Universal Music Latin Entertainment, a division of Universal Music Group, is a record company specialized in producing and distributing Latin music in Mexico, the United States, and Puerto Rico. UMLE includes famous Latin music labels such as Universal Music Latino, Fonovisa Records, Universal Music Mexico, Capitol Latin, Machete Music and Disa Records. [1]

The record company was created in 2008 with the acquisition of Univision Music Group and combining it with Universal Music's top Latin artists, along with much of the Latin back catalog of UMG. [2]

Labels

Univision Records (2001–2008)

Launched mid 2001, Univision Records already had an impressive artist roster: [ citation needed ] Anasol, Pilar Montenegro, Anaís, Jennifer Peña, Graciela Beltrán, Iman, Los Forasteros, Daniel René, and most recently Mexican Ranchero music icon, Pepe Aguilar.

Fonovisa Records

Acquired in 2002 back then by Univision Music Group, Fonovisa is the largest Regional Mexican label in the music industry [ citation needed ] and since 1984 has launched major Latin stars into international markets and mainstream America.

Disa Records

Disa Records is the second largest Regional-Mexican label after Fonovisa. [ citation needed ] It was owned by the Chávez family of Monterrey until June 2001, when Univision acquired 50% of Disa from the Chávez family. In November 2006 Univision acquired the other 50% of the label making it a subsidiary of Univision Music Group.

Machete Music

Machete Music includes the top reggaeton artists from Puerto Rico and Latin artists from all over the world. Artists like Akwid, Wisin & Yandel, Ivy Queen, Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Molotov, and others.

Universal Music Latino

Formed in 1997, [3] Universal Music Latino includes top artists from the Latin music genre, including Lucero, Tono Rosario, music group Belanova, music artists Belinda, Luis Fonsi, Enrique Iglesias, Juanes, Olga Tañón, David Bisbal, Paulina Rubio, and recently Dulce María. PolyGram Latino merged with Universal Music Latino after Universal Music Group's acquisition of PolyGram. [4] In 2006 UML with Vene Music started Siente Music. Canadian born artist Nelly Furtado and Miami rapper Pitbull have also joined Universal to release a Spanish album.

Capitol Latin

Following Universal Music Group's acquisition of EMI Music in 2012, Capitol Latin was merged with UMLE. The label includes artists that were signed on at the time of the acquisition. [5]

Aftercluv Dance Lab

A label which focuses mainly on the electronic music Latin audience. Launched in 2014, musical acts that have signed on to the label include Cher Lloyd, 3Ball MTY, Juan Magan, Atellagali, Marcelo Cic, and Buraka Som Sistema. [6]

Fonovisa Records is an American Spanish language record label founded in 1984 by Guillermo Santiso as a subsidiary of Televisa. Its former name before being acquired by Televisa in 1984 was Profono Internacional, which was founded in 1978. Fonovisa mainly produces Mexican style music. It is well known for its signing with artists such as Los Tigres Del Norte, Los Bukis, Los Temerarios, Enrique Iglesias, Lucero and Thalía.

Founded in April 2001 by Univision Communications, the Univision Music Group included three record labels: Univision Records, Fonovisa Records and Disa Records. In June 2001, Univision Music acquired a 50% interest in Mexico-based Disa Records, the second largest independent Spanish language record label in the world, and Mexico's leading independent label. More recently in April 2002, Univision acquired Fonovisa, the largest Latin independent label specializing in Regional Mexican music.

Dolores Janney "Jenni" Rivera was a Mexican-American singer known for her work within the regional Mexican music genre, specifically in the styles of banda, mariachi and norteño. In life and death, several media outlets including CNN, Billboard, Fox News, and The New York Times have labeled her the most important female figure and top-selling female artist in regional Mexican music. Billboard magazine named her the "top Latin artist of 2013", and the "best selling Latin artist of 2013".

The 2006 Billboard Latin Music Awards, produced and broadcast lived on Telemundo, were held on Thursday, April 27, 2006. The award show aired on Telemundo at 8pm EST. The awards show and after party were held at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida.

The Billboard Latin Music Awards grew out of the Billboard Music Awards program from Billboard Magazine, an industry publication charting the sales and radio airplay success of musical recordings. Originally launched as the Billboard Latin Music Conference in 1990, the first awards began in 1994. The album includes tracks recorded by several artist from the regional Mexican genre, such as Julión Álvarez y su Norteño Banda, Voz de Mando, Vagón Chicano, Enigma Norteño, Larry Hernández, Los Horóscopos de Durango, Chuy Lizárraga y su Banda Tierra Sinaloense, Grupo Violento, Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizárraga, El Chapo de Sinaloa, Fidel Rueda and Alfredo Olivas.

3BallMTY is a Mexican pop DJ group from the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The "DJ Collective" was formed in 2009 by two teenage DJs – Sergio Zavala, and Alberto Presenda. The name "3Ball" comes from the Spanish word "tribal", which refers to the culture of guaracha tribal music popular in many Spanish-speaking countries around the world.

Joyas Prestadas: Pop and Joyas Prestadas: Banda are the 11th and final studio albums by recording artist Jenni Rivera, released on November 21, 2011, by Fonovisa Records. Joyas Prestadas consists of a double album with eleven cover songs, each recorded with two distinct styles of music. The first half being recorded in pop, while the second was recorded in the Regional Mexican subgenre of banda. The album was produced by Enrique Martinez. According to Rivera, the songs she chose to cover were those she was enamored with while working as a cashier in a record store.

The 2014 Billboard Latin Music Awards, honors the most popular albums, songs, and performers in Latin music in 2013, as determined by the actual sales, radio airplay, streaming and social data that supplements Billboard's weekly charts. The ceremony was broadcast live on Telemundo and mun2 on April 24, 2014, from the BankUnited Center at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. The hosts were Raúl González, Roselyn Sánchez, and Laura Flores.

The 25th Lo Nuestro Awards ceremony, presented by the American network Univision, honored the best Latin music of 2012 in the United States and took place on February 21, 2013, at the American Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST / 8:00 p.m. EST. During the ceremony, Lo Nuestro Awards were presented in 33 categories. The ceremony, televised in the United States by Univision, was produced by Antonio Guzmán. Mexican performers Ninel Conde and Pedro Fernández hosted the show.
