Upton is a town in south-east Dorset, England. Upton is to the east of Holton Heath and Upton Heath, and to the north of the Poole suburb of Hamworthy. It is the second largest town in the Purbeck Hills.
The town is built around a road junction where the Blandford to Hamworthy road crosses the main Poole to Dorchester road. The Poole suburbs of Hamworthy and Turlin Moor adjoin to the south, and Lytchett Minster village lies a short distance to the west. [1]
The town is bounded by several areas of open space. To the north, [1] Upton Heath is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), [2] while, eastwards, Upton Wood [3] and the former estate Upton Country Park separate the town from Holes Bay. [1] To the south, Lytchett Bay is part of Poole Harbour SSSI. [4]
Although mostly residential, Upton features a small industrial estate with businesses including Southernprint.
In 2000, The Upton Clock Tower was built at the Upton Crossroads to celebrate the new millennium and represent the town pride. A dementia care home was opened at the Crossroads in 2015 [5] on the prominent former site of The Greenridge pub [6] opposite Upton Library [7] and Upton Health Centre. [8] It features a pharmacy and a coffee shop. [9] [10]
There are more shops in Moorland Parade, at the top of Moorland Way, where the Lytchett Minster & Upton Town Council offices are located. [11]
Upton has two churches. Upton Methodist Church's Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1865, [12] while planning permission for the present St Dunstan's church and the adjoining Community Centre was granted in 1991, [13] replacing an older church on the same site. [14]
Upton forms part of the civil parish of Lytchett Minster and Upton, which in turn forms part of the Purbeck local government district of Dorset. It is within the Mid Dorset and North Poole constituency of the House of Commons.
Between 1979 and 2020, Upton was represented in the European Parliament.
From 1979 to 1984, Upton was part of the single member district of Wessex, and represented by Conservative Member of the European Parliament James Spicer.
From 1984 to 1994, Upton was part of the Dorset East and Hampshire West constituency and from 1994 to 1999, Upton was part of the Dorset and East Devon constituency represented by Conservative Bryan Cassidy.
Upton was included in the South West England constituency for elections to the European Parliament from 1999 to 2020. [15]
Upton has two state schools, Upton Infant School and Upton Junior School, which are feeder schools for Lytchett Minster School. The Yarrells Preparatory School and Ladybirds Playschool (previously L.U.C.A. Ladybirds) are also based in the town. Upton Methodists Pre-School is based at the Methodist church
Upton lies at the intersection of the A35 and the A350. The town is served by Wilts & Dorset bus routes numbers 8, 9, 10 and 40 [16] and FirstGroup's X54 service. [17] Together, these provide links to Hamworthy, Creekmoor, Poole, Wareham, Lytchett Matravers, Swanage and Weymouth.
Hamworthy is the nearest railway station, with twice-hourly trains in each direction [18] on the South West Main Line between London Waterloo and Weymouth. Poole station, while more distant, provides more frequent services. [18]

Poole Harbour is a large natural harbour in Dorset, southern England, with the town of Poole on its shores. The harbour is a drowned valley (ria) formed at the end of the last ice age and is the estuary of several rivers, the largest being the Frome. The harbour has a long history of human settlement stretching to pre-Roman times. The harbour is extremely shallow, with one main dredged channel through the harbour, from the mouth to Holes Bay.
Lytchett Minster is a village in Dorset, England. It lies around 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of Poole town centre. The village forms part of the civil parish of Lytchett Minster and Upton, Upton now being a suburb of Poole.
Purbeck was a local government district in Dorset, England. The district was named after the Isle of Purbeck, a peninsula that forms a large proportion of the district's area. However, it extended significantly further north and west than the traditional boundary of the Isle of Purbeck which is the River Frome. The district council was based in the town of Wareham, which is itself north of the Frome.
Lytchett Matravers is a large village and civil parish in Dorset, England. The 2011 census recorded the parish as having 1,439 households and a population of 3,424.

Hamworthy is a village, parish, peninsula and suburb of Poole in Dorset, England. It is sited on a peninsula of approximately 3 square kilometres (1.2 sq mi) that is bordered by the town of Upton to the north, Poole Harbour to the south, Lytchett Bay to the west and Holes Bay to the east. Poole Bridge, the southern terminus of the A350 road, connects the suburb with the town centre. Hamworthy is the location of the Port of Poole ferry passenger terminal and cargo handling operations.
The South East Dorset conurbation is a multi-centred conurbation on the south coast of Dorset in England.
Dorset County Council (DCC) was the county council for the county of Dorset in England. It provided the upper tier of local government, below which were district councils, and town and parish councils. The county council had 46 elected councillors and was based at County Hall in Dorchester. The council was abolished on 31 March 2019 as part of structural changes to local government in Dorset.
Lytchett Minster and Upton, formerly just Lytchett Minster is a civil parish in the Dorset district, in the ceremonial county of Dorset, England. The parish comprises the village of Lytchett Minster and the nearby built up area of Upton, which is contiguous with the urban area of Poole.
The Southampton and Dorchester Railway was an English railway company formed to join Southampton in Hampshire with Dorchester in Dorset, with hopes of forming part of a route from London to Exeter. It received parliamentary authority in 1845 and opened in 1847.

The Dorset Senior Cup is a knockout cup competition involving association football teams from the county of Dorset, England, affiliated with the Dorset County Football Association. The current holders of the Dorset Senior Cup are Poole Town who beat Hamworthy United 2–1 after extra time in the final on 1 March 2022 at the County Ground, Hamworthy.
The Dorset Heaths form an important area of heathland within the Poole Basin in southern England. Much of the area is protected.
St Aldhelm's Church is a private church in Lytchett Heath, Dorset, England. It was designed by George Crickmay for Lord Eustace Cecil and built in 1898. It has been a Grade II* listed building since 1984. The lychgate of the churchyard is also Grade II listed.
