The Men's long jump event at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on September 1 and 2.
The long jump is a track and field event in which athletes combine speed, strength and agility in an attempt to leap as far as possible from a take off point. Along with the triple jump, the two events that measure jumping for distance as a group are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". This event has a history in the Ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympic event for men since the first Olympics in 1896 and for women since 1948.
The 13th IAAF World Championships in Athletics was an international athletics competition that was held in Daegu, South Korea. It started on 27 August 2011 and finished on 4 September 2011.
Daegu Stadium, also known as the Blue Arc, is a sports stadium located in Daegu, South Korea. It was formerly named Daegu World Cup Stadium but was changed to Daegu Stadium on 5 March 2008. It has a seating capacity for 66,422 people, and parking for 3,550 cars. It is located approximately 11 kilometers or 20 minutes by car from Daegu Airport. It is managed by the Daegu Sports Facilities Management Center.
Defending champion Dwight Phillips had not done well early in the season, only finishing tenth in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. But as defending champion, he was given the automatic entry into the meet. On his qualifying jump he showed the first sign of life, jumping a season best 8.32 to lead qualifying. Of the rest of the field, only Mitchell Watt achieved an automatic qualifier. Will Claye achieved a rare feat by qualifying for final in both the Long Jump and Triple Jump.
Dwight Phillips is an American former athlete and a four-time world champion in the long jump. He was the 2004 Olympic champion in the event. His personal best of 8.74 meters, set in 2009, makes him the joint fifth best jumper of all time.
The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships is an annual track and field competition organized by USA Track & Field, which serves as the American national championships for the sport. Since 1992, in years which feature a Summer Olympics, World Championships in Athletics or a IAAF Continental Cup, the championships serve as a way of selecting the best athletes for those competitions.
Mitchell Watt is an Australian track & field athlete. His main event is the long jump and holds the current Oceania record for the long jump – 8.54m. He was the first ever Australian long jump medalist at a World Championship and was the silver medalist at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
In the final, Phillips almost matched his qualifying jump with an 8.31 to take the early lead. Ngonidzashe Makusha came close with an 8.29 in the same round. Mitchell Watt bested the early leaders with an 8.33 in the second round, but not before Phillips had jumped an 8.45 to separate from the field. Nobody was able to improve after that.
Ngonidzashe Makusha is a Zimbabwean sprinter and long jumper. He is the national record holder over 100 m and Long Jump for Zimbabwe with 9.89 s (+1.3 m/s) and 8.40 m (0.0 m/s) respectively. Both performances achieved during the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships in Des Moines, Iowa where he completed the 100 m long jump double. Following the 2 gold medals victory, Makusha became one of the only four, now five, athletes to win the double at the NCAA championships. The four others are DeHart Hubbard (1925), Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis (1981), and Jarrion Lawson (2016).
After the event, Phillips celebrated by showing his assigned bib number 1111, significant for his first-place finish in four World Championships.
