The Women's high jump event at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics was held at the Daegu Stadium on September 1 and 3.

High jump track and field event

The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern most practised format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. In the modern era, athletes run towards the bar and use the Fosbury Flop method of jumping, leaping head first with their back to the bar. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form.

Russia's Anna Chicherova entered the competition as the favourite with a world leading jump of 2.07 m. Although Blanka Vlašić had won world titles in 2007 and 2009 and was ranked second in the world, she was suffering from a leg injury and decided to compete after having initially withdrawn. Antonietta Di Martino had been the only other woman over 2.00 m that year. Emma Green, Venelina Veneva-Mateeva, 2004 Olympic champion Yelena Slesarenko and Ruth Beitia were the other established entrants, while Svetlana Shkolina was fourth in the world rankings. Chaunté Lowe, Ariane Friedrich and reigning Olympic champion Tia Hellebaut were notable absences. [1] [2] It took 1.95 to make the final.

Anna Chicherova Russian high jumper

Anna Vladimirovna Chicherova is a Russian high jumper. She was the gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2011 World Championships in Athletics and originally won a bronze medal in the event at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Blanka Vlašić Croatian high jumper

Blanka Vlašić is a Croatian athlete who specialises in the high jump. She is the Croatian record holder in the event, and the former indoor World Champion. The daughter of Croatian decathlon record holder Joško Vlašić, she was a talented junior athlete and attended her first Olympic Games in 2000 Sydney at the age of sixteen. She won the World Junior Championships in Athletics in both 2000 and 2002. Vlašić broke her national record in 2004 and also won her first world senior medal at the World Indoor Championships that year. A hyperthyroid condition hindered her second Olympic appearance in Athens and she spent the 2005 season recuperating from surgery.

The women's high jump event at the 2007 World Championships in Athletics took place on August 31, 2007 (qualification) and 2 September 2007 (final) at the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, Japan.

The medalists clearly separated from the field in order, each clearing 2.00 Chicherova on her first, Vlašić on her second and Di Martino on her third. At 2.03 Chicherova remained clean while Vlašić again needed two attempts, with Di Martino unable to make the height. At 2.05, neither was able to make it, though Vlašić looked closer. After years of finishing one place behind Vlašić in major meets, it was the first time Chicherova was able to reverse those results.
