons died from swollen rivers in Mindoro Occidental and another 14 in Samar, which are mostly because they are pinned by fallen coconut trees. [13] [19] Thirty percent of the coconut plantations were destroyed and many farmlands were either washed out or flooded. [20] The total amount of damages from the typhoon at the Philippines were estimated at $50 million (1993 USD). [5]

Some rain showers began to impact Thailand on the night of December 15; however, no damages and deaths were reported, except for some low-lying floods. [15]

Aftermath

After Manny devastated the storm-weary Philippines, then-president Fidel V. Ramos declared a state of calamity on Sorsogon, Masbate, Romblon and Northern Samar due to the catastrophic effects of the typhoon. [21] [22] This means that relief help and operations were speeded in these areas to assist the evacuees that are affected. [21]

On December 13, The Philippine National Red Cross and International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (IRCRCM) issued an appeal for assistance on the country, which amounts to $2.122 million (1993 USD) to provide evacuees food and non-food assistance, nutrition centres, distribution of seedlings for affected farmers and fishing nets for fishermen. [5] Food supplies, blankets, clothing, and other essential supplies were also given to the evacuees by planes and helicopters due to the fact that some evacuation centers were blocked and/or impassable by land vehicles. [5]

On December 14, while the typhoon is weakening over the South China Sea, the Eastern Samar experienced a magnitude 5.3 earthquake which killed a person and injured two more. [19] This brought further devastation to the area, where subsequent buildings sustained damages. [19]

These efforts were again halted as the last storm of the season, Tropical Storm Nell impacts Mindanao and Visayas, causing another round of floods and landslides before, during and after Christmas Day. [23]

Typhoon Lingling, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Nanang, was a deadly typhoon that struck the Philippines and China in 2001 and caused 379 deaths. The name "Lingling" was given by Hong Kong. The 39th tropical depression, 22nd named storm, and 13th typhoon of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, Lingling developed into a tropical depression on November 6 and given the local name Nanang by the PAGASA. The next day, it was upgraded into a tropical storm and given the name Lingling by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Lingling's intensity briefly stagnated as it moved over Visayas before resuming intensification and intensifying into a severe tropical storm on November 8. One day later, both the JMA and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) upgraded Lingling to a typhoon as it exited the Philippine archipelago and moved into the South China Sea. After intensifying into a typhoon, Lingling began to quickly intensify, peaking with 10-min sustained winds of 155 km/h (100 mph) and 1-min sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph), with a minimum central pressure of 940 mbar (27.76 inHg). Lingling began to weaken as it approached the Vietnamese coast, before making landfall on November 11 at 18:00 UTC. Lingling rapidly weakened afterward, dissipating on November 12.

Typhoon Faith, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Norming, struck both the Philippines and Vietnam during December 1998. A tropical disturbance developed within the vicinity of the western Caroline Islands during early December. At midday on December 8, the system developed into a tropical depression. Tracking northwest at a brisk pace, the depression gradually intensified, and was upgraded into a tropical storm at noon on December 9. Quickly intensifying, Faith turned to the west-northwest, and after tracking near Samar Island on the evening of December 10, Faith attained typhoon intensity. After clipping the northern tip of Palawan Island, the typhoon entered the South China Sea at peak intensity. Across the Philippines, 33 people were killed, with 30 others wounded and 36 others listed missing. A total of 6,423 homes were damaged and 3,234 houses were destroyed, leaving more than 20,000 homeless. Damage was estimated at $25.9 million, with $6.82 million from crops, $15.9 million from public infrastructure, and $3.37 million from private infrastructure.

The 2021 Pacific typhoon season was the second consecutive to have below-average tropical cyclone activity, with twenty-two named storms, and was the least active since 2011. Nine became typhoons, and five of those intensified into super typhoons. This low activity was caused by a strong La Niña that had persisted from the previous year. The season's first named storm, Dujuan, developed on February 16, while the last named storm, Rai, dissipated on December 21. The season's first typhoon, Surigae, reached typhoon status on April 16. It became the first super typhoon of the year on the next day, also becoming the strongest tropical cyclone in 2021. Surigae was also the most powerful tropical cyclone on record in the Northern Hemisphere for the month of April. Severe Tropical Storm Usagi, known in the Philippines as Tropical Storm Samuel, was a tropical cyclone that affected the Philippines and Southern Vietnam in late November 2018, causing severe damage around the Visayas region and Ho Chi Minh City. The storm formed from a disturbance in the Central Pacific basin on November 3, but did not develop into a tropical storm until almost three weeks later, on November 13. Usagi underwent rapid intensification and peaked in intensity before making its final landfall on Vũng Tàu, Bà Rịa–Vũng Tàu province as a weakening tropical storm on November 25. While never considered as a typhoon by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) assessed its intensity to be equivalent to Category 2 status on the Saffir–Simpson scale. Usagi caused one death and ₱52.2 million (US$992,000) in damages in the Philippines, most of which came from agriculture. Usagi caused 3 deaths and ₫925 billion in damages in Vietnam.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Toraji (2001)</span> Western Pacific typhoon in 2001

