Virgin Music Group (VMG) is a global record label founded on 13 September 2022, and owned by Universal Music Group. [1]

History

On 18 February 2021, Universal Music Group announced Virgin Music Label & Artist Services, a new global network to deliver premium and flexible artist and label services. [2] Seven months after its announcement, Universal Music Group launched Virgin Music Group, as an entertainment and music company, to head operations of Virgin Music Label & Artist Services and Ingrooves. [3] Prior to its launch, UMG appointed Mtheory founders JT Myers, and Nat Pastor, to serve as Co-Chief executive officers of Virgin Music Group. [4]

Partnership

On 21 February 2023, Virgin Music Group confirmed a partnership between its subsidiary Virgin Music Label & Artist Services, the UK division of Virgin Music and Modern Sky UK, a UK-based record label. Speaking with Complete Music Update Business Editor Chris Cooke, CEO of Modern Sky UK and North America, David Pichilingi says: “We’re delighted to sign this deal with Virgin Music UK, providing a global team who closely align with our values and ambition”, he goes on. “This deal will allow us to work more effectively globally and we are excited at the prospect of sending Modern Sky to new heights in 2023 alongside our friends and partners at Virgin Music”. UMG's corporate headquarters are located in Hilversum, Netherlands and its operational headquarters are located in Santa Monica, California. Tencent acquired ten percent of Universal Music Group in March 2020 for €3 billion and acquired an additional ten percent stake in January 2021. The label was later launched worldwide. It has a branch in India called EMI Records India, run by director Mohit Suri. In 2014, Universal Music Japan revived the label in Japan as the successor to EMI Records Japan. In June 2020, Universal revived the label as the successor to Virgin EMI, with Virgin Records now operating as an imprint of EMI Records. In February 2024, UMG Philippines relaunched EMI as a successor to the former EMI Philippines label after 22 years.

The Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJMG) was an American recording music unit, formed on December 31, 1998 by Universal Music Group. It consisted of labels created under the operations of Island Records and Def Jam Recordings. On April 1, 2014, Universal Music Group publicly announced the disbandment of the Island Def Jam Music Group, leaving IDJMG and its affiliated subsidiaries compelled as separate sister labels.

Universal Records was a record label owned by Universal Music Group and operated as part of the Universal Motown Republic Group. The label has been dormant since 2006, due to Universal Motown and Universal Republic Records being formed and taking all of the artists from it. Those labels were eventually combined to form the latest iteration of Republic Records.
