In the early morning of June 24, 2022, an Ilyushin Il-76MD cargo aircraft of the Russian Air Force [1] was operating a flight from Orenburg Tsentralny Airport to Belgorod International Airport with an intermediate flight to Dyagilevo air base crashed immediately after takeoff from Dyagilevo air base, [1] near the Mikhailovsky highway area in the city of Ryazan. [2]
According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the plane was operating a training flight from Orenburg to Belgorod and landing in Ryazan for refueling. [1]
There were 9 crew members on board.

The aircraft performed a training flight from Orenburg to Belgorod with an intermediate landing (for refueling) in Ryazan. There was no cargo on board of the aircraft. [4]
Immediately after takeoff from the air base in Ryazan, a fire broke out in its No.4 engine. [5] The crew decided to make an emergency landing. Before landing, the plane circled over the meadows. [6]
At 3:18 PM, the plane made a hard landing on the ground, damaging power lines. The plane crashed and caught fire. There is no significant damage on the ground after the crash. [7]
Three people died immediately after the crash. The remaining 6 were hospitalized. Two more people later died in the hospital. [8]
The Ilyushin Il-18 is a large turboprop airliner that first flew in 1957 and became one of the best known Soviet aircraft of its era. The Il-18 was one of the world's principal airliners for several decades and was widely exported. Due to the aircraft's durability, many examples achieved over 45,000 flight hours and the type remains operational in both military and civilian capacities. The Il-18's successor was the longer-range Ilyushin Il-62.
The Ilyushin Il-76 is a multi-purpose, fixed-wing, four-engine turbofan strategic airlifter designed by the Soviet Union's Ilyushin design bureau as a commercial freighter in 1967, to replace the Antonov An-12. It was developed to deliver heavy machinery to remote and poorly served areas. Military versions of the Il-76 have been widely used in Europe, Asia and Africa, including use as an aerial refueling tanker and command center.

The 2009 Iranian Air Force Il-76MD Adnan 2 accident occurred on 22 September 2009, when an Ilyushin Il-76MD Adnan 2 crashed during a flyby near the city of Tehran. Sources conflict on the cause of the loss, with some stating that there was a mid-air collision with an Iranian Air Force Northrop F-5E Tiger II or a HESA Saeqeh, and others stating that the rotodome detached from the aircraft, striking and removing the tailplane while the aircraft was manoeuvring for an emergency landing following an engine fire. The crash resulted in the deaths of all seven people on board the plane and the destruction of Iran's only functional airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft.
On 14 June 2014, an Ilyushin Il-76 transport aircraft of the 25th Transport Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force was shot down by forces of the Russia-backed separatists from Luhansk People's Republic while on approach to land at Luhansk International Airport, Ukraine, during the initial phase of the war in Donbas. The aircraft was carrying troops and equipment from an undisclosed location. All 49 people on board were killed.
On 27 April 1974, an Aeroflot Il-18 airliner crashed while operating a charter flight from Leningrad to Zaporizhzhia, continuing to Krasnodar, Russia. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Pulkovo Airport in Leningrad. None of the 109 people on board survived. The engine fire was caused by the uncontained failure of a faulty compressor disk.
Pulkovo Aviation Enterprise Flight 9560 was a repositioning flight from Sheremetyevo International Airport in Moscow to Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg. On 28 July 2002, the Ilyushin Il-86 aircraft operating the flight crashed after take-off from Sheremetyevo. 14 of the 16 crew members on board were killed, making the crash the deadliest aviation accident involving the Ilyushin Il-86.
Siberian Light Aviation Flight 42 was a domestic Russian scheduled passenger flight from Kedrovy to Tomsk, both in Tomsk Oblast in Siberia. On 16 July 2021, the Antonov An-28 operating the flight suffered icing in the engines leading to a dual engine failure 10 minutes into the flight and crash landed in a remote area in the Vasyugan Swamp in the Bakcharsky District. The pilot suffered a broken leg requiring surgery, but all of the remaining passengers and crew escaped with only minor injuries. An investigation ultimately concluded that the pilots of the aircraft had not activated the anti-icing system, which led to an accumulation of ice, resulting in engine failure. Initially praised as a hero for his handling of the incident, the captain of the flight was ultimately criminally charged for violating safety protocols, leading to the crash.

At about 17:30 local time on 23 October 2022, a Su-30 crashed in the city of Irkutsk in eastern Russia. The Su-30SM aircraft was performing a test flight when it fell on a wooden two-story residential building in 2nd Sovetsky Lane. Both the pilots were killed. The residents of the house were not hurt as they were not home.
Rus Flight 9633 was a cargo flight operated on an IL-76TD aircraft of Rus Airlines from Chkalovsky Airport (Moscow) to Taiyuan Wusu Airport (Taiyuan) with intermediate landings at Alykel Airport (Norilsk) and Bratsk Airport (Bratsk). On July 14, 2001, the plane carrying out this flight crashed a few seconds after takeoff from Chkalovsky Airport. All 10 people on board were killed.
On 24 January 2024, at around 11:15 MSK, a Russian Air Force Ilyushin Il-76 military transport plane crashed near the Ukrainian border in Russia's Korochansky district in Belgorod Oblast, killing everyone on board. Russia stated that the plane was shot down by Ukraine while it was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) captured during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as well as six crew members and three guards, and that the prisoners of war were to be exchanged in a swap. The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces did not directly take responsibility for shooting down the airplane, but stated that it was a legitimate military target and that it was carrying S-300 anti-aircraft missiles for bombing Kharkiv Oblast.
On 12 March 2024, an Ilyushin Il-76 cargo plane crashed in Russia's Ivanovo Oblast. Fifteen people were on board when the aircraft crashed; eight crew and seven passengers. No survivors were found. Russian sources said one of its engines caught fire and the plane crashed soon after takeoff. Russia's defense ministry cited an engine fire as the most probable cause of the crash.
On 27 November 1996, a Russian Air Force Ilyushin Il-76 crashed near Abakan Airport, Russia, killing all 23 people onboard. The plane was on a cargo flight from Moscow Ramenskoye Airport to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport, with a scheduled stopover at Abakan International Airport.
