The men's 200 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships was held at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha from 29 September to 1 October 2019. [1] The winning margin was 0.12 seconds.

Summary

Out of the blocks in the final, Adam Gemili took a slight lead through the turn with Andre De Grasse then Noah Lyles giving up as much as a meter. Coming off the turn, Lyles accelerated past Gemili. Once Lyles hit his top end speed, there was no catching him. Behind him, Álex Quiñónez was gaining on De Grasse and both were edging closer to Gemili. 20 metres out, both went by. Lyles won by 2 metres, De Grasse held off Quiñónez for silver.

Lyles' victory capped an evening of 3 men's gold medals for USA also including Sam Kendricks in the pole vault and Donavan Brazier in the 800 metres.

Adam Ahmed Gemili is a British sprinter. He is the 2014 European champion at 200 metres, three-time European champion in the 4 x 100 metres relay, and part of the Great Britain team that won gold at the 2017 World Championships in the same event. He has finished fourth in the 200 m at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and fourth and fifth in separate editions of the World Championships in the same event.

The event was won by Usain Bolt of Jamaica, his third consecutive gold medal in the event. Noah Lyles is an American professional track and field sprinter competing in the 100 meters and 200 meters. He is the 2020 Tokyo Olympic 200 m bronze medalist and a six-time World champion, having won the 200 m and 4 × 100 m at the 2019 World Championships, the 200 m at the 2022 World Championships, and the 100 m, 200 m, and 4 × 100 m events at the 2023 World Championships, becoming the first man since Usain Bolt in 2015 to complete the sprint treble at a World Championships. At the 2022 Championships, Lyles also earned a silver medal in the 4 × 100 m relay. He holds personal bests of 9.83 seconds for the 100 m and 19.31 seconds for the 200 m, the latter being an American record making him the third fastest on the respective world all-time list.

Canada earned its first gold medal in the event since 1928 and third overall, as Andre De Grasse added gold to his 2016 silver to become the 12th man to earn multiple medals in the 200 metres. Kenneth Bednarek and Noah Lyles, both of the United States, took silver and bronze as Americans reached the podium for the first time since 2008. Jamaica's three-Games gold medal streak in the event ended, with Usain Bolt having retired.