Typhoon Toraji, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Isang, was one of the deadliest tropical cyclones to hit the island country of Taiwan, since 1961. The eight named storm and the third typhoon of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, Toraji's origins were from an area of convection that persisted to the west of Guam. Moving north-northwest over favorable conditions, the disturbance intensified to a tropical depression, while the JTWC issued a TCFA on the newly-developed system. On July 26, the depression entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility, with the PAGASA naming it Isang. Strong easterly wind shear inhibited further development; however, as the shear relaxed, both the JTWC and PAGASA upgraded the system to a tropical storm with also the JMA following suit hours later. Now named Toraji, the storm slowly intensified, reaching typhoon status on the next day. Toraji continued to gain strength until it made landfall as a Category 2 typhoon near Taipei on July 29. Despite the rugged terrains of the country, the JTWC upgraded the system further to a Category 3, shortly before weakening as it moved offshore on Taiwan Strait. The JMA and PAGASA downgraded the typhoon to a tropical storm, with the latter issuing their final advisory as it moved out of their AOR. It continued to weaken, with the JTWC also downgrading the system to a tropical storm, before making landfall near Fuzhou on July 31 before it was last noted by the next day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Lola (1993)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1993

Typhoon Lola, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Monang, was a deadly typhoon that impacted the Philippines and Indochina. The 47th tropical depression, 26th named storm, and 14th typhoon of the 1993 Pacific typhoon season, the origins of Lola can be traced back to an active near-equatorial trough. The JTWC began monitoring an area of convection on November 27, and on December 1, it developed into a tropical depression. The JMA upgraded the depression to a tropical storm the next day, with the JTWC giving it the name Lola on December 3. 12 hours later, the JMA upgraded Lola to a severe tropical storm. On December 4 at 6:00 UTC, the JTWC upgraded Lola to a typhoon. Shortly after, Lola reached its initial peak intensity, with the JMA assessing that it had peaked with a minimum central pressure of 955 hPa; Lola made landfall near the municipality of Vinzons on December 5 at 12:00 UTC. After making landfall, Lola weakened to a tropical storm as it emerged over the South China Sea on December 6, before re-strengthening into a typhoon. After strengthening into a typhoon, Lola began to quickly intensify, reaching its peak intensity with 1-min winds of 195 km/h (120 mph) on December 8 at 12:00 UTC. Lola weakened slightly before making its final landfall near the city of Camh Ranh as a Category 2-equivalent storm. Lola quickly weakened over land, dissipating on December 9.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Flo (1993)</span> Pacific typhoon in 1993

Typhoon Flo, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Kadiang, was a catastrophic and deadly minimal typhoon that hit the northern Philippines during October 1993. It also caused the largest 72-hour forecast error for the year due to its interaction with the nearby Super Typhoon Ed. The twenty-seventh depression, twenty-second named storm and the eleventh typhoon of the 1993 Pacific typhoon season, Flo originated from an area of convection that was embedded from a monsoon trough during September 28. Two days later, a tropical depression formed within this trough, to the west of Guam. Slowly organizing, it remained a tropical depression until on October 2, when it strengthened to a tropical storm and was given the name Flo by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Slight wind shear from nearby Ed inhibited development; however, it intensified to a minimal typhoon as it neared the coastline of Luzon. On October 3, it made landfall near the Isabela-Aurora in its peak. It then crossed the country while weakening, and moved ashore near the South China Sea the next morning. It then unexpectedly moved back to the country due to its interaction with Ed, and it moved back to the Philippine Sea on October 17 before accelerating to the south of Japan. It then became extratropical on the next day.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Kyle (1993)</span> Western Pacific typhoon in 1993

Typhoon Kyle, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Luring, was the first of five deadly tropical cyclones that affected and impacted the Philippines and Vietnam during the 1993 Pacific typhoon season. The twenty-seventh named storm and thirteenth typhoon of the season, Kyle formed from a monsoon depression near Palau, associated with bursts of scattered convection. It then drifted west-northwest, strengthening to a tropical storm the next day. Land interaction prevented further intensification, and it crossed through the central Philippines while maintaining its intensity on November 20. Upon entering the South China Sea, the system strengthened to a severe tropical storm before rapidly intensifying to a typhoon, three days later. It soon reached its peak intensity that day, with one-minute maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h (110 mph), equivalent to a mid-level Category 2 typhoon. It held its strength until landfall in Vietnam later that evening. Weakening through the mountainous terrain of the country, it dissipated near the Cambodia–Thailand border on November 24.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Typhoon Danas (2001)</span> Pacific typhoon in 2001

Typhoon Danas was an intense Category 3 typhoon that struck Japan in September of 2001. As the fifteenth named storm and the seventh typhoon of the 2001 Pacific typhoon season, it originated from an area of convection many miles to the west of Wake Island. It developed gradually causing the Joint Typhoon Warning Center to issue their first warning on September 3, with the system being classified as Tropical Depression 19W. It was late upgraded to a tropical storm that same day, gaining the name Danas. It began to rapidly intensify as it moved west. It strengthened into a typhoon the following day, and Danas still continued to strengthen until it reached its peak with winds of 195 kilometres per hour (120 mph). It maintained its strength for 18 hours. It then began to head towards Japan. It quickly weakened and made landfall in Japan on September 11. After crossing the eastern portion of Honshu, Danas weakened into a tropical storm. On September 12, it transitioned into an extratropical cyclone. The name Danas was submitted by the Philippines and is an Austronesian verb meaning to experience or to feel.
