Aeroflot Flight 10 was a scheduled passenger flight from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk Airport to Vnukovo Airport with stopovers at Krasnoyarsk Airport and Severny Airport. On 27 September 1954, the Ilyushin Il-12 operating the route crashed near Severny Airport after it struck trees. [1]
The aircraft, an Ilyushin Il-12P registered as СССР-Л1365, went into operation in 1947. It had a factory number of 30086 and a serial number of 086. It was manufactured by Factory Number 30.
The crew consisted of: [2]
The Il-12 departed Krasnoyarsk at 22:17. The visibility was forecast as 4–10 km (2.5–6.2 mi; 2.2–5.4 nmi) at the time of takeoff. [1] Despite a warning being received by the station at 00:12 that the airport was covered in fog and had poor visibility, the forecaster on duty reported the weather conditions to the crew at 00:25. As the aircraft approached Novosibirsk, the visibility worsened to about 400 m (1,300 ft). The captain abandoned the approach due to the plane being too far to the left of the runway. [3]
After a few minutes, the crew started another approach with a visibility of 100 m (330 ft). Without sighting the ground, the pilot-in-command continued the approach, with permission from the air traffic controller, and descended below the decision height. At 00:57, the Il-12 struck trees and crashed into a wooded area near the airport, killing all 29 occupants onboard. [1] There was no fire. [3]
Flight 10 was approaching from the south, where there were no approach lights, and the non-directional beacon worked improperly.
The investigation determined that the visibility was minimal. Furthermore, the crew did not have the runway and ground in sight. It was necessary to divert to an alternative airport, which in this case would have been Kemerovo or Barabinsk. As a consequence, the crew controlled flight into terrain. [3]
The investigation listed these factors as the causes of the accident:
Aeroflot Flight 331 was an international passenger flight operated by an Ilyushin Il-62M that crashed about 1 km (0.62 mi) from José Martí International Airport, in Havana, Cuba, on 27 May 1977. The accident occurred after the aircraft hit power lines on its final approach to the airport during poor weather. The aircraft was attempting an emergency landing due to a fire in one of its engines. Only two of the 69 occupants on board survived. The cause of the crash was ruled to be pilot error.

Western Airlines Flight 2605, nicknamed the "Night Owl", was an international scheduled passenger flight from Los Angeles, California, to Mexico City, Mexico. On October 31, 1979, at 5:42 a.m. CST (UTC−06:00), the McDonnell Douglas DC-10 used on the flight crashed at Mexico City International Airport in fog after landing on a runway that was closed for maintenance. Of the 88 occupants on board, 72 were killed, in addition to a maintenance worker who died when the plane struck his vehicle.
Iberia Flight 401 was a routine flight from Madrid International Airport in Spain to Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife. The aircraft had first entered service with Iberia new in 1954 and was named "Santa Maria". There was heavy fog at around 21:17 local time. As the plane came in on final approach, fog started to settle in and blocked view of the runway, and the approach controller informed the crew that visibility was below minimal. The pilot made a very low run and initiated a go-around and made another approach to land. He got a view of the beginning of the runway, but not the rest of the runway and decided to go around at about 1,000 feet (300 m). As he applied full power, the aircraft struck a scraper, a tractor and a minivan about 50 metres (160 ft) from the runway centerline. The plane was damaged and could not gain altitude, causing it to crash in the Los Rodeos gorge besides the runway.
