Offinso Municipal District is one of the forty-three districts in Ashanti Region, Ghana. [1] [2] Originally created as an ordinary district assembly in 1988 when it was known as Offinso District , which it was created from the former Offinso District Council; until the northern part of the district was later split off to create Offinso North District on 29 February 2008; while the remaining part was elevated to municipal district assembly status on the same year to become Offinso Municipal District. The municipality is located in the northern part of Ashanti Region and has Offinso as its capital town.

History

In the early 18th century, the people of Offinso were regarded as one of the Ashanti Empire’s strongest armies and played a role in the conquering of Denkyira, Akyem and Bono territory. Led by Nana Wiafe Akenten I, the second paramount chief of Offinso, they assisted in the Ashanti Empire’s great expansion over Ghana. [3]

As a reward for Offinso people’s contributions in war, Nana Osei Tutu I granted Nana Wiafe Akenten I, a vast amount of land in the kingdom. The land granted is what makes up the present day Offinso Municipality. [3]

There are 52 kindergartens, 94 primary schools, and 52 junior secondary schools.

There are 44 kindergartens, 42 primary schools, and 15 junior secondary schools.

Culture

The indigenous people of the Offinso district are Ashanti’s, hence the large cultural presence in the area. [3]

The Municipality has a major festival known as Mmoaninko, which is celebrated every four years. It is an occasion which brings Offinso citizens, home and abroad, together to discuss the development of the Municipality. [5] The festival also remembers the great efforts of Nana Wiafe Akenten I and the Offinso people in the wars for the Ashanti Empire in the early 18th century. [6]

Demographics

About 85% of the population are Asante, while the remaining 15% comprises other ethnic groups, the majority of whom hail from the Northern, Upper West, and Upper East Regions. [5]

Christianity is the main religion practiced in the district, although there is a significant Muslim population in the town of Offinso.

Governance

The Municipality has one paramount chief, the Offinsohene, and several sub-chiefs. [5]

Abofour is a town in the Offinso Municipality in Ashanti Region of Ghana. It is the second largest town in the Municipality after the Offinso township. It is in fact one of the most populated townships in the Ashanti REGION of Ghana. Though Offinso is the Municipal capital, Abofour undoubtedly is the economic hub of the municipality by the virtue of having one of the largest markets in the country.

Juaben is a small town in the Ejisu-Juaben Municipal District, a district in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The Mmoaninko festival is celebrated by the chiefs and peoples of Offinso in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. The festival is celebrated every 4 years.

Introduction

Nana Kwame Akuoko Sarpong, is a traditional ruler, a politician and a lawyer. He is the paramount chief or Omanhene of the Agogo Traditional Area of Ghana. He served as Secretary for Health, Secretary for Internal Affairs and Secretary for Chieftaincy Affairs in the PNDC government. He also served as a member of the council of state in the fourth Republic.

Osei Kwame Despite is a Ghanaian entrepreneur and a philanthropist with a foundation in music creation and knowledge of the broadcasting sector. Osei-Kwame is the CEO of the Despite Firm Ltd, a trade company with subsidiaries in the media industry, including UTV, PEACE FM, OKAY FM, NEAT FM and HELLO FM in Kumasi. He was named Africa Entrepreneur of the Year at the African Achievers Awards in the United Kingdom in 2021. He was also honored with GH CAPTAIN's Award in 2019 for his contributions to the socio-economic development of the country.

Nana Kwabena Wiafe also known as Nana Kwabena Wiafe Ababio or, in private life, Kwabena Sanwo Ansah, was a traditional ruler and Omanhene of Offinso Traditional Area. He is known to be the first Offinso royal to be enstooled twice in Offinso history. He reigned from 1935 to 1945 and from 1959 to 1966.

Nana Wiafe Akenten II was a traditional ruler and Omanhene of the Offinso Traditional Area. He is known to be the second Offinso royal who was enstooled twice.

Peter Kwasi Sarpong is the former Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kumasi. He was born in Offinso, Ashanti.
