The defending champion, Elaine Thompson-Herah, won the event, setting a new Olympic record. This was her third gold Olympic medal. The 2016 bronze medalist and the 2008 and 2012 champion in this event, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, finished second. Shericka Jackson won the bronze medal, completing the podium sweep for Jamaica.
