On 27 April 1974, an Aeroflot Il-18 airliner crashed while operating a charter flight from Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) to Zaporizhzhia, continuing to Krasnodar, Russia. The plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Pulkovo Airport in Leningrad. None of the 109 people on board survived. [2] The engine fire was caused by the uncontained failure of a faulty compressor disk.

Aircraft

The aircraft had been in service since 1964, and had sustained 7,501 cycles (takeoffs and landings) at the time of the crash. [3]

Passengers and crew

The flight was led by Captain Nikolai Danilov, with 4 other pilots and two flight attendants. There were 102 passengers on board. [3]

Accident

The aircraft's number four engine caught fire two minutes after takeoff due to a faulty compressor disk. The crew elected to return to the airport. Upon extending the flaps for landing, an asymmetrical flap condition occurred, causing the aircraft to dive sharply about two and a half kilometers from the runway. [2] [4]

Strong vibrations in the number four engine had been reported on the flight before the crash. [5]

All 90 passengers and crew on board died as a result of the crash.

Aviaarktika was a Soviet airline which started operations on 1 September 1930 and was absorbed by Aeroflot on 3 January 1960.

Aeroflot Flight U-505 crashed just after takeoff in Tashkent on 13 April 1987. Flight 505 was an early morning flight from Tashkent to Shahrisabz, both in the Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic, now the Republic of Uzbekistan. The flight took off just one minute and 28 seconds after an Ilyushin Il-76, thus encountering its wake vortex. The Yakovlev Yak-40 then banked sharply to the right, struck the ground, and caught fire. All 9 people on board died.

On 13 October 1972, the Ilyushin Il-62 airliner operating the flight crashed on approach to Sheremetyevo, with the loss of all 164 passengers and crew of 10. At the time, it was the world's deadliest civil aviation disaster, until it was surpassed by the Kano air disaster in 1973. As of 2023, this remains the second-deadliest accident involving an Il-62, after LOT Flight 5055, and the second-deadliest on Russian soil, after Aeroflot Flight 3352.

In the early morning of June 24, 2022, an Ilyushin Il-76MD cargo aircraft of the Russian Air Force was operating a flight from Orenburg Tsentralny Airport to Belgorod International Airport with an intermediate flight to Dyagilevo air base crashed immediately after takeoff from Dyagilevo air base, near the Mikhailovsky highway area in the city of Ryazan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Rus Flight 9633</span>

Rus Flight 9633 was a cargo flight operated on an IL-76TD aircraft of «Rus» airlines from Chkalovsky Airport (Moscow) to Taiyuan Wusu Airport (Taiyuan) with intermediate landings at Alykel Airport (Norilsk) and Bratsk Airport (Bratsk). On July 14, 2001, the plane carrying out this flight crashed a few seconds after takeoff from Chkalovsky Airport. All 10 people on board were killed.
