Atwima District is a former district that was located in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988. However on 12 November 2003 (effective 18 February 2004), it was split off into two new districts by a decree of president John Agyekum Kufuor: Atwima Nwabiagya District (which it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 6 February 2018; capital: Nkawie) and Atwima Mponua District (capital: Asesewa). The district assembly was located in the western part of Ashanti Region and had Nkawie as its capital town.
Nkawie is a large agrarian and service town and the capital of Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality, a district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Nkawie is located on the western stretch of the Kumasi Bibiani road and bounded by two other major towns. - Toase and Abuakwa. It is home to prosperous business men in Ghana. There is a government hospital, a fire service station, a secondary technical institution and other government institutions like the courts, education offices, health insurance office, post office and the new immigration offices. The Forestry Commission is the second highest revenue earner in the forestry services in Ghana. The Owabi dam also supplies water to the south of the municipality. The famous Barekese dam also located in the Municipality supplies water to about 75% of Kumasi. Politically, the Town is an electoral bank for the New Patriotic Party. Nkawie is the home town of former Ghanaian president John Kufuor.

However, on 15 March 2018, it was split off into two new districts: Ahafo Ano South West District and Ahafo Ano South East District. The municipality is located in the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Bekwai as its capital town.

Originally created as an ordinary district assembly on 10 March 1989 when it was known as Ejisu-Juaben District which was created from the former Ejisu-Juaben-Bosomtwe District Council. It was later elevated to municipal district assembly status in 2007 to become Ejisu-Juaben Municipal District. However on 15 March 2018, it was split off into two new municipal districts: Ejisu Municipal District and Juaben Municipal District. The municipality was located in the central part of Ashanti Region and had Ejisu as its capital town.

Later, the eastern part of the district was split off to create the 1st Sekyere Afram Plains District on 1 November 2007, with Kumawu as its capital town. However, on 28 June 2012, the Afram Plains area of the district was split off to create the new Sekyere Afram Plains District, with Dobrosno as its capital town; while the remaining part has since then been officially renamed as Sekyere Kumawu District, with Kumawu as its capital town. Originally it was part of the then-larger Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma District which was carved out on 10 March 1989 from the Ejisu-Juaben-Bosomtwe District. In 2007, Atwima-Kwanwoma District was created with Foase as its capital which was later moved to Twedie as a result of a supreme Court ruling.
