Nkroful is a village and the capital of the Ellembelle District in the Western Region of Ghana, located near Axim in the Nzema East Municipal. The village is the birthplace of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first president. [1] [2]
The village of Nkroful was once under the Western Nzema Kingdom, which dates back to 1470. It is now under the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area. Kwesie Kutuah was the first known chief of the village in 1911. [3] [4]
As of 2023, the family head of Nkroful is Abusuapanyinli Senza Erzah and the Chief of Nkroful is Nana Kwasi Kutuah V. [5]
Nkroful stands inland 5 km (3 miles) from the coastal highway, from the Essiama town junction turnoff. [1]
The village lies in the semi-equatorial climatic zone of West Africa. It experiences all-year round rainfall with the high amounts occurring between May and June. [2]
The village only have one senior high school, Nkroful Agricultural Senior High School, which was established in 1972. [6]
Initially being buried in Guinea, Nkrumah was buried in Nkroful on 9 July 1972 at the original Nkrumah Mausoleum and monument. [8] His remains were later lay to rest at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra in 1992. [9] [1]

Francis Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian politician, political theorist, and revolutionary. He served as Prime Minister of the Gold Coast from 1952 until 1957, when it gained independence from Britain. He was then the first Prime Minister and then the President of Ghana, from 1957 until 1966. An influential advocate of Pan-Africanism, Nkrumah was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and winner of the Lenin Peace Prize from the Soviet Union in 1962.

Ellembelle District is one of the fourteen districts in Western Region, Ghana. Originally it was part of the then-larger Nzema East District in 1988, which was created from the former Nzema District Council, until the western part of the district was split off by a decree of then-president John Agyekum Kufuor on 29 February 2008 to create Ellembelle District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Nzema East District. The district assembly is located in the southwest part of Western Region and has Nkroful as its capital town.

Half Assini, also known as Awiane, is a small town and is the capital of Jomoro Municipal District, a municipality in the Western Region of Ghana. It is the hometown of Kwame Nkrumah's father. Nkrumah, the first president of Ghana, had attended elementary school at Half Assini. The town is closer to the western border of Ghana, has white sand beaches and is known for its numerous tourist sites. One of Half Assini's chiefs, Anthony Kwaw, was best friends with Ghana's first president in school.

Nsein Senior High School is a senior high school located at Nsein-Axim in the Western Region of Ghana. The school was originally known as the Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah Secondary School, then as Axim Secondary School, before finally being renamed to the Nsein Secondary School.

Timothy Ansah (1919-2008) was a Ghanaian educationist and politician. He was a member of parliament for the Tarkwa-Aboso constituency from 1965 to 1966. Prior to entering parliament, he taught in various educational institutions. He was the headmaster for Nsein Senior High School from 1960 to 1974.

Kwame Nkrumah, the first President of Ghana, died on April 27, 1972, in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Nkrumah died of an unknown but apparently incurable sickness. His body came back to Ghana where he had achieved independence in 1957 and had ruled the country approximately 13 years. Thousands of Ghanaians attended the funeral to bury the president.
