Kete Krachi (formerly Kete Kratje) is a town and the capital of the Krachi West District in the Oti Region of Ghana, adjacent to Lake Volta. Kete-Krachi is connected by a ferry to the town of Kwadjokrom, and by road to Bimbila and Dambai. [2] The town has a population of 11,788 people. [1]

History

The town (the known as Krachikrom) was historically a trading center in the region, selling primarily salt, slaves, and shea butter. Krachikrom combinated with a nearby zongo settlement to formed Kete-Krachi sometime in 1877. Under German rule, tensions between the Islamic and Krachi portions of town grew due to a imbalanced of power. [2]

Economy

The town is mostly dominated by agriculture, counted for about 70% of economic activity. Other economic sectors include commerce and tourism. [3]

Health

Kete-Krachi and the district as a whole is served by the Kete-Krachi district hospital. The facility provides curative care, preventive care and treatment options such as surgeries, laboratory and diagnostic techniques. [4]

Climate

The town has a tropical savanna climate (Köppen climate classification Aw), with a wet and dry season and is hot year-round. The daily mean temperature is 30 °C (86 °F) while the daily mean minimum is 25.5 °C (77.9 °F). The wet season occurs from April to October while the dry season starts in November and ends in March. The mean annual rainfall is 1,300 mm (51 in). [3]

The Guan or Guang people are an ethnic group found almost in all parts of Ghana, including the Akyode people who speak Gikyode, Krachi people Nkonya tribe, the Gonja, Anum, Larteh, Akposo, Etsii in the Central Region, Nawuri, Nyagbo and Ntsumburu. The Guan are believed to have been the first settlers in modern day southern Ghana, migrating from the Mossi-Dagbon region of modern Ghana and Burkina around 1000 A.D. The Gonja of the Guan are however late settlers in northern Ghana, invading eastern Dagbon in the 1600s, capturing Daboya and many towns.

Kpassa is the capital of Nkwanta North District, a district in the Oti Region of Ghana. The Oti Region was part of the Volta Region of Ghana until 2019. The indigenous inhabitants of Kpassa are mainly Konkombas. In the past, the inhabitants of Kpassa have mainly engaged in farming. This trend has changed during the past two decades. Younger inhabitants are actively pursuing education and small-scale business activities, while the older ones are into governance. As a result, Kpassa has undergone rapid expansion during these past two decades. The town is expected to expand further once the Eastern Corridor Road Project is completed. In terms of architecture, a returning visitor will easily noticed that the town is rapidly shifting from mud buildings or atakpame to modern block buildings. In fact, most people in the town attach this shift to prestige and affluence in the society. At the current rate, one is expected to find fewer atakpame buildings a decade in the future. The economy of Kpassa is critical to the Volta Region, owing to its engagement in the production of valuable agricultural products such as corn, yam, cassava, millet, groundnuts, pepper, soya beans, and beans, among others.

Nawuri is a Guang language of Ghana. It is nearly intelligible with Kyode.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Keta Municipal District</span> Municipal District in Volta Region, Ghana

Keta Municipal District is one of the eighteen districts in Volta Region, Ghana. Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Keta District, which was created from the former Anlo District Council, until it was elevated to municipal district assembly status on 1 November 2007 to become Keta Municipal District. However on 19 February 2019, the western part of the district was split off to create Anloga District; thus the remaining part has been retained as Keta Municipal District. The municipality is located in the southeast part of Volta Region and has Keta as its capital town.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Oti Region</span> Region of Ghana

The Oti Region is one of the six newly created regions of Ghana in December 2018. The region was carved out of the Volta Region and will be in fulfillment of a campaign promise made by New Patriotic Party. Prior to the 2016 Ghanaian general election, the then candidate Nana Akufo-Addo declared that when elected, he would explore the possibility of creating new regions out of some of the existing regions in Ghana in order to bring government closer to citizens. The Region was inaugurated on May 14, 2019. It has Dambai as its Regional Capital. The people of Oti region have for more than 60 years always wanted to have a region of their own before its creation in 2018 by the President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led government in December 2018.
