Fomena is a small town and the capital of the Adansi North District. [1] The town is the seat of the paramount chief of the Adansi traditional council. [2] The town is known as the place where the Fomena treaty was signed. [3]

History

In 1820, Joseph Dupuis recorded Fomena as a village of humble size. Throughout the 19th century, it underwent major growth under the Ashanti Empire. By 1875, Fomena served as the capital of one of the constituent territories of the Ashanti metropolitan area. [4]

Education

The town have only one high school, T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School. [5] [6] The school is a second cycle institution. [7] The town also has a nursing training institution, the Community Health Nurses Training College.

Economy

Much of the residents in the town engage in agriculture. Some of the crops cultivated include maize, rice and cocoa beans. [2]

Health

The town and the district as a whole have been dealing with a lack of proper health facilities even since being settled. [8] To combat this, the government of Ghana began work on a new hospital with the help of 175 million dollars in 2014. [9] After years of inactivity, the Adansi North District Hospital was finally completed in 2023. [10]

Treaty of Fomena

The Treaty of Komena was an agreement between the Ashanti Empire and the British sometime in February of 1874. [11] The treaty was signed in the town of Fomena. The treaty's goal was to bring peace between the two powers after weeks of fighting. It resulted in the Ashanti Empire paying 50,000 ounces of gold and giving up much of its power, playing a role in the state's collapse. [3]

He is also the Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. A Freemason, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has served as the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Ghana, the Sword Bearer of the United Grand Lodge of England and the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Liberia.

Adansi is a subgroup of the Akan ethnicity inhabiting the Ashanti Region of Ghana. An Adansihene is still designated. The Adansi has seven paramountcies: the capital, Fomena, New Edubiase, Ayaase, Akrokyere (Akrokerri), Akrofuom, Bodwesango and, Dompoase.

Adansi North District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally it was created from parts of two former districts on 17 February 2004: Adansi West District and Adansi East District; thus the remaining parts had been absorbed into parts of Obuasi Municipal District and Adansi South District respectively. On 15 March 2018, the southeast part of the district was split off to create Adansi Asokwa District. The district is located in the southern part of Ashanti Region and has Fomena as its capital town.

Agogo is a town in the Asante Akim North Municipal District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Agogo is approximately 80 kilometers (50 mi) east of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, and had a population of 28,271 in the 2000 census. Computer projections estimate that the 2007 population was 32,859.

Mampong is a town and the capital of the Mampong Municipal in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. As of 2012, the town has a population of 42,037 people. The town is home to the Mamponghene, Nana Osei Bonsu II.

Dompoase, a suburb of Kumasi, and located in the Adansi North District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The place is known for Dompoase Senior High School. It is a town of 30,000 people in Ghana. Kumasi is the capital of the region, considered the wealthiest and most powerful in the nation. It is the area of most cocoa production, as well as gold mining.

The Community Health Nurses Training College is public tertiary health institution in Fomena in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The college is in the Adansi North District. The activities of the institution is supervised by the Ministry of Education. The Nurses and Midwifery Council (NMC) regulates the activities, curriculum and examination of the student nurses and midwives. The council's mandate Is enshrined under section 4(1) of N.R.C.D 117.

Bodwesango is a village in the Adansi North district, a district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

Asante Akim Central Municipal District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 as the 1st Asante Akim North District, which it was created from the former Asante Akim District Council. Later it was elevated to municipal district assembly status to become Asante Akim North Municipal District in November 2007. However, in July 2012, the northern part of the district was split off to create a new Asante Akim North District; thus the remaining part has been renamed to become Asante Akim Central Municipal District. The municipality is located in the eastern part of Ashanti Region and has Konongo as its capital town.

Akwasi Afrifa is a Ghanaian former politician of the Republic of Ghana. He was the Member of Parliament representing Fomena constituency of the Ashanti Region of Ghana in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana. He is a member of the New Patriotic Party.

Treaty of Fomena was a peace treaty between the Ashanti Empire and the British and was formed to end the Third Anglo-Ashanti War. It was formed sometime in February of 1874. Others also claimed it was formed sometime around March, although the treaty stated that it was signed on February 13.

Adansi Asokwa is the capital of the Adansi Asokwa District in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The district itself was created out of the Adansi North District by Legislative Instrument in 2018. It is located in the southern half of the region on the N8 highway running from Kumasi, capital of the region to Yamoransa near Cape Coast, capital of the Central Region. It is also the main town in the Asokwa Area Council, one of four in the district.
