The Bangladesh Insurance Academy (BIA), established in 1973, is the only public training institute imparting insurance training and education for the insurance professionals of the country. The management of the academy is vested in a board formed by the government. The academy also provides tailor-made insurance training for the insurance operators in Bangladesh. Additionally it organizes customized training sessions, seminars, symposiums and conferences on issues relating to the insurance sector of Bangladesh. [1]

History

In the year 1973 the academy came into being through a government resolution. [2] It currently functions as an autonomous body under the administrative control of the Ministry of Finance. The members of the Board are drawn from concerned ministries, regulatory authorities, state insurance corporations, private insurance companies, Bangladesh insurance association, and University of Dhaka. [3]

Main area of activities

Every year the Bangladesh Insurance Academy conducts different courses on insurance affairs leading to Diploma. It offers professional diploma in life and non-life Insurance. [4] The academy is also working as overseas examination centers of some foreign insurance institutes including Actuarial Society of India (ASI), and Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), London. The prime roles centers round creating professional insurers in Bangladesh. [5] Quite recently the academy has started offering BIA Diploma online counseling classes, which are usually held in the evening so that the existing employees of the insurance sector can take part using computer and/or mobile devices. The academy also offers a tailored-made training program for the insurance companies of the country. Throughout the year, Bangladesh Insurance Academy conducts training program across the country, particularly in the divisional cities of Bangladesh.

The Bangladesh Armed Forces are the combined military forces of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. It consists of the three uniformed military services: the Bangladesh Army, the Bangladesh Navy and the Bangladesh Air Force. Chartered accountants were the first accountants to form a professional accounting body, initially established in Scotland in 1854. The Edinburgh Society of Accountants (1854), the Glasgow Institute of Accountants and Actuaries (1854) and the Aberdeen Society of Accountants (1867) were each granted a royal charter almost from their inception. The title is an internationally recognised professional designation; the certified public accountant designation is generally equivalent to it. The Bangladesh Army is the land warfare branch and the largest component of the Bangladesh Armed Forces. The primary mission of the Army is to provide necessary forces and capabilities to deliver the Bangladeshi government's security and defence strategies and defending the nation's territorial integrity against external attack. The Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) is a professional body dedicated to building public trust in the insurance and financial planning profession. The CII's purpose, as set out in its 1912 royal charter, is to 'Secure and justify the confidence of the public' in its members and the insurance sector as a whole. It aims to do this by setting standards of integrity, technical competence, and business capability. CII is a part of the Chartered Body Alliance which includes Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) and Chartered Banker Institute.

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI), established in 1958, is a large organization for businesspeople in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Sadharan Bima Corporation is the one and only state-owned non-life insurer and reinsurer in Bangladesh under the Ministry of Finance, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. Both Sadharan Bima Corporation, the non-life insurer, and Jiban Bima Corporation, the life insurer, were created under the Insurance Corporation Act of 1973 of Bangladesh.

Institute of Chartered Secretaries of Bangladesh (ICSB), established in 2010 under the Chartered Secretaries Act 2010, is a public institute for training of company secretaries of Bangladesh. The institute is a statutory body, which falls under the Ministry of Commerce of Government of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics (BIGC) is the oldest and only institute of its kind in Bangladesh. The establishment of the institute dates back to 11 March 1951 named as East Bengal Ceramics Institute. In 1960 the institute was renamed East Pakistan Institute of Glass and Ceramics (EPIGC). In 1971 Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation from Pakistan, the institute was again renamed as “Bangladesh Institute of Glass and Ceramics” in 1972. With the growing demands of Glass and Ceramics sector of mid-level technical manpower home and abroad three years Diploma in Ceramic Engineering was introduced in the year 1978 and Diploma in Glass Engineering was introduced in the year 2000. Duration of the Glass and Ceramic Engineering Course has changed to four years from the year 2000.
