Azaraegbelu is a village in southeastern Nigeria located near the city of Owerri. [1] The name has its origin in Emekuku. Azaraegbelu was the first son of Emekuku and is regarded as the most powerful. [2]
Azaraegbelu, being the first son of Ezelukwu, is made up of warriors who have been the backbone of the Emekuku people.[ citation needed ] The village is one of the birthplaces of Catholicism in Eastern Nigeria as the Catholic Church in Azaraegbelu was built at the same time with one centrally located at Emekuku. [2] The church was built by Irish missionaries.[ citation needed ] In the recent past, the people of Avuvu in Ikeduru, Enyiogugu in Aboh-Mbaise and some parts of Emii, all came to worship in church at Azaraegbelu.
The then Teachers Training College (TTC) now a catholic secondary school was located in Azaraegbelu.[ citation needed ] The Radio Nigeria Owerri, which is now called Heartland FM is located in Azaraegbelu.[ citation needed ] There is also a public Primary School. At the Catholic Church, there is a primary school there run by the Marist Brothers. Azaraegbelu is made up of four kindred, namely; Umuokoro (okoro mama ukwu), Onum (Onuma egbula Ezelukwu), Umuezehu (Ezuhu Oma Onum) and Ama-Achara.
The main market in Azaraegbelu is called Orie-Nwinyi. It is also among the most prominent markets in Emekuku. One of the most memorable days in Azaraegbelu is usually the Orienwainyi Market day during the Christmas period. Masquerades from many communities usually converge in Azaraegbelu for a show.
Owerri is the capital city of Imo State in Nigeria, set in the heart of Igboland. It is also the state's largest city, followed by Orlu, Okigwe and Ohaji/Egbema. Owerri consists of three Local Government Areas including Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West, it has an estimated population of 1,401,873 as of 2016 and is approximately 100 square kilometres (40 sq mi) in area. Aba is a city in southeastern Nigeria and the commercial centre of Abia State. Upon the creation of Abia State in 1991, the old Aba township was divided into two local government areas, being Aba South and Aba North, while the suburban neighborhood of what was then known as Obioma Ngwa L.G.A. was divided into three L.G.A.s for administrative convenience. Aba South is the main city centre of Aba and Abia State at large, being located on the Aba River. Aba is made up of many villages such as Aba-Ukwu, Eziukwu-Aba, Obuda-Aba, Umuokpoji-Aba and other villages that have been merged for administrative convenience. Aba was established by the Ngwa clan of the Igbo people in Nigeria as a market town. Later, a military post was placed there by the British colonial administration in 1901. The city became a collection point for agricultural products following construction of a British-made railway running through it to Port Harcourt. Aba is a major urban settlement and commercial centre in its region, which is surrounded by small villages and towns. The indigenous people of Aba are the Ngwa. Aba is well known for its craftsmen and is the most populous city in southeastern Nigeria. As of 2016, Aba had an estimated population of 2,534,265, making it the biggest city in South Eastern Nigeria.
Awaka is a relatively small town, situated on a small hill about four miles north-east of Owerri, capital city of Imo State, southeastern Nigeria. It is one of the towns that make host the Alaenyi clan, others include the surrounding Ihitta-Ogada, Egbu, Naze and Owere-Nchi-Ise.

Agbaso is the former Imo State Senator for Owerri, a special assistant on Ecology to the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and is married to Robin Agbaso, an American. Okpofe is an autonomous community located in Ezinihitte Mbaise local government area (LGA), in Imo State, Nigeria with common boundaries with Itu, Ezeagbogu, Ihitte, Amumara and Oboama autonomous communities. Okpofe is the centre of the Ezinihitte Mbaise clan, and it is the only town in Ezinihitte Mbaise that does not share a boundary with another local government area in Imo State. It is quite a unique town in Ezinihitte. It is also on record that the Roman Catholic Church was first established in Okpofe town in the year 1918 when the first crop of missionaries brought to the town held the first Catholic mass at the shrine of Inyama Oguegbe Ajero, who himself was the Second Paramount King of the ancient town after Chief Mbagwu. Ezinihitte Mbaise The Anglican Juniorate in Mbaise is located in Okpofe too.
Ihiagwa is a town in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. It is located 12 km (7.5 mi) south of the capital city of Owerri. The township is composed of eight villages: Umuelem, Umuchima, Mboke, Nnkaramochie, Iriamogu, Aku/Umuokwo, Ibuzo and Umuezeawula. Ihiagwa has been divided into two autonomous communities, namely Ihiagwa Ancient Kingdom (Chimelem), comprising two villages: Umuelem and Umuchima;and Dindi-Ihiagwa, comprising the remaining six villages, all divisions done for administrative and developmental reasons. Each autonomous community is a monarchy ruled by an Eze.
