Athletics at the 1982 Commonwealth Games – Men's marathon

The men's marathon event was held on 8 October 1982. It started and finished at South Bank, next to the Brisbane River in Stanley Street.Brisbane, Australia.

Two of the Tanzanians, Juma Ikangaa and reigning champion Gidamis Shahanga, opened up a large lead (58 seconds at the 30 km mark), [1] but Rob de Castella closed the gap in the final kilometres to win.

The men's marathon at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, South Korea was held on Sunday October 2, 1988. The race started at 14:30h local time. A total of 98 athletes completed the race, with Polin Belisle from Belize finishing in last position in 3'14:02. There were 118 competitors from 60 countries. Twenty of them did not finish. The maximum number of athletes per nation had been set at 3 since the 1930 Olympic Congress. The event was won by Gelindo Bordin of Italy, the nation's first victory in the Olympic men's marathon and first medal in the event since 1924. Kenya and Djibouti each won their first Olympic men's marathon medal.

ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships is an International Canoe Federation competition in canoe marathon in which athletes compete over long distances. The race usually starts and ends at the same place, and includes portages. Race categories vary by the number of athletes in the boat, the length of the course, and whether the boat is a canoe or kayak. In a kayak, the paddler is seated in the direction of travel, and uses a double-bladed paddle. In a canoe the paddler kneels on one knee with the other leg forward and foot flat on the floor inside the boat, and paddles a single-bladed paddle on one side only. The elite men's race was won by Australia's Robert de Castella in a time of 2:07:51 hours and the women's race was won by Norway's Ingrid Kristiansen in 2:24:55. A men's visually impaired race was hosted within the marathon for the first time, and was won by an American Ricardo Pacheco in a time of 3:35:15.
