The 2022 United Arab Emirates Tri-Nation Series was the 10th round of the 2019–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 cricket tournament that took place in the United Arab Emirates in March 2022. [1] Originally scheduled to take place in February 2023, it was moved back to March 2022 due to fixtures impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic being rearranged. [2] [3]

It was a tri-nation series between Nepal, Papua New Guinea and the United Arab Emirates cricket teams, with the matches played as One Day International (ODI) fixtures. [4] The ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 formed part of the qualification pathway to the 2023 Cricket World Cup. [5] [6]

In the week before the series, the UAE competed in another tri-nation series, winning two of their four games. [7] In preparation for the series, Nepal played four warm-up matches in Sri Lanka, winning twice against Sri Lanka Navy Club and once against Sri Lanka Police, before losing to a Sri Lanka Combined XI. [8]

On 19 March 2022, Papua New Guinea registered their first win in their 15th match of the Cricket World Cup League 2, when they beat the United Arab Emirates by six wickets. [9]

On 28 February 2022, Nepal named a preliminary squad of 20 players for the tournament. [13] On 3 March 2022, the squad was cut to 16 players as the team travelled to Sri Lanka for a series of warm-up matches before travelling on to the UAE. [14] Mohammad Boota, Karthik Meiyappan and Rahul Bhatia were all named as reserves in the UAE squad. [12]

The 2015–2017 ICC World Cricket League Championship was the second edition of the ICC World Cricket League Championship. It took place from 2015 until 2017, in parallel with the 2015-17 ICC Intercontinental Cup. Both Ireland and Afghanistan had been promoted to the main ICC ODI Championship and did not compete in this tournament. Instead, Kenya and Nepal were included in the tournament. The tournament was played in a round-robin format. All matches were recorded as List A matches, and those in which both teams had ODI status were also recorded as ODIs.

The 2018 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier was a cricket tournament that took place during March 2018 in Zimbabwe. It formed the final part of the Cricket World Cup qualification process for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales. The top two teams, Afghanistan national cricket team and the West Indies, qualified for the World Cup, joining the hosts and the seven teams who had already qualified through their ranking in the ICC ODI Championship. Afghanistan won the tournament, beating the West Indies by 7 wickets in the final. Afghanistan’s Mohommad Shahzad was named the player of the match and Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza was named the player of the tournament.

The Papua New Guinea national cricket team toured the United Arab Emirates in March and April 2017 to play three One Day Internationals (ODIs), three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) and a first-class match. Two of the three ODI matches were part of the 2015–17 ICC World Cricket League Championship and the first-class match was part of the 2015–17 ICC Intercontinental Cup tournament. Before the international fixtures, Papua New Guinea played warm-up matches against the English sides Middlesex County Cricket Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

The 2018 Asia Cup Qualifier was a cricket tournament that was held in Malaysia from 29 August to 6 September 2018. The event served as the qualifier for the 2018 Asia Cup. The top two teams from the group stage met in the final, with the winner progressing to the 2018 Asia Cup. The fixture between the United Arab Emirates and Nepal on 30 August 2018 was a One Day International (ODI) match. It was the first time both sides had played each other in an ODI match, with the UAE going on to win the fixture by 78 runs.

The 2019 ICC World Cricket League Division Two was an international cricket tournament that took place in April 2019 in Namibia. It was contested by six teams; Canada, Hong Kong, Oman, Papua New Guinea, the United States and tournament hosts Namibia. It formed part of the 2017–19 cycle of the World Cricket League (WCL) which determined the qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup. The final and third-place playoff match were granted One Day International (ODI) status by the International Cricket Council. The World Cup League 2 tournament forms part of the qualification process for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

The 2021–22 Nepal T20I Tri-Nation Series was a Twenty20 International (T20I) cricket tournament that took place in Nepal from 28 March to 4 April 2022. The participating teams were the hosts Nepal along with Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. The matches were played at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. On 12 March 2022, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) confirmed all the fixtures.

The United Arab Emirates national cricket team toured Nepal in November 2022 to play three One Day International (ODI) matches. All the three matches were played in Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground. The series provided Nepal with preparation for a tri-series in Namibia in December 2022, part of Cricket World Cup League 2.

The 2023 Nepal Tri-Nation Series was the 21st, and last, round of the 2019–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 cricket tournament took place in Nepal in March 2023. It was a tri-nation series between Nepal, Papua New Guinea and the United Arab Emirates cricket teams, with the matches played as One Day International (ODI) fixtures. The ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 formed part of the qualification pathway to the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Going into the final series of the League 2 tournament, Nepal required four wins from four games to claim the third and final automatic place in the 2023 Cricket World Cup Qualifier, at the expense of Namibia.

The 2023 Nepal Tri-Nation Series was a Twenty20 International cricket tournament, took place in October 2023 in Nepal. The participating teams were Nepal, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates. The tournament formed part of all the three teams' preparations for the Asia World Cup Qualifier.
