Banda Ahenkro is a town located in the west-northern of Bono region, Ghana, near the border of Ivory Coast. [2] Its geography provided a home for numerous groups seeking shelter from across West Africa during the slave trade era.[ citation needed ] The original name of the settlement was Serminakuu meaning groups of 'grasses'. This name was changed to Banda, which is a corruption of 'Woanda' meaning 'they did not sleep'. Ancestors of Banda Ahenkro were allies of the Asante kingdom during wars and they provided a military force that virtually refused to sleep during at-war times. This is because they were predominantly Muslims and were found praying throughout the night. Later, 'woanda' was also corrupted by the Bono neighbours to become Banda. The settlement evolved to become the chief town or 'Ahenkro' within a collection of Nafana communities.[ citation needed ]

Banda Ahenkro which is the district capital of Banda District was carved from Tain and forms part of the new districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on 28 June 2012. [3]

The late president, H.E. J.E.A Mills, by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 46 new districts. All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect in 2012[ when? ]hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216. [4]

The district has a population of 45,000 with Banda Ahenkro having a population of 2,795 as at 2010 with males being 21,000 and females being 24,000. [5] The population has been increasing over the years with a growth rate of 2.6%. [6]

Economy

Agriculture is the main occupation among the workforce of Banda Ahenkro.

Transportation

Banda Ahenkro, the capital of Banda District is 126 kilometres away from Sunyani, the regional capital (approximately 1 hour 47 minutes’ drive by road). The town is connected by road to Wenchi and Bui and its hydro electric power, Bui Dam. [7] Banda Ahenkro is not serviced by a railway station on the Ghana Railway Corporation.

Communications

The town of Banda Ahenkro is outfitted with modern communication facilities which include, mobile phones, internet and e-mail services. These services are provided by telecommunication network providers MTN Ghana, Airtel Ghana, Vodafone Ghana and Tigo Ghana. [8]

Culture

The people of Banda Ahenkro celebrate 'Forjour' which is a popular festival that's being celebrated by the town. 'Forjour' is a yam festival celebrated in the month of October every year, the climax of the yam festival is the durbar of the king (Omanhene) through Banda traditional area. The festival is used as a means to remember their ancestors for protection and favour. It is also held to purify the area and allow its people to go into the traditional New Year with hope. [9]

Sports

Many residents of Banda traditional area follows the Banda Ahenkro-based sports team, Bandaman Football Club, which is currently playing in the second division league.[ citation needed ]

Notable people

Banda Ahenkro is the home and birthplace of Ahmed Ibrahim, the current member of parliament for Banda District, [10] Mr. Alexander Kofi Essien, lead counsel Greater Accra Regional House of Chiefs, [11] and Asuma Banda and many others.

Health

Banda Ahenkro (B/A), on 31 May 2005. GNA- The Ghana Health Service [12] handed over a multi-million-cedi Health Centre to the people at Banda Ahenkro in Brong Ahafo.

Osabarima Okokyeredom Kwadwo Sito I, Omanhene of Banda Traditional Area, who received the keys to the facility from Mr Ebenezer Awuku, Estate Officer of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) in Sunyani in turn handed them over to the health personnel in-charge of the centre. The Omanhene commended the government and the GHS for the provision of the facility. [13]

Tourism

Tourists to Banda Ahenkro are attracted by the area's natural environment. [14] Attractions include the Nyua Kpoo Mountain and the Sheli Kpoo cave which are potential tourist sites. [14]

Duayaw Nkwanta is a town and the capital of Tano North Municipal District, a municipal in the Ahafo Region of Ghana. It is located close to Sunyani, the capital of Bono Region. The infrastructure of Duayaw Nkwanta is well structured. Duayaw Nkwanta has a settlement population of 27,476. This town boast of good schools such as: Boakye Tromo Senior High Technical School, Serwaa Kesse Girls Senior High School, Presbyterian Midwifery Training College among others.

Nsawkaw is a town and is the capital of Tain district of the Bono region of Ghana. The hometown of the native people of Nsoko was Hani Begho. It has a population of about 6000.

Odumase is a small town and is the capital of Sunyani West district of the Bono Region of Ghana. The number of inhabitants is 16,542.

Banda District is one of the twelve districts in Bono Region, Ghana. Originally it was formerly part of the then-larger Tain District on 17 February 2004; until the northern part of the district was split off to create Banda District on 28 June 2012; thus the remaining part has been retained as Tain District. The district assembly is located in the northeast part of Bono Region and has Banda Ahenkro as its capital town.

Japekrom is the Municipal Capital of Jaman South Municipality of the Bono Region of Ghana. It has been an important town since the colonial Gold Coast days in Ghana's History, then referred to as Pruano but spelled as Pulliano in colonial Gold Coast maps. The Japekromhene is part of Asanteman council. The township was built on a foundation of solid stone and as a result of resistance to any form of suppression or oppression. Stephen Willie Yeboah was a Ghanaian politician. He served as a regional commissioner for the Brong Ahafo Region, the Ashanti Region and the Western Region. He also served as a member of parliament for the Sunyani West constituency and later the Dormaa constituency.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Bono East Region</span> Region of Ghana

The Bono East region of Ghana is a new region carved out of the Brong Ahafo region. The capital of the new region is Techiman. This creation of this new region was in fulfillment of a promise made by the New Patriotic Party prior to the 2016 Ghana general election. Upon winning the elections, the President, Nana Akuffo Addo created the Ministry of Regional Reorganization to oversee policy formulation and implementation. In all six new regions are to be created from the existing ten regions of Ghana. The other regions are Bono, Western North, Ahafo, Savannah, North East, and Oti regions.

A grand durbar of chief, dignitaries, parliamentarians, government functionaries, ministers of state, Bonohene of Ivory coast - Nana Agyeman Adinkrah II and distinguished citizens of Dormaa were present to outdoor Osagyefo, July 25, 1999. He is the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.
