Wenchi is a town and the capital of Wenchi Municipal of the Bono Region in the middle-belt of Ghana. Wenchi is located at 7.73333 [latitude in decimal degrees], -2.1 [longitude in decimal degrees] at an average elevation/altitude of 304 meters. [2] Wenchi is approximately 30 km north of Techiman and about 50 km east of the Ivory Coast border. Wenchi has a population of 39,187 people in 2013. [1]

Transport

Wenchi is connected by road to Techiman and Sunyani and its airport, Sunyani Airport. [4] Wenchi is not serviced by a railway station on the Ghana Railway Corporation, but it has been proposed that a line be extended to Wenchi. It has less vehicular traffic as few people own cars and motors.

Culture

Wenchi celebrates the annual Apoo, a yam festival in April/May. The climax of the Apoo is the durbar of the king (Omanhene) through Wenchi. In August, the annual yam festival takes place in Wenchi and it marks the end of the first rainy season and harvesting of the yam in the towns of Wenchi and Techiman. [4] In 2019, the Omanhemaa (Queen) of Wenchi was Nana Ntoa Sramangyadua III. The Paramount Chief of Wenchi is Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III who has rule the town since 2019 [5]

Sports

The inhabitants of Wenchi are sports fanatics; many residents follow several Wenchi-based sports teams. Current second division team is Wenchiman. The team Unity Sporting Club, a sports academy, is located in Wenchi. Young Apostle football club is a team that promoted to the Ghana Premier in 2024,is located at Wenchi. Wenchi is the home town of Professional footballers including Asamoah Gyan, Baffoe Gyan and Felix Afena-Gyan.

Notable people

Wenchi is the hometown and birthplace of former Ghanaian prime minister Kofi Abrefa Busia, who was born a prince of and is buried there. There is a street named after him, Busia Street. His sister Ama Bame Busia, a former member of council of state, is his only living sibling. Professor George Baffour Gyan is the current MP and minister of planning at the presidency.

Ethnic groups such as the Akan, Northerner, Ewe, and Ga-Adangbe resided in the city along with others. As of 2024, the current mayor of the municipality is Hon. Ansu Kumi.

The Apoo Festival is a festival celebrated annually in western Ghana, lasting a week in March and April. The festival is meant to ritually purify the people of social evils, as well as uniting people and families, and includes a variety of other traditional cultural activities. The word 'apoo' comes from the root word 'po', meaning 'to reject.'

Wenchi Sporting Club formerly known as Unity Sporting Club is Ghanaian football club based in Wenchi, Brong-Ahafo. They are competing in the Brong Ahafo Division Two Zone 9. In July 2013 the club executives vote to change the name to Wenchi Sporting Club, a move which was aim at getting the people to Wenchi to have a sense of belonging to the club.

Wenchi Municipal District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Wenchi District, until the western part of the district was split off to create Tain District on 12 November 2003 ; thus the remaining part has been retained as Wenchi District. It was later elevated to municipal district assembly status and has been renamed as Wenchi Municipal District on 29 February 2008. The municipality is located in the northeast part of Bono Region and has Wenchi as its capital town.

Koase is a town in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana. The town is known for the Koase Secondary Technical School (KOSTECH). The school is located on the Techiman to Wenchi road. The population of the school from the current survey 3 July 2016 is four hundred and seventy four (474). The school was established on 28 January 1991. It was a community based school formed by the formal Head of State Jerry John Rawlins. Before then it was a middle school which was established by the Prime Minister Kofi Abrefa Busia. The school is a second cycle institution.

Fiapre is a town in Sunyani West Municipal in the Bono Region of Ghana. Fiapre is very close to the regional capital town of the Bono Region, Sunyani.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Banda Ahenkro</span> Town and District Capital in Bono Region, Ghana

Banda Ahenkro is a town located in the west-northern of Bono region, Ghana, near the border of Ivory Coast. Its geography provided a home for numerous groups seeking shelter from across West Africa during the slave trade era. The original name of the settlement was Serminakuu meaning groups of 'grasses'. This name was changed to Banda, which is a corruption of 'Woanda' meaning 'they did not sleep'. Ancestors of Banda Ahenkro were allies of the Asante kingdom during wars and they provided a military force that virtually refused to sleep during at-war times. This is because they were predominantly Muslims and were found praying throughout the night. Later, 'woanda' was also corrupted by the Bono neighbours to become Banda. The settlement evolved to become the chief town or 'Ahenkro' within a collection of Nafana communities.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bono Region</span> Region of Ghana

The Bono region is one of the 16 administrative regions of Ghana. It is as a result of the remainder of Brong-Ahafo region when Bono East region and Ahafo region were created. Sunyani, also known as the green city of Ghana, is the regional capital. Sunyani can pride itself as the cleanest capital city and a major conference destination.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bono East Region</span> Region of Ghana

The Bono East region of Ghana is a new region carved out of the Brong Ahafo region. The capital of the new region is Techiman. This creation of this new region was in fulfillment of a promise made by the New Patriotic Party prior to the 2016 Ghana general election. Upon winning the elections, the President, Nana Akuffo Addo created the Ministry of Regional Reorganization to oversee policy formulation and implementation. In all six new regions are to be created from the existing ten regions of Ghana. The other regions are Bono, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East, and Oti regions.

Justina Awo Owusu–Banahene, also called Awo Baatanpa, is a Ghanaian politician, educationist, and the regional minister for the Bono Region.
