Goaso is a city and the capital of the newly created Ahafo Region of Ghana. Goaso doubles as the capital of Asunafo North Municipal District. It is located between three major towns; Mim, Kukuom and Hwidiem. Other surrounding towns include Ayumso, Akrodie, Fawohoyeden and Nkaseim. Goaso has population of 25,473 according to 2021 population census. This makes it the 2nd largest town after Mim in the Asunafo North Municipal District. Goaso is home to the offices of certain government agencies and institutions. [1]

History

Goaso sits on the bank of River 'Goa.' So the Twi word 'Goa-so' means 'bank of river Goa.' According to oral histories, the first chief of Goaso was a palm wine tapper. And occasionally, he sent palm wine to the Asantehene who is the absolute monarch of the Asante people.

Economy

Agriculture

Goaso has a very rich vegetation cover. It is one of the food baskets of Ghana. The forest cover of the area is very thick and supports farming activities. The predominant occupation of the residents is farming, which is both Cocoa farming and cultivation of food crops. Food production in Goaso is very high as compared to other parts of the country which led the NPP government to launch one of its flagship programs "the Planting for Food and Jobs" in this town. [2]

Trading

Goaso is noted for commercial and business activities. Retailing and other trading activities pick up on Wednesdays which is the weekly market day. Trading is particularly high in Goaso during the main-cocoa seasons. On every Wednesday, people from near and far come to Goaso to transact businesses. Farmers from other Districts also send their food crops to the Goaso Wednesday market to meet buyers who come from as far as Accra and Tema. [3] There are no manufacturing companies in Goaso. However, the light industrial area of this town is populated with several artisanal works. Artisans which predominate are the auto mechanics.

Tourism & Festival

The shrine at Goaso krodadaamu is considered a potential tourist site. The main festival cerebrated by the chiefs and people of Goaso is the Abetiase Festival. 'Abetiase' is a Twi word meaning 'Palm tree never dies'. This festival is cerebrated to mark the important role which the first Chief of Goaso played in sending palm wine to the Asantehene during special occasions. Abetiase festival is a bi-annual event and many people from far and near join in the cerebration which is held in the month of August. [4]

Education

There are several educational institutions in Goaso. Notable amongst them are the Goaso Nursing and Midwifery Training College and Ahafoman Senior High and Technical School. There are however, other private vocational institutes in Goaso. [5] [6]

Agogo is a town in the Asante Akim North Municipal District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Agogo is approximately 80 kilometers east of Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, and had a population of 28,271 in the 2000 census. Computer projections estimate that the 2007 population was 32,859.

Asunafo North Municipal District is one of the six districts in Ahafo Region, Ghana. It was formerly part of the then-larger Asunafo District from 1988 until the southern part of the district was split off by a decree of president John Agyekum Kufuor on 12 November 2003 to become Asunafo South District. The remaining northern part was renamed as Asunafo North District which was later elevated to municipal status on 29 February 2008 to become Asunafo North Municipal District. The municipality is located in the western part of Ahafo Region and has Goaso as its capital town.

Wamahinso is a town in the Asutifi North District in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. The town is known for the Gyamfi Kumanin Senior High Technical School. The school is a second cycle institution.

Sefwi Wiawso is a town in the Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal District in the Western North Region of Ghana. It doubles as the capital of Sefwi-Wiawso Municipal District and Western North Region. Wiawso serves as the traditional seat for the Omanhene of Sefwi-Wiawso traditional area. The settlement of wiawso began on hilltop with Sefwi-Dwenase settlement occupying the lowlands. Overtime, Wiawso and Sefwi-Dwenase have conurbated with almost all the financial institutions, governmental agency-offices, lorry terminals and the main market all located in Sefwi Dwenase. Wiawso is known for producing timber, cocoa and cashew.

The Ahafo Region is a newly created region in Ghana with Goaso as its capital. The region has administrative and governmental legislature like all the ten already existing regions in Ghana. The region was carved out of the south-eastern part of the Brong Ahafo Region and was in fulfillment of a campaign promise made by New Patriotic Party. Prior to the 2016 Ghanaian general election, the then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo declared that when elected, he would explore the possibility of creating new regions out of some of the existing regions in Ghana in order to bring government closer to citizens.

Mim is a city in the Asunafo North Municipal District in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. It is a nodal town between Sunyani and Goaso on the N12 Highway. The distance from Mim to Sunyani is 64 km whilst that of Mim to Goaso is 14 km. Mim has direct routes to: Kumasi; Kenyasi;Dormaa Ahenkro; Nkrankwanta and Sefwi Debiso. Mim is known for producing timber, cocoa and cashew. According to 2021 population census, Mim township has a population of 31,538. Ntotroso is a town in the Asutifi North District in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. The distance from Ntotroso to Kenyasi, the District capital is 13 km while that of Sunyani, the Bono regional capital is 41 km. Notable tertiary institution in this town, is the Ntotroso Nursing college.

Sefwi Debiso is a town in the Bia West District in the Western North Region of Ghana. It is a central town located between three major towns: Essam, Sefwi Adabokrom and Adwuofua. Because of rapid expansion, Debiso has conurbated with the nearby Community Essam. Presently, Sefwi Debiso & Essam serve as co-capitals of the Bia West District. There are direct distant routes from Debiso to major towns such as Kumasi, Berekum, Mim Ahafo, Sefwi-Wiawso and republic of Ivory Coast. Debiso is known for producing cocoa and timber. Adabokrom is a town in Western North Region of Ghana. It is the capital of Bia East. Adabokrom was named the District capital after Bia East District split from Bia District in 2012. Adabokrom is about 250 km west of Kumasi. The town is noted for cocoa production.

Twedie is a town in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. It's located 16 km west of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital. Twedie is the district capital of the Atwima Kwanwoma District.

Ghana Greentech Academy is a secondary educational institution in Ghana and operates as a co-educational, non-denominational, Day School.
